Chapter 39: Chapter 39: She Wants to Rent Her Own Place

Last night, when she heard Chloe York could be useful to the family company, she’d felt that after raising her for so long and pouring so much money into her, they were finally seeing a return on their investment.

But seeing her like this today, it left a bad taste in her mouth.

"Mom, don’t be angry. Dad is just doing this for the company. After all, Chloe York is so famous now. If she goes around spouting nonsense, saying we mistreated her, it could incite netizens to attack us. That wouldn’t be good for the company."

"What could she possibly say? Does she have the nerve? Is there anyone who doesn’t know she’s the fake daughter? The York Family are her benefactors. If it weren’t for us, she wouldn’t be where she is today." Alice Cole had always felt that Chloe York had enjoyed far too many of their family’s privileges.

So, in her mind, Chloe York should be living a miserable life, trampled under everyone’s feet. That was what she wanted to see; only that would be satisfying.

"That may be true, but you can’t underestimate the power of the internet. Especially now that she’s done a good deed. If we say anything bad about her, we’ll be the ones who look like villains."

Alice Cole didn’t say anything else, but the heaving of her chest and the look on her face made it clear she was still furious.

"Mom, don’t worry. I have a way to get back at her."

"What is it?" At her words, Alice Cole’s eyes lit up.

"I’ll tell you once it’s done." Brooke York decided to keep her mother in suspense for now.

"Fine." Alice Cole trusted Brooke York. After all, this was her own daughter, and she could tell she was a smart girl.

A small pink car was parked by the door. A man stood beside it, and when he saw the two of them approaching, he hurriedly bowed. "Sir, Miss."

"Chloe, see? You like the car, don’t you!" Miles York figured that since Chloe was a girl, she would surely like pink, so he had specially prepared a small pink car for her. He had called someone in the middle of the night to have it delivered.

"Yeah, it’s fine. I’m heading to school."

The driver immediately understood, opening the car door and placing a hand on the roof of the frame to keep Chloe from bumping her head.

"Be back early tonight!" Miles York waved. The moment the car disappeared around the corner, his smile vanished.

He had arranged the car and driver for the sole purpose of keeping an eye on Chloe York. Right now, she was his lucky cat, and he was terrified his lucky cat might escape his control. He had to watch her constantly.

Another car drove up and stopped in front of him. The driver got out, opened the rear passenger door, and Miles York slid in.

"What’s the situation at the company?"

"President, our company’s stock price surged again last night. We also have a lot of potential partners looking to work with us. The team is having a hard time choosing!"

The secretary’s voice was filled with delight. The company had been stagnating for a while due to a lack of innovation, which had led many former partners to sever ties.

Who would have thought that thanks to the president’s daughter, the company would finally start to turn around?

Miles York was very pleased with this answer. "Tell the team to vet them carefully. Whether or not our company can use this opportunity to reach the next level all comes down to their judgment."

"Understood."

When they arrived at the school, the driver dutifully opened the door for Chloe York. "Take care, Miss. I’ll be here to pick you up this afternoon."

"Okay."

Chloe York headed onto campus. The moment she was through the gates, she leaned against a nearby wall. After a moment, she peeked cautiously back outside. Just as she expected, the driver hadn’t left. He had found a parking spot with a clear view of every student entering and leaving the main gate.

’My brain might not be at its best right now, but I still have the habit from my past life of never trusting anyone.’ This man was a driver on the surface, but he was actually sent by Miles York to watch her.

’I can bring so much value to the company now. He’s afraid I’ll get into an accident, but he’s also afraid I’ll do something to embarrass him. All in all, it’s better for him to keep me under watch.’

"Chloe, what are you looking at?" Stella Winters tapped Chloe York on the shoulder, making her jump.

When she turned and saw it was Stella Winters, Chloe York breathed a sigh of relief. "Stella, you scared the life out of me."

"Sorry about that, Chloe! I just saw you acting all sneaky over here. What’s up? Are there reporters trying to get a candid shot of you?"

Stella Winters copied Chloe, crouching down to peer outside, scanning for anyone carrying a camera.

"No reporters taking pictures." Chloe York pulled Stella Winters to her feet and led her away. "Stella, does the school have a back gate?"

"It does!"

"Where is it? And where does it lead out to?"

"It’s over by the main athletic field. It leads out to a residential complex."

"A residential complex?" Hearing this, Chloe’s heart leaped. ’I’ve been wanting to find a place near the school, but it needs to be in a safe area. If I could rent an apartment right next to campus, that would be perfect.’

"Yep!"

"What’s the complex like? Are there places for rent?"

At this, Stella Winters finally realized what Chloe was getting at. "Chloe, you’re not thinking of renting an apartment, are you?"

"I am. I’m moving out of the Yorks’ house."

"For real?"

"Of course."

"I support you, Chloe, but... do you have the money? You’re still a minor, you know. Living on your own is expensive, and it’s not that safe!"

Stella Winters voiced her concerns and the potential problems. They were still students, after all. Safety was the most important factor when living alone. Plus, she knew that since Chloe was the "fake daughter" of the York Family, she probably didn’t have much money. With monthly rent on top of that, she worried Chloe wouldn’t be able to manage.

"It’s fine, I have money. And as for safety, I figure if I’m right next to the school, there shouldn’t be any problems."

Stella Winters nodded. "If you rent in the complex by the back gate, it should be pretty safe. Some of our teachers live there, and I think some students’ parents do, too."

"That settles it, then. I’ll go take a look this afternoon."

"But we have evening self-study tonight!"

"I’m skipping it." ’Evening self-study is only two hours. If I can use that time to find a place nearby, I could walk home from school in just a few minutes. It’s so much closer than going back to the Yorks’ house. I’d save so much more time for studying.’

"Are you sure?"

"Positive."

"Then I’m skipping too," Stella Winters decided instantly.

"Why would you skip?"

"If you’re not going, why would I?" Stella said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

"That’s not it. I’m going to look for an apartment, you can’t come with me." ’How can I let my friend skip class just to help me with my personal errands?’ Chloe thought.

At these words, Stella’s face fell. She looked at Chloe, hurt. "Chloe York, are we best friends or not?"
