Chapter 38: Chapter 38
Seeing the sudden coldness in Evan Fairchild’s eyes, she realized she had been too direct. "My contract with Stellaris is for five years. It hasn’t expired yet."
"Starfall will cover the termination fee."
"I have no fame to speak of, and no significant work to my name."
"I’m not planning on paying you much, either."
"Thank you, President Fairchild, but I still don’t want to leave Stellaris."
Evan Fairchild’s gaze instantly frosted over. "My apologies for bothering you."
Jasper Rockwell suddenly darted out from the shadows and grabbed Melody Monroe’s hand.
Melody Monroe jumped in fright. ’Where did this guy come from all of a sudden?’
"You’re my idol!"
"Huh?"
"You’re the first person to ever reject Evan Fairchild."
"Huh??"
"From now on, we’re friends!" With that, Jasper Rockwell took off like a gust of wind.
"Huh???"
Leaving Melody Monroe standing there alone, reeling from the triple whammy of confusion.
’Does Evan Fairchild know him? Is he a little nuts?’
Evan Fairchild had already disappeared from sight. She breathed a quiet sigh of relief; every time she was with him, she felt like she was suffocating.
"Melody!" Rose Shaw’s voice sounded from behind her.
Melody Monroe immediately turned around. "Rose."
Rose Shaw walked up, her eyes sizing up the suit jacket draped over Melody Monroe’s shoulders.
"Rose, I..."
"We’ll talk outside."
Melody Monroe followed Rose Shaw and walked outside.
Rose Shaw got straight into the car. Melody Monroe opened the passenger door and sat down.
"I never thought President King would do something like that to you."
"Rose, you knew?"
"Yes. I knew he was a lecher, but I never heard of anything as serious as him forcing someone. Melody, I don’t understand you anymore. Isn’t this kind of thing what you’ve always wanted? If you’d agreed to President King’s proposal, by next year at the latest, even if you couldn’t become an A-lister, you’d definitely be a top star."
’It’s true. If this had happened to the original owner of this body, she would have jumped at the chance.’
"Rose, I want to rely on my own abilities and work hard to achieve the success I want. I don’t want to go down that path anymore."
Rose Shaw was clearly unconvinced. "That jacket you’re wearing belongs to President Fairchild, doesn’t it?"
"Yes, it’s his. But I swear, I wasn’t trying to seduce him."
"Where would you even get the confidence to try and seduce Evan Fairchild?"
"Rose, do you think I rejected President King because I’m aiming for Evan Fairchild? Like you just said, what kind of person is Evan Fairchild? Is he someone I could even hope to get involved with? I’m serious. I’m a mother now. I have Ian. I don’t want to be that kind of person."
A flicker of emotion finally showed in Rose Shaw’s eyes.
She hadn’t believed Melody Monroe at first, but now, she felt that Melody wasn’t lying.
But Melody Monroe’s transformation was just too great. Ever since her injury, it was like she had become a completely different person.
"Take a look at this."
Rose Shaw took something out of her bag and handed it to Melody Monroe.
Melody Monroe took it and stared, her expression one of utter shock. She extended a finger, pointing at it as she counted, "Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands..."
"It’s three million!" Rose Shaw couldn’t help but interrupt. "At the charity gala the other night, you didn’t even show up, but you donated three million. Which one of your sugar daddies donated this in your name?"
Melody Monroe held the document, her hands trembling. "What sugar daddy?! Why didn’t they just give the three million to me! I could’ve bought a house so Ian and I wouldn’t have to live in a rental anymore!"
Rose Shaw: "..."
"You don’t know who it was?"
