Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Saving Someone Again
Seeing Chloe York suddenly pull out an exam paper and start working on it, Stella Winters was truly shocked yet again. Normally, that paper would have been crumpled into a ball by now!
"Brooke, look at Chloe York putting on an act again. That classical poetry quiz on Friday? She definitely just got lucky—a blind squirrel finding a nut. You’re a top student who can score over five hundred on the mock exams. And look at her, her total score was only 6!" Clara Bell said, watching Chloe focus on her exam paper. She relentlessly put Chloe down while never forgetting to lavish praise on Brooke York.
Clara Bell and Chloe York had known each other for several years, so she knew Chloe’s personality and habits all too well.
She thought her flattery would be well-received, but hearing her words only filled Brooke York with annoyance. She didn’t want to be reminded of losing to Chloe York on Friday at all.
"Don’t mention what happened on Friday again," Brooke York said, her tone edged with displeasure.
The smile on Clara Bell’s face froze. Realizing her mistake, she quickly tried to placate her. "Okay, I won’t mention it again. Don’t be mad."
Gazing at Chloe York, who was diligently working on her paper, Brooke York clenched her fists beneath her sleeves. ’I’m just waiting for the day the college entrance exam results are announced. Then, I’ll crush Chloe under my heel and make her regret usurping my life as the wealthy family’s daughter for all these years.’
The hallway suddenly grew lively, with students all excitedly heading in the same direction.
Clara Bell quickly grabbed a passing student to ask, "Hey, what’s going on?"
"Ethan Prescott and Evan Shaw are having their final pre-graduation basketball game over at the main sports field!" the girl exclaimed, her voice filled with excitement. The moment she finished speaking, she shook off Clara Bell’s hand and rushed toward the field, as if afraid she’d miss it.
Hearing this, all the students in the class forgot about their books and rushed excitedly from the classroom to the main sports field.
After all, Ethan Prescott and Evan Shaw were legendary figures at their school. Both were exceptionally handsome, and ever since their first year, they had been at odds over the title of Campus Prince, turning them into bitter rivals.
"Chloe, it’s your fiancé’s basketball game! This is his last one in high school, you have to go and show your support! Come on," Clara Bell said excitedly.
Hearing this, Chloe York didn’t even look up. "I’m not going."
’In my previous life, all the seniors were racing against the clock, cramming with exam papers and practice problems, wishing they could split one minute into two,’ she thought. ’But in this novel, there’s no sense of the impending college entrance exams at all. And yet, one plot point after another keeps happening so diligently! And they still have the nerve to go watch a basketball game?’
"Ethan Prescott, Chloe! It’s Ethan Prescott! Are you sure you’re not going!?" It was one thing for her to be studying, but to not even be interested in her own fiancé? In the past, whenever she heard about one of Ethan’s games, she was guaranteed to be there, water bottle in hand. ’Is this really the Chloe York I know?’
"Yeah, I have to study. You go on your own."
Seeing Chloe so focused on her paper, Stella Winters simply pulled her to her feet. "Oh, come on! You can work on the paper when we get back. Don’t miss this and then regret it later, blaming me for not dragging you along."
This wasn’t the first time something like this had happened. Chloe would get angry about Ethan Prescott and Brooke York being too close and refuse to go to his games. Then, after she had managed to forgive Ethan on her own, she would turn around and blame Stella for not making her go in the first place.
As she was being dragged along, Chloe York quickly grabbed her two exam papers to take with her.
"See? I told you she was just putting on an act. Look, she’s going now. Brooke, let’s go too!" The moment Clara Bell saw Chloe leave, she linked her arm through Brooke York’s, eager to follow.
"I’m not going. I still need to review," Brooke York declined.
"But if you don’t go, a certain someone will be very unhappy when he doesn’t see you there!"
Knowing Clara Bell was talking about Ethan Prescott, Brooke York blushed. "Don’t say that. He’s Chloe’s fiancé now."
"But you’re the true heiress of the York Family! This engagement was supposed to be yours. Besides, you and Ethan Prescott are perfect for each other, a talented man and a beautiful woman from families of equal standing. You two are a match made in heaven."
"Oh, come on, let’s go!" Clara Bell said, pulling Brooke York toward the main sports field.
After some half-hearted resistance, Brooke York allowed Clara Bell to lead her to the main sports field.
The atmosphere at the main sports field was electric. Everyone was cheering, with the crowd in the stands divided into sections to root for their respective teams.
"Ethan Prescott, Campus Prince Prescott, go!"
"Evan Shaw, Campus Prince Shaw, you’re the best!!!"
On the basketball court, two teams stood ready, one in white jerseys and the other in blue. The leaders of both teams were particularly striking—tall and straight-backed like poplars, radiating a bright, handsome charm.
This sports field, buzzing with youthful energy, made Chloe York feel like she was in a different world. ’I only ever saw scenes like this in college,’ she thought. ’I never expected to see one in high school.’
Stella Winters pulled Chloe York to a seat in the section cheering for Ethan Prescott. Brooke York and Clara Bell, who arrived after them, also chose the same section.
After sitting down, Chloe York opened her papers and started working on the exam. Besides the two figures on the court, the most eye-catching sight was Chloe herself, doing an exam in the stands. This anomaly quickly drew the attention of others.
"Is that Chloe York from Senior Class 6 doing an exam paper?"
"Looks like her. Did the sun rise in the west today? She’s actually doing a test paper. Isn’t she usually clinging to Ethan Prescott every chance she gets?"
"She probably had a fight with Ethan Prescott. She’s deliberately doing her paper here to get his attention."
"I heard she got a 6 on the mock exam!" The statement was laced with deep scorn.
"So what’s her plan now, study every day to raise her score by one point?"
"There are still about a hundred days until the college entrance exam. If she adds one point a day, maybe she has a shot." The comment was followed by a wave of laughter.
But the game began soon after, and everyone’s attention was drawn back to the action on the court.
The two teams engaged in a fierce match, the cheers from the crowd growing louder with each passing moment, but Chloe York remained completely immersed in the world of her test questions.
Several times, an excited Stella Winters tugged on Chloe York, urging her to watch, but Chloe remained completely unmoved.
Just then, the System’s voice suddenly rang out in her mind.
Godly Rich System: [Host, two people on the basketball court have been accidentally injured. Choose one to help take to the infirmary.]
She lifted her gaze and, sure enough, saw a figure in blue on the court unexpectedly collide with a figure in white. Both of them fell to the ground at the same time.
The crowd gasped, but for a moment, no one reacted. Then, suddenly, everyone noticed a figure bolting onto the court and running toward the two players on the ground. It was none other than Chloe York.
The moment she saw the players fall, Chloe York shoved her exam papers at Stella Winters and sprinted toward the center of the court. ’No one better try to beat me to it!’ she thought. ’I’m going to be the one to help, and I’m going to get that reward!’
"That silly girl," Stella Winters muttered as she came to her senses, watching her friend sprint away. "And she said she didn’t care about Ethan Prescott anymore. The moment she sees him get hurt, she runs faster than anyone." Sighing, she started tidying up the exam papers. "Good thing I dragged her here."
As the other students in the crowd registered what was happening, they all had the same thought as Stella. Just moments ago, she was acting completely indifferent, but now that someone was hurt, she was off like a shot.
