Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Miles York Makes Brooke York an Assistant
She weighed herself beforehand. Over the weekend, Chloe York ate and slept, slept and ate. After two days of indulgence, she weighed herself again and hadn’t gained a single pound. This was something she couldn’t have even imagined before.
Luckily, Alice Cole took Brooke York out for tea with other wealthy ladies every weekend. Her goal was to inform them all ahead of time that Brooke was her real daughter now. Otherwise, Chloe wouldn’t have been able to live so freely these past two days.
She woke up bright and early the next day. When Chloe York came downstairs, Brooke York was already sitting at the dining table, waiting, as a servant set out breakfast.
Hearing the sound, Brooke York looked up and saw Chloe York coming down the stairs. Brooke’s gaze darkened. Even though she was the true heiress, Chloe had been raised in a wealthy family her whole life. The aura she carried was something Brooke couldn’t compare to.
"Chloe, good morning!" Brooke York flashed a gentle smile.
Whenever someone was around, Brooke York always put on this gentle, understanding facade.
Just as expected, when Mrs. Woods heard Brooke York, her fondness for the recently returned young miss grew even stronger. A polite, magnanimous young lady like her was exactly who they liked.
Unlike that fake heiress, Chloe York, who was always bossing the servants around.
A smile tugged at her lips. "Brooke, good morning!"
Brooke York’s smile froze. ’What’s going on? Why is she being so polite?’ She had been hoping Chloe would ignore her, which would have made her own politeness stand out even more.
Mrs. Woods also froze for a moment, but she quickly recovered. ’She’s just a fake, after all. She’s probably just putting on an act because she’s afraid of being kicked out.’
Sitting down at the table, Chloe York looked at the food before her, her appetite particularly strong.
Soon, Alice Cole and Miles York came downstairs as well. After a brief exchange of greetings, the family ate breakfast in silence, adhering to the strict rule of not speaking at the table.
Miles York didn’t eat much and soon dabbed his mouth with a napkin. Brooke York and Alice Cole, naturally, also ate sparingly. They had to maintain their figures.
Only Chloe York was still eating with gusto. The reason she used to grind so hard was because her family was poor; if she didn’t hustle, there was no way out. Now that there was so much good food, she had to eat her fill.
"Chloe York, what’s with your table manners!" Alice Cole watched Chloe shovel a large spoonful of bird’s nest soup into her wide-open mouth, followed by one shrimp dumpling and crab roe bun after another, as if she hadn’t eaten in ages. Not only were her manners unsightly, but the fact that she was eating so much, all on the York Family’s dime, just rubbed Alice the wrong way.
After swallowing unhurriedly, Chloe York finally looked at Alice Cole. "You can try to control the heavens and the earth, but you can’t control when people eat or take a crap. You’re overstepping."
"What kind of nonsense is that?" Ever since finding out Chloe York wasn’t her biological daughter, Alice Cole felt like she could only see Chloe’s faults, which seemed endless. And her character was simply awful.
"That’s enough," Miles York said. Alice Cole fell silent, but not before shooting Chloe York a hateful glare.
"You two need to focus more on your studies and get into a good university. That way, we can throw you a grander college entrance banquet."
Miles York’s words were a reminder to them both: whether true heiress or fake, he only cared about results. Whoever could bring him face would earn his favor.
"Honey, don’t you worry. Brooke scored over five hundred on the mock exam. We’ll definitely throw a huge banquet. You can start thinking about who to put on the invitation list now," Alice Cole said, brimming with confidence in Brooke York.
Miles York glanced at Brooke York with approval. Scoring over five hundred on the mock exam was indeed a good result. As long as she performed consistently and worked a little harder, she could have her pick of top universities.
"Brooke, after the college entrance exams, you can come to the company and be my assistant. Get a little early experience." With these words, Miles York had clearly given Brooke York his stamp of approval.
Joy blossomed in Brooke York’s heart. "Okay, Dad!" Her eyes swept over Chloe York without a trace of notice. ’Dad’s words prove that I’ll be the future heir to the Sheridan Group, while Chloe York, this imposter, will just be a pawn for the York Family to marry off for their own benefit.’
Brooke York wasn’t the only one who was happy; Alice Cole was just as thrilled. She shot a triumphant look at Chloe York. Her biggest fear now was that this malicious person would covet something belonging to her daughter.
Chloe York felt both of their gazes on her and found it almost funny. ’In the novel’s plot, it was clearly Alice Cole who made the initial mistake of taking the wrong baby, which led to all of this. Just because the York Family is richer, and because my original body’s parents are gone, Brooke York had a difficult childhood. So it’s my fault? My biological parents’ fault?’
By the time Chloe York had eaten and drunk her fill and came outside, the driver had already left with Brooke York. Unsurprised, Chloe decided to take the bus to school. Thankfully, the York Family’s villa wasn’t on some remote mountainside, but in a villa district within the city.
After a bus ride that swayed and rocked for nearly an hour, Chloe York finally arrived at school.
"Chloe, I heard you were amazing on Friday! You actually beat Brooke York in a classical poetry recitation contest!" As soon as Chloe York sat down, she was met with a big bear hug from her desk mate.
This was Stella Winters, her desk mate and the first friend the original owner of the body had made after returning. According to the novel, she was the only person who helped the original Chloe with a few thousand yuan after she was kicked out, before eventually going abroad.
Coincidentally, Stella Winters had been on leave when she first transmigrated.
"It was nothing."
"Nothing?" Stella Winters’s voice suddenly shot up, her face a mask of disbelief. "Chloe York, you’re so different now it’s scaring me!"
Chloe York just smiled without a word. She couldn’t blame Stella Winters for being shocked. The difference between her and the original Chloe was huge. Before she arrived, Stella had even told the original Chloe to at least try to score a six on the next exam instead of intentionally getting a zero.
Just then, Stella Winters leaned in conspiratorially toward Chloe York. "Chloe, tell me. Are you like one of those characters in a novel? Did your soul get swapped? Or maybe... did you get bound to a system?"
Hearing this, Chloe York’s heart skipped a beat. Meeting Stella Winters’s suspicious gaze, she suppressed her panic and feigned a relaxed tone. "What are you talking about? How’s that possible? You said it yourself, that stuff only happens in novels."
"Then how do you explain the sudden change?"
"I just realized I need to work hard. You know I’m not really a daughter of the York Family. If I don’t put in the effort, my future is going to be miserable."
Hearing this, Stella Winters’s heart ached for her. She immediately puffed out her chest. "Chloe, don’t you worry! From now on, as long as I have a mouthful of soup to drink, you’ll have a bowl to lick!"
"Wow, thanks a lot!"
"You’re welcome! What are best desk mates for? But hey, if you start doing better than me on tests, doesn’t that mean I’ll be last in the class?"
This was another reason the two got along so well. Chloe York was always dead last, and Stella Winters was always second to last.
"Congratulations, you can take the throne for number one now."
"Nooo!" Stella Winters wailed.

She was already planning to work on some worksheets. Hearing this, Chloe York didn’t hesitate for a second, immediately pulling them out and starting on the problems.
