Chapter 16: Lovesick Fool
Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Lovesick Fool
Yeah, what exactly did he like about her?
Jian Yu’s gaze darkened. The Dizziness from her blood loss was making her grow tired of the farce playing out before her.
That’s right. She felt it was all a play.
They had set the stage, and she could only play along.
If they had investigated her, they should know she wasn’t someone who gave in easily. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have ended up nine hundred thousand Star Coins in debt for resisting certain people.
In their eyes, she was a special experimental subject. If they weren’t careful and she couldn’t take it anymore—if she ran away or tried to kill herself again—they would be the ones to regret it.
That’s why Ling Yanzhi was softening her up, Sheng Yue was playing the mediator, and Pei Yin was the bad cop pushing their agenda forward.
Jian Yu was used to assuming the worst of these high-and-mighty people in power.
She wasn’t the female lead, and she had no plot armor. To her, hearing Pei Yin’s questioning felt no different from him cursing her out indirectly.
After all, to them, playing with her was no different from playing with a dog.
"You ask what I like about her, but what is it that you despise so much?" Ling Yanzhi finally responded.
But what he was angry about, strangely, wasn’t that the other guy was practically calling him a dog.
His focus was a little strange.
Ling Yanzhi reached out and took the goji and red date drink from Jian Yu’s hand. He uttered a single word, "Cold."
If she kept drinking it, she’d get a stomachache.
Jian Yu pressed her lips together and leaned obediently into his embrace. ’I can’t show my hand. Those are just my worst-case-scenarios,’ she thought.
From the moment the campus network was flooded with ugly photos of her that morning, all sorts of ideas had flashed through her mind.
Honestly, Ling Yanzhi’s appearance had been very timely.
His motives were unclear, and he’d come on strong with the biting and kissing, but after weighing the pros and cons, he was her best option.
He was good to her on the surface, and he was very accommodating. Most importantly, he was powerful enough that he wouldn’t let her be bullied so easily.
He was handsome and charming, and if she could sleep with him once, she’d be more than happy to.
The air grew cold. After a long stalemate, Pei Yin said with a bitter laugh, "Aside from that strange, soothing scent she gives off, what about her is worthy of a second glance from us?"
People in power spoke slowly, their words deliberate and unhurried. Jian Yu had no patience to listen, but with her waist held fast, it was difficult to even move.
Unable to move, Jian Yu simply lifted her head, her expression blank.
The rims of her eyes were still a little red, the corners tilted slightly upward, and her eyes seemed to be veiled in a layer of mist.
Her clear, dark eyes stared at Pei Yin, choking the words right out of his mouth.
Gazing at that face—the very picture of a top-tier "innocent beauty"—he paused for a moment. "Take away the glasses, and she’s... she’s still just average. Anyway, she does nothing for me."
Sheng Yue abruptly chimed in, "You don’t think she’s pretty?"
Hmm? Jian Yu tilted her head, staring at his reddening ears.
Pei Yin glared at him in frustration. "If you’re going to stay quiet, then stop chiming in."
"He’s blind," Ling Yanzhi said, ruffling Jian Yu’s hair and helping her lean against his shoulder.
"Her competition score was nine points higher than yours."
Pei Yin genuinely hadn’t known that, but it didn’t stop him from retorting, "So I was nine points lower, so what? I wasn’t even a real participant. I couldn’t be bothered to try, I was just messing around."
Was it really about the nine points? Ling Yanzhi thought, ’This guy has no idea how compatible we are.’
Sheng Yue rarely argued with people, and neither did Ling Yanzhi.
Pei Yin was about to drop it and go to sleep, but unexpectedly, Ling Yanzhi got worked up and wouldn’t let it go.
"She’s worked countless part-time jobs and learned a ton of skills. You can tell she’s smart just by looking at her."
’Who among those chosen for Weis Lan Noble Academy isn’t smart?’
Pei Yin rolled his eyes dramatically. "That’s because she’s poor."
Ling Yanzhi flaunted his wealth. "I’m rich. I happen to like the poor ones."
He was like a competitive parent, listing off the things he had found in his investigation.
"She dropped out of high school, but the school begged her to come back. They not only arranged for her to attend her final year as a day student, but they also registered her for the interstellar competition and secured her admission to Weis Lan Academy."
After getting her high school diploma and before starting university, she even went and got an advanced nurse certification, though she only worked at the hospital for a few months.
"That’s it?" The information Pei Yin had looked up was more superficial, and he’d read it in a hurry. He couldn’t understand what was so praiseworthy about any of that.
He couldn’t understand it, and he didn’t want to.
"Forget it."
He thought about the files he’d found, which included numerous medical records and photos of Jian Yu working various jobs while going to school.
Ling Yanzhi grew impatient. "I can’t get through to a contrarian like you."
Pei Yin sneered, "Lovesick fool."
Ling Yanzhi’s eyelid twitched. "Nine points lower."
"..."
Jian Yu was getting sleepy listening to them. ’So childish,’ she thought.
She couldn’t help but let out a slightly heavier breath for a moment.
Pei Yin turned his head, clapping slowly in her direction, his words aimed at her. "Truly... impressive tactics."
Something is always more desirable when people are fighting over it.
It was making him want to get in on the action too.
Ling Yanzhi gently touched Jian Yu’s heavy eyelids.
He spoke, shooing them away. "Is there anything else you two need?"
"Hmph!" Pei Yin spun around and started to leave. ’Bros before hoes, my ass,’ he thought.
Sheng Yue didn’t follow.
Pei Yin turned back. "You’re not leaving? Are you waiting to ride his snake out of here?"
"..." Sheng Yue stood up.
After standing there for a moment, he said hesitantly, "If you really like her, you should ask her if she’s willing to live with you."
He knew Jian Yu had been brought here by force—for all he knew, Yan Zhi might even be keeping her prisoner.
Ling Yanzhi frowned. "What’s it to you?"
"I’m willing," Jian Yu said, suddenly wide awake.
’He’s so handsome, how can he be so dense?’
’If I don’t hide out here in the F6 villa, am I supposed to just wait around to be bullied by your crazy fans?’
Ling Yanzhi let out a satisfied hum. "Acting spoiled again."
Jian Yu was speechless. "..."
Pei Yin, who had been enjoying the show, pivoted on his heel.
An idea began to form in his mind.
He walked back to Sheng Yue’s side, his eyes shifting. "I also think it would be better for her to go back to her dorm. The closer she is to us, the more those people will target her."
He’d be happy to see either of his two "brothers" get frustrated; he was delighted to watch them fight over someone.
Ling Yanzhi’s expression turned grim. "Am I dead to you?"
Sheng Yue fell silent again.
Pei Yin grew anxious on his behalf. "We mean well. We’re in different majors, so we’ll only have electives together. The school doesn’t allow physical conflict, but there are plenty of ways to break a person. Don’t you like her? You don’t want her to be ostracized, do you?"
Jian Yu started to speak.
"I wasn’t asking you. Shut your mouth," Pei Yin cut her off, speaking rapidly.
His voice was light and airy. "The school’s various factions are tangled and complex. Even I have to be careful not to provoke certain people."
Ling Yanzhi nonchalantly played his trump card. "I have immunity to kill."
The highest authority granted to him by the Interstellar Alliance.
Pei Yin choked.
"You may have immunity to kill, but delusional people are very bold. It’s standard practice for them to push a few fearless pawns forward to act as scapegoats."
He was about to say more, but Sheng Yue suddenly grabbed the back of his collar and pulled him backward.
"I told you to leave, and you wouldn’t. Now I’m trying to help you, and you’re dragging me away."
Sheng Yue hauled Pei Yin away, leaving Jian Yu to let out a bewildered yawn.
"It’s ten o’clock. You should be asleep," Ling Yanzhi said, lifting her up with one arm, blanket and all.
He covered Jian Yu’s eyes with his other hand in a way that brooked no refusal. "Sleeping early is good for you."
A drop of blood fell to the floor, and a faint, coppery scent rose from it.
Ling Yanzhi stopped in his tracks. His pupils contracted as he grabbed her wrist.
On her slender arm, a trail of blood stretched from the needle mark all the way to the tip of her index finger.
