Chapter 38: Chapter 38: The Sick Female Lead
Back in her room, Chloe York first took a quick shower, changed into her pajamas, and then started to pack her things piece by piece.
Suddenly, she heard someone trying to turn her doorknob. Frowning, she walked to the door and asked, "Who is it?"
"Chloe York."
It was Brooke York’s voice. Chloe didn’t even have to think to know Brooke was here to vent her frustrations by spitting what she considered to be harsh words.
"I’m asleep, don’t bother me," Chloe shouted, then went back to packing. Although the original owner was just a high school student, she had been the heiress of the York Family, so she had plenty of designer bags and clothes, not to mention jewelry. Chloe packed every last bit of it.
Most importantly, she made sure to carefully pack the jewelry from Miss Prescott. After all, the pieces Miss Prescott had given her weren’t just brand names; they were collector’s items.
"What, Chloe York? Are you so scared of me you don’t even dare to open the door?" Chloe had thought her shout would make Brooke York leave, but instead, she stayed and started taunting her from the doorway, not at all worried that Miles York might hear.
After all, they lived on the third floor, while Miles and the others were on the second.
When she saw that her taunts weren’t working on Chloe, Brooke York started pounding on the door. It was as if she wouldn’t be able to rest or sleep tonight unless she let out all her frustration.
"Chloe York, you’re scared, aren’t you? You are! You don’t even dare to open the door now, you coward."
"I knew it. No matter what, you can’t change the fact that you’re a coward. You’re terrified of me, right?"
Just as she was about to pound on the door again, it suddenly swung open, revealing Chloe’s impatient face.
"What are you trying to do now?"
Chloe York decided Brooke York was seriously sick in the head. ’This kind of psycho is the female lead? Guess there are no standards for novels these days. Anyone can be a protagonist.’
"Well, aren’t you something special!" Just as expected, the moment Brooke York saw Chloe, she started with her snide remarks.
Chloe didn’t say anything, just leaned against the door and waited for her to continue.
"I thought you couldn’t make any waves, but I underestimated you. Let me tell you, I won’t let you have it easy."
"And? Is there anything else you want to say?" Chloe was getting sick of hearing these lines.
"Dad is only nice to you now because you have value to him. The moment you’re worthless, he’ll kick you out of the York Family and let you fend for yourself."
"I’m the one and only heiress of the York Family. Even if I have no use, Mom and Dad would never abandon me, because I’m their biological daughter. I’m the real heiress of the York Family, not someone a fake like you can compare to."
"Seriously? It’s always the same old lines. I remember you saying the exact same thing when I first came back!"
Seeing that Chloe completely disregarded her threats and maintained the same attitude, Brooke York grew even more furious.
"Chloe York, don’t you get cocky. I’ll be waiting for the day you’re kicked out of the York Family."
"Okay, okay, whatever you say." Chloe tossed out the sentence and shut the door, not wanting to hear another word from Brooke York.
’Would she be stupid enough to just wait for them to kick her out? She was well aware that Miles York was only so enthusiastic because her rescue had gone viral online, and he stood to benefit from it.’
The large apartment, unlit, felt somewhat empty and grim. By the floor-to-ceiling windows, a man in a bathrobe gently swirled a wine glass held in his long, pale fingers.
Moonlight spilled onto the man’s rather somber face, making him appear even colder.
He had been in a foul mood ever since his meal with Chloe York. He knew it was because of her sudden change in attitude and the disdain she showed him. He just didn’t understand why.
The phone on the table suddenly rang. He turned, walked over to the sofa, and sat down, casually crossing his legs as he picked it up to answer the call.
"Hello."
"Mr. Kane, I’ve investigated. We have not offended the York Family, nor have any of the Kanes offended Miss York. In fact, you could say there has been no contact at all."
"Fine, I understand." He hung up, his brows furrowing. ’It’s impossible that we didn’t offend her. If we hadn’t, why would she have that attitude? But his people had never made a mistake when investigating things like this.’
Not knowing where the problem lay made Adrian Kane even more agitated. He tilted his head back and downed the red wine in one go.
He set the glass down with considerable force, the sound echoing ominously in the dark night.
"Chloe York, I don’t care why you’re suddenly treating me this way. Since you saved me, the bond between us has begun."
The man’s words were filled with a predatory possessiveness. He might have been a good person in the past, but ever since he took the position of CEO of the Kane Group, "good" was no longer a word used to describe him.
That night, Chloe York packed until one in the morning. She filled two large suitcases and two small carry-on cases. The designer clothes and bags each took up one large suitcase, and she even managed to stuff two pairs of shoes inside.
She put the jewelry from Miss Prescott, along with its packaging, into a separate carry-on case. The card with two million on it went in there as well, along with her school uniform and some other daily necessities.
In her school bag, she packed the books she needed to take. Glancing around the room, she saw there was still a lot left, but none of it was particularly important.
Alice Cole would definitely not be happy to see her taking so many things. Plus, Miles York needed her so much right now that he wouldn’t let her leave. Therefore, she had to find a new place by tomorrow afternoon and move out first thing the morning after.
With this in mind, Chloe York went into the bathroom, took another shower, and then went straight to bed.
Because of how highly Miles York currently regarded Chloe, neither Brooke York nor Alice Cole dared to pull any tricks in front of him. So, when Chloe came downstairs, breakfast was already prepared, and everyone was waiting for her to join them.
"Chloe, you’re up. Come and have breakfast."
Chloe didn’t respond to Miles York’s enthusiasm. She went to the kitchen to drink water first—she couldn’t forget her task. Only after she’d had enough did she come to the dining table, sit down, and begin to eat.
Seeing Chloe’s behavior, Alice Cole was about to scold her, but a warning glance from Miles York made her resentfully swallow her words.
The four of them ate breakfast in silence. When Chloe picked up a napkin to wipe her mouth, Miles immediately did the same. "Chloe, Dad has arranged a new car for you, complete with a new driver."
"Fine."
Chloe stood up, slung her school bag over her shoulder, and walked out. Miles quickly followed.
The moment they left, Alice Cole slammed her glass of milk down on the table, having completely lost her appetite. "Is all this really necessary? So she saved someone, got a little famous, and brought in a few more business partners for the company? Do we really need to worship her like an empress at home? What would happen if we didn’t?"
