Chapter 5: Mana Deficiency

On the way home, Godric stopped by the Central Hospital, where his mother was staying.

He went straight to the C-Ward and looked through the glass window as she lay motionlessly in bed, the silence of the room broken only by the medical device’s beeping.

She had been bedridden for the last year, but in truth she was ill long before that.

After his father drew his family into debt, she was the one to pick up that burden. She threw herself into every possible dungeon gate, taking risks she shouldn’t have just so she could drag their family out of that debt.

Unfortunately, during one of those dungeon raids, her beast had died.

In most cases, the death of a beast results in the summoner’s death, but she was one of the ’lucky’ few who survived and instead was left with a disease called Mana Deficiency.

With a broken core, her mana-dependent body couldn’t keep up and slowly began to break itself apart.

The changes were slow at first, but with time, they have been constantly getting worse, to the point where she couldn’t leave the bed without breaking a bone.

There was an experimental treatment, one that cost nearly 300 thousand credits, which was far from anything their family could afford.

Godric’s expression hardened as he watched his mother through the window.

"Just wait a little longer, mother."

His hand tightened.

"I’ll find a way."

Shortly after his quick visit to the Central Elyune Hospital, Godric left the inner part of the city and walked out into the rainy outskirts, hit by the usual heavy rains.

Luckily, the walk to his house was quick.

Among those who lived on the outskirts, his family would be considered one of the lucky ones, living near the edge where the outskirts met the inner city.

The wooden door creaked as he twisted the doorknob open and went inside.

He was met with the familiar scent of old wood and lavender, which his sister left lying around trying to ’improve’ the smell of the home.

’Seems like Mina’s already asleep.’

It made sense.

His sister spent most time studying so that she could get a scholarship into the Elyune University. She was old enough to understand their family situation, as much as Godric would like to believe she didn’t.

Walking through the narrow corridor, he noticed a piece of paper folded onto the small kitchen table.

’There is food in the fridge if you’re hungry.’

He smiled, then put the paper back down onto the table. As hungry as he might’ve been, there was something else he wanted to do first.

Godric quickly moved toward his bedroom and closed the door softly behind him.

Once inside, he focused on the vibrating sensation in his abdomen.

His surroundings disappeared, and he found himself back in the confines of his core space.

This time, he didn’t have to move to find the object floating in the air.

It was already in front of him, visible as though its darkness was different from everything else around him.

He studied it for a second, noting the intricate patterns carved across the black steel before grabbing it.

Godric closed his eyes for a moment, focusing on the weapon in his palm.

When he opened his eyes again, he saw a half-translucent window float before him.

Summon: Blackpearl

Abilities: 0/2

Godric carefully read through the list.

Grade was the first abnormality he noticed.

Common. Uncommon. Rare. Elite. Epic. Legendary.

Those were the only six grades recognised by humanity.

And yet, the word displayed before him was something entirely different.

Primordial.

The word held no meaning, but despite that, for some reason, seeing it made his heartbeat quicken.

Tier was probably the only normal thing about his ’summon’.

Every beast started from Tier 1 and grew all the way up to Tier 9, and it seemed as though the sword could somehow do the same.

Next, he moved on to the description.

It mentioned something about Celestial Guards, which neither he nor, probably, anyone else on Earth had ever heard of, but he didn’t pay it much attention.

As he read through the description, all his focus was taken away by the weapon’s ability.

Normally, a beast had one ability it could use. The most common abilities were based on the four elements: Fire, Water, Wind and Earth. But some were a little more unusual, like gravity manipulation, which currently belongs to the beast of the strongest known summoner.

The ability of his summon, however, was different.

It allowed him to copy any ability, which on the surface level seemed extremely strong, but there was a catch.

He could only copy the ability his weapon deflected.

There were circumstances in which he could imagine it getting done. With attacks like fireball, if it were small enough, he could see the blade of the weapon deflect it away. But what about abilities which weren’t truly corporeal? Just like the gravity manipulation?

Godric dismissed the description window and looked back at the weapon resting in his hand for a moment.

There were too many questions.

What was a Primordial Grade? Who were the Celestial Guards? And why was his summon something completely different from every beast recorded in history?

Of course, there were no answers.

But for the first time in years, Godric had something he could use to make a change.

Tomorrow, he would return to the academy, and with it, House Blackstar would begin its return.
