Chapter 40: Chapter 40: A Leopard Can’t Change Its Spots

"Yeah!"

"Am I a good deskmate?"

"You are."

"Then do you think I ever actually study hard during evening self-study sessions?"

Chloe York shook her head. "No."

"Exactly. So if I wasn’t going to study anyway, is it wrong for me to go with you to look for a place?"

Stella Winters’s point-by-point reasoning actually made Chloe York think there was nothing wrong with it.

"You’re right."

"So there you have it. We’re such good friends, how could I not go with you when you’re looking for an apartment? Besides, I don’t get much studying done anyway. I’d just be sitting in the classroom eating snacks. The best thing I can do is go with you and help you find a place."

’It would be a lie to say she wasn’t touched.’ The Stella Winters of now was genuinely good to her, treating her as a friend, not the original owner of this body.

Chloe York put a hand on Stella Winters’s shoulder, her expression serious. "Stella, once I find a place and move in, it’ll be your home too. You can come over whenever you want. I’ll save a room for you."

"Really?"

"Of course, it’s true. I’ll only be renting for a few months, though. After I get into university in a few months, I’m going to buy an apartment near campus. I’ll still save a room for you then. It’ll be your second home."

"Okay, in that case, I should chip in some money too."

"No need. I have money, I can cover it."

"Alright, then you can support me. Let me feel what it’s like to be taken care of by a good friend."

The two of them chatted as they walked, and before they knew it, they had arrived at their classroom. Only half the students were there. Chloe York glanced at the time—it was almost 8 a.m. She couldn’t help but marvel once again at how different the world of a novel was. They were seniors in high school, yet they still followed a normal school schedule.

She went to her seat and sat down. The way her classmates looked at her was no longer filled with the usual mockery, but with admiration. After all, Chloe York was a celebrity now.

Chloe York paid close attention during her morning classes. The Physical System’s task wasn’t complete, and the other two systems hadn’t issued any new ones. The days were calm and ordinary.

"The morning is finally over! Come on, Chloe, let’s go eat."

"Okay."

She went to the cafeteria with Stella Winters, not expecting to run into Evan Shaw again.

"No way, Campus Prince Shaw! We must be fated to meet. It feels like we run into each other in the cafeteria every time!"

"It does seem like we’re quite fated to meet," Evan replied.

"I don’t think you two should eat together. The rumors about you two dating haven’t even been cleared up yet!" Stella Winters was a little worried. The previous incident was still unresolved. The person behind it was despicable for photoshopping her out of the picture. If Chloe and Evan sat and ate together now, wouldn’t that just prove there really was something going on between them?

"This is exactly why we *should* sit together. That way, they’ll see that the three of us are eating together, not just the two of us like in the photo people shared."

"Chloe has a point."

"Fine, let’s eat together then."

The three of them found a place to sit. Sure enough, as soon as they sat down, they could feel the gazes of many other students sweeping over them.

While they were eating, Evan Shaw took the initiative to start a conversation. "Chloe, I saw the video. You’re amazing. That speed... a lot of people can’t do that."

"Thanks!" In response to Evan Shaw’s praise, Chloe York didn’t know what else to say besides thank you.

"By the way, I haven’t seen you the past couple of mornings. Did your family’s car bring you to school?"

"Yes, they arranged a car for me."

Not far away, Ethan Prescott watched Chloe York sitting with Evan Shaw, laughing happily. His hand holding his chopsticks tightened.

"Ethan, if you ask me, your fiancée is just playing hard to get. Otherwise, with so many guys at school, why would she get so close to your arch-rival, Evan Shaw?"

As Ethan Prescott’s only good friend at school, Vincent Grant felt that Ethan was being completely manipulated by Chloe York’s little tricks.

’This was a guy who never used to eat in the cafeteria, yet now he rushed right over the moment he heard Chloe York was here.’

"She’s really different from before. And she’s not playing hard to get."

Ethan Prescott’s words made Vincent Grant feel like he’d just discovered a new world.

’He really couldn’t believe those words came from his best friend. I was only on leave for half a month, right? How did I come back to find I no longer recognize my own buddy?’

"Ethan Prescott, have you ever heard the saying?"

Ethan Prescott tore his gaze away from Chloe York and looked at Vincent Grant.

"A leopard can’t change its spots."

Ethan Prescott’s expression turned cold. "What did you say?"

"No, I’m not talking about Chloe York. I’m just making an analogy. It’s impossible for a person to change so drastically all of a sudden. The most likely explanation is that she’s faking it."

Ethan Prescott said no more, picking at his food as his gaze returned to Chloe York in the distance.

’In the past, she only ever smiled like that for me. In front of others, she was always bossy and unreasonable. But now, her impatience is directed at me, while her genuine smiles are for someone else.’

Seeing Ethan Prescott like this, Vincent Grant shook his head helplessly. ’Looks like my best friend is already in deep!’

After finishing their meal and returning to the classroom, Chloe York glanced at her schedule. The afternoon class was Chinese, which was taught by their homeroom teacher.

"Ugh, it’s the homeroom teacher’s class this afternoon. Just thinking about it is annoying." Although Stella Winters didn’t take her classes very seriously, she still disliked the homeroom teacher’s period. She didn’t dare to openly eat snacks during her class and had to be a bit more restrained. Plus, the homeroom teacher always had a sour look on her face.

After a short nap and a trip to the restroom, Chloe returned to the classroom just as the bell for class rang. The moment the bell sounded, the homeroom teacher stepped into the room.

Chloe York took out her textbook and prepared to focus on the lesson. No matter how much of an issue she had with the homeroom teacher, she still had to listen attentively in class.

"Next, I’ll give you all five minutes to memorize these two ancient poems. After five minutes, I will call on students to recite them."

After the homeroom teacher finished speaking, the students quickly began to memorize, and the classroom was soon filled with the sound of recitation.

Scholar System: [Host, raise your hand to recite the two ancient poems. Reward: Wisdom value +5, Memory Value +5.]

Hearing this, Chloe York subconsciously looked up at her perpetually sour-faced homeroom teacher.

"System, can’t I complete this task in another teacher’s class?"

’She wants me to raise my hand to recite in front of *this* teacher? Would she even call on me? What a joke. I’m not going to set myself up for humiliation.’

Scholar System: [Not possible!]

"Then can I give up the task?"

Scholar System: [That is also not possible!]

With no other choice, Chloe York could only look down at her textbook and quickly begin memorizing.

The homeroom teacher watched Chloe York diligently memorizing, but she still felt a sense of displeasure. She had noticed that Chloe had been listening attentively throughout the entire class.

She could also tell that Chloe York really intended to score over fifty on the second mock exam, forcing her to apologize in front of the whole school.

Five minutes passed quickly. The homeroom teacher tapped her desk, and the students gradually quieted down.

"Alright, which students have memorized them? You may raise your hand to recite."

Chloe York raised her hand. The homeroom teacher scanned the room. As her gaze passed over Chloe, she clearly saw the raised hand but deliberately ignored it, pretending she hadn’t seen it.
