Chapter 17: Chapter 17: I’m Not Saying, For Fear You’ll Get Arrogant

Pei Yin’s simmering rage hadn’t faded when a fierce gust of wind kicked up behind him.

"What’s he up to now?"

The hem of his fresh clothes flapped violently. The many chains adorning his body rattled and clanged.

He turned and followed Sheng Yue’s gaze.

"Well now, why is a bird-man flying out of Villa No. 6?"

Pei Yin raised a provocative eyebrow. "I’m gonna go check it out."

A pair of black wings flared from his back, and he shot straight toward Ling Yanzhi.

Yin Jiu, who had been sulking all morning, impatiently broke the silence. ’Hurry and follow them! Something must have happened.’

’Is my speed no match for Ting Ying’s or something?’

Sheng Yue was annoyed and ignored Yin Jiu.

He observed their flight path for a moment, then, after a brief thought, headed for the school infirmary.

A figure in a white uniform darted from the villa district, streaked past the auditorium, and left only a faint afterimage.

Yin Jiu started nagging again. ’This is all because you were too slow. If you’d made your move, Ling Yanzhi wouldn’t have snatched her away.’

Sheng Yue was silent for a moment. ’She’s a person, not a toy.’

’Besides, I don’t even like Jian Yu.’

...

The school infirmary was stratified by Level, allocating medical resources based on a student’s EV value.

Ling Yanzhi’s Level was high, so heading to the top floor was the right move.

Pei Yin and Sheng Yue had the same idea. They caught up at almost the same time, arriving mere seconds apart.

They arrived just in time to see Ling Yanzhi follow Jian Yu into an emergency room.

"How is she so much trouble? I just left, and she’s already back in the infirmary." A cold, contemptuous glint appeared in Pei Yin’s eyes.

And yet, his feet seemed glued to the floor, not moving an inch.

Remembering the popular thread on the forums, Pei Yin continued to push his luck. "Once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and now again at night. She might as well just move into the hospital."

He didn’t get a response, not that he cared. "If he can’t take proper care of her, he should just send her to me. I’m half a doctor, after all."

Sheng Yue glanced down. "If you’ve got the guts, say that to him when he comes out."

Pei Yin: "..."

’Fine. So I don’t have the guts.’

Soon, the door opened.

"The pressure was applied correctly after the blood draw, but her coagulation is dysfunctional. She has insufficient clotting factor synthesis and a low platelet count. Even a small wound, like from a fine needle, will cause profuse bleeding."

The school doctor’s words echoed clearly in their ears.

Pei Yin’s expression froze. His mouth moved, but the taunt he had prepared died in his throat.

’Was it because of the blood draw? The bleeding didn’t stop?’

Sheng Yue was also stunned for a moment. He walked up to them. "Is everything all right?"

His gaze flickered to Jian Yu’s pale face, but the question was for Ling Yanzhi.

Ling Yanzhi, however, said nothing.

The school doctor looked at these powerful figures and swallowed nervously. "We’ve administered clotting factors and platelets. The bleeding has stopped."

He actually wanted to add that while this kind of situation looks dangerous, it doesn’t necessitate a trip to the emergency room.

But one look at Ling Yanzhi’s blood-red eyes, which seemed to be forged in lava, made him wisely shut his mouth.

"Next time this happens, don’t delay. Losing too much blood carries a risk of shock."

Mustering his professional ethics, he offered the apprehensive warning and then quickly scurried away.

"Noted." Ling Yanzhi committed it to memory, his expression serene.

Unlike his usual unapproachable aura, the air around him now carried a searing chill.

Jian Yu looked like she wanted to say something but held back, glancing up at him, then at Sheng Yue, and finally casting an uneasy look toward Pei Yin.

She was faking it.

But she had a real knack for playing the victim.

The corners of her eyes were tinged with pink, and her light, glass-like pupils seemed veiled in a thin mist.

When her long, soft, dense lashes drooped, they veiled her eyes and cast a soft shadow beneath them.

Pei Yin’s brow furrowed. "Stop being so dramatic. It’s just a little blood."

As if he’d never bled before. He’d just fought Ling Yanzhi, and he’d probably lost just as much blood, if not more.

Though his words were callous, his mocking eyes held a trace of complex guilt.

He felt an inexplicable agitation. "When did your Healing Ability become so damn useless? You were licking her like a dog, and you still couldn’t stop the bleeding?"

Sheng Yue also looked over, puzzled.

"It was no use. It doesn’t work on her." Ling Yanzhi had only agreed to the blood draw because he respected Jian Yu’s choice.

He just hadn’t expected his Healing Ability to fail.

It had happened right under his nose, so he couldn’t very well turn around and blame Pei Yin.

After all, his silence had been a tacit agreement. Anything he said now would be hypocritical.

"You’d better figure out something useful." Ling Yanzhi’s gaze swept coolly past Sheng Yue before landing on Pei Yin like a barrage of icy daggers.

He bent down and lifted Jian Yu, who had been silent the entire time, into his arms.

For once, Pei Yin didn’t snap back.

He watched Jian Yu nestle obediently in Ling Yanzhi’s arms. Her skin was a near-translucent porcelain white, and she exuded an air of breakable fragility.

Her long, seaweed-like chestnut hair cascaded loosely, spilling over Ling Yanzhi’s shoulder, with a few strands curling around his wrist.

Delicate brows, long lashes—a sickly sort of beauty.

CLICK.

A low rumble sounded as the surrounding walls slid apart like glass doors, revealing the deep expanse of the Blue Star sky.

Enormous wings unfolded from Ling Yanzhi’s back, their dark feathers glinting with golden patterns.

Sheng Yue stepped forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Pei Yin, and they both looked down.

He saw her cover her eyes as they descended. The wings swept the ground upon landing, kicking up fine motes of dust.

The girl in the warm yellow nightdress was the only spot of color in the somber scene.

Without his permission, Pei Yin’s brain filed away a new piece of information: ’She’s afraid of heights. She has to cover her eyes.’

Snapping out of it, Pei Yin felt a surge of irritation. "What was it he said before?"

’That flying low would dirty Red Snake’s wings? That only low-Level trash skims the ground?’

"How ridiculous." Pei Yin couldn’t muster a laugh. "Do you think they’ll sleep together tonight?"

"I don’t know." Sheng Yue’s expression was as robotic and emotionless as ever.

Pei Yin ground his teeth. "Switch to manual."

Sheng Yue turned his head. "You’re being verbose."

"Damn it." Pei Yin’s mouth twitched. He was already furious, and this just stoked the flames.

Sheng Yue couldn’t be bothered to respond. He took two steps forward until one foot was over the edge, leaned his body forward, and plummeted straight down like a falling star.

The air shrieked as it tore around him, his cool-toned white uniform leaving a trail of afterimages.

Blurring, overlapping, and then vanishing.

Pei Yin looked up, his gaze fixed on the private blue screen projected by his Star Brain.

Xi Yu: Who sent her?

The previous message was from him: Jian Yu. Get here now.

"..." Pei Yin closed his eyes for a moment, then followed, leaping forcefully into the air.

’What a mess!’

「Villa No. 6.」

「Second Floor.」

Flying in through the open floor-to-ceiling windows, Ling Yanzhi made a gesture to open the bedroom partition.

The invisible partition began to dissolve. The horizontal boundary of light and shadow faded until it merged seamlessly with the surrounding space.

A section of the floor sank, and a large bed slowly ascended, its base wreathed in a faint blue light, like an energy field supporting its frame.

"I noticed you were looking at Sheng Yue the longest. What, am I not as handsome as him?"

Ling Yanzhi placed Jian Yu on the bed, his voice laced with a hint of jealousy.

"I’d rather not say. I don’t want it to go to your head." Jian Yu’s eyelashes fluttered as she reached out and tugged on one of his fingers. "Aren’t you sleepy?"

’There she goes again, acting all cute.’

Ling Yanzhi was a little dazed and flustered, the tips of his ears growing warm.

’Doesn’t want it to go to my head? That must mean she thinks I’m more handsome.’

’Wait a minute, I didn’t plan on sleeping with her!’

Looking at the person already occupying half of his bed, Ling Yanzhi hesitated for a moment before silently lying down.

A moment later, he scooted closer and pulled her into his embrace.
