Chapter 39: Chapter 39: The Phone
"If I’d known who donated that three million, I never would have made my own donation! Not for anything! I don’t care about the moral high ground, I just want Ian to have a good life! Rose, that money... is there any way to get it back?"
Rose Shaw: ...
"We can keep this under wraps for now and reveal it in the future to add to your success."
’So that means there’s no getting it back.’
Melody Monroe remained silent, wincing inwardly at the loss.
’Three million!’
’Based on Rockwellburg’s real estate prices, that’s enough to buy a large four-bedroom apartment! No, no, maybe a small four-bedroom. I’d still have to set up a study for Ian. Then I could save the rest as an emergency fund for him.’
’Just imagining it was blissful!’
’But... reality was...’
Her heart began to throb with pain again.
’Who is this sponsor anyway?!’
’They must have more money than sense!’
"Melody, Melody!" Rose Shaw called out twice.
"Ah! Rose," Melody Monroe replied, snapping out of her thoughts.
"If that’s really how you think, you’re going to miss out on a lot of opportunities, and your path will be much harder. But that’s life. You win some, you lose some. It all depends on your perspective."
"Mm," Melody Monroe nodded. "Rose, thank you."
"What are you thanking me for? I’m not the one who got you out of that mess today."
"Thank you for not giving up on me."
"This is the path you’ve chosen. If you’re not afraid, why should I be?"
Melody Monroe smiled at Rose Shaw. "Rose, I’m so glad I know you."
Rose Shaw’s thin, sensual lips moved, but she didn’t make a sound.
"Oh, right, Rose, about President King..."
"He found out it was Evan Fairchild who hit him. He was so scared he didn’t dare make a peep and just slunk off to the hospital on his own."
Melody Monroe breathed a sigh of relief. "I’m sorry. Because of me, you’ve offended people like President King and Director Wendy."
"It’s no big deal. Where are you headed? I’ll give you a ride."
"Back to the hotel. I have a shoot tomorrow."
"Okay."
Rose Shaw put on some music. It seemed she was in a pretty good mood.
Before, she had seen Melody Monroe as just a business partner. Melody wanted to get famous at any cost, and as her agent, it was Rose’s duty to make that happen.
Now that Melody had suddenly changed her mind, these choices could affect her acting career. She might never become a star because of this. And yet, Rose found that being with Melody felt much more relaxed.
Back at the hotel, Melody Monroe immediately took a shower. She had just stepped out of the bathroom when Talia rushed over, holding out a phone to her.
"Melody, Melody! Quick, look! I just got the news! This is for the scene you’re shooting tomorrow!"
Melody Monroe looked at Talia Mercer in confusion as she dried her hair. "I know. What are you so excited about?"
"You have a scene with Zane Langdon tomorrow! With Zane Langdon!"
"’What’s so exciting about that? Where’s my phone? I haven’t heard it ring this whole time." Melody Monroe turned to look for her phone. She still needed to call Ian!
’My phone!’
’Wait!’
’I think... I left it in the restroom at the bar!’
...
「Ten minutes earlier.」
Ian Monroe sat on his little bed and checked the time.
It was nine-thirty, time for him to go to sleep, but his mommy still hadn’t called.
’I miss Mommy so much.’
’Can I call Mommy?’
Ian Monroe furrowed his brow, phone watch in hand, hesitating. In the end, he keyed in his mother’s number and made the call.
...
On a minimalist black-and-white desk, a phone lay.
This was one of Evan Fairchild’s apartments. At that moment, he was busy checking his email and handling work.
