Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Alice Cole Wants to Vent Her Anger on Chloe York

A maid informed Brooke York that Ethan Prescott had come over to swap the marriage agreements. She couldn’t wait to get downstairs, and sure enough, she saw Ethan and Miss Prescott on the sofa.

Seeing Brooke York, Ethan Prescott quickly stood up and walked over.

"Ethan, what are you doing here?" Brooke York asked, feigning ignorance.

"I came with my grandmother. She wants to thank you for saving her." The more Ethan looked at Brooke York, the more he liked her. ’She’s countless times better than that Chloe York.’

"Me?" Brooke York was confused. ’I saved Ethan’s grandmother? Why don’t I have any memory of it?’

"Brooke, hurry and greet her as ’Grandma’," Alice Cole said as she returned with the marriage agreement, quickly telling Brooke to address her properly.

Ethan Prescott pulled Brooke York over to Miss Prescott.

Miss Prescott frowned at Ethan. ’He said he wanted to change the marriage arrangement, so why is he still dallying with this fake heiress? And this Mrs. Sheridan is so incompetent. Since the real daughter is back, and she despises the fake one so much, why hasn’t she sent her away?’

Brooke York looked at the old woman before her and obediently called out, "Grandma."

Miss Prescott’s reaction left Ethan Prescott and Alice Cole baffled. Why was she suddenly so cold?

Placing the gilt-edged marriage agreement on the table, Alice said, "These two children are truly fated to be together. And as luck would have it, Brooke was the one who saved you, Miss Prescott..."

"Who told you she was the one who saved me?" Miss Prescott interrupted before Alice Cole could finish.

That one sentence made the smile on Alice Cole’s face freeze. Ethan Prescott was also stunned. For a moment, the vast living room fell completely silent.

In a baffled tone, Ethan asked, "Grandma, the person who saved you... wasn’t it Brooke?"

Miss Prescott’s gaze was clear, her tone certain. "The girl who saved me is named Chloe York, not some Brooke York. And she certainly doesn’t look like this."

"What? It was Chloe York?" Alice Cole cried out, shooting to her feet.

"Grandma, you must be mistaken!" Ethan Prescott insisted. He’d been on cloud nine all last night. His parents liked Chloe York, and he’d been worried they wouldn’t agree to the swap.

But if Brooke York had saved his grandmother, and his grandmother approved of the swap, the matter would have been settled. But now, he was being told that the person who saved his grandmother was none other than the one he detested most—Chloe York!

"I may be old, but I’m not so senile that I can’t even recognize my own savior."

Brooke York clenched her teeth in secret. ’I can’t believe Chloe York actually saved Miss Prescott, and Alice Cole and Ethan thought it was me.’

"How could it be her!" Alice Cole looked as though she simply couldn’t accept it.

At that moment, it also dawned on Miss Prescott: the Chloe York who had saved her was the very same "unlikable fake heiress" Alice Cole had been talking about.

"Grandma, Chloe... she was feeling down yesterday because her grades weren’t great, so she went out with some friends today to take her mind off things."

Brooke York was already scheming, trying to pull her old tricks. ’After all,’ she thought, ’a family like the Prescotts must value intelligence above all else!’

Miss Prescott gave a faint smile. "Good grades are secondary. A person’s character is what truly matters."

Brooke York’s smile froze. ’This damned old hag! She’s clearly implying there’s something wrong with my character!’

Alice Cole understood the implication as well, but she didn’t dare say anything.

Although their own family was considered wealthy, the Prescott Family was a top-tier powerhouse with a century-long legacy. They were not people they could easily afford to offend.

"Grandma, Brooke isn’t just a good student; she’s also gentle and kind. If she had been the one who ran into you, she definitely would have saved you too," Ethan explained to his grandmother, hoping to make her like Brooke York.

"That’s right, Miss Prescott. Chloe’s grades really aren’t ideal, and as her elders, we’re quite worried. We never noticed she was so helpful before. I imagine Brooke’s return must have had an influence on her, and Chloe has started to slowly change for the better."

Even though it was Chloe York who had saved her, Alice Cole managed to attribute half the credit to Brooke York in just a few sentences.

But Miss Prescott had lived for the better part of a century; how could she not see through Alice Cole’s manipulations?

"Since Chloe isn’t home, I’ll come back another day. I apologize for the intrusion." Miss Prescott stood up, clearly not wanting to say any more.

Despite the major misunderstanding, Alice Cole was a woman who had weathered her share of storms. She quickly composed herself and stood up. "Miss Prescott, please take care on your way out."

Ethan Prescott gave Brooke York a reassuring look. Brooke shook her head to show she was fine. ’She’s just an old woman. I’m not that concerned about her.’

Just then, Chloe York happened to return from completing her mission.

"Chloe." Miss Prescott, who had just walked into the courtyard, saw Chloe York returning from outside and immediately rushed forward to grasp her hands.

Compared to the cold attitude she had shown Brooke York moments ago, Miss Prescott’s current enthusiasm made her seem like a completely different person.

"Grandma! What are you doing here?" Chloe York was quite surprised to see Miss Prescott.

"You silly girl, I told you I would come to your home to thank you in person! Have you forgotten?"

Chloe had thought it was just a polite comment.

"Grandma, you’re being too kind."

"Child, you’re my savior. This old lady is not the ungrateful type. Another day, why don’t you come shopping with me? I’ll buy you whatever you like, how does that sound?"

Miss Prescott’s gaze softened. The more she looked at Chloe York, the more she liked her, and at the same time, she couldn’t help but feel her heart ache for the girl.

After a cool glance at Alice Cole, Chloe York said calmly, "Whether it’s swapped or not, is that for you to decide?" With that, she turned and entered the house, not bothering to spare Alice Cole another glance.

Fuming at Chloe York’s attitude, Alice Cole’s chest heaved violently.

"Mom, don’t be angry. Maybe... we should just let Chloe have the marriage. After all, when the engagement was first arranged, it was between Chloe and Ethan."

"Brooke, you don’t need to worry about this. Your main task right now is to prepare for the college entrance exams in three months. Once you get into a good university, we’ll throw a grand matriculation banquet for you."

"As for Chloe York, she’ll definitely fail the exam. When that happens, I’ll talk to your father about sending her away to pave the way for our York Family. After freeloading off the York Family for so many years, it’s about time she repaid us."

Alice thought hatefully that as soon as the college entrance exams were over, she would have Miles York find some degenerate and send Chloe York to him. Only then could she finally vent her anger.
