Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Making It Clear to Ethan Prescott
"Fine. When the results for the second mock exam come out, if you can get... no, if your total score for all subjects combined is 50 points, I will apologize to you for what I said today in front of the entire school."
"You said it yourself."
"Of course. All the teachers in this office, plus these two students, can be my witnesses." The homeroom teacher glanced around at everyone in the office.
"Yes, yes, me too! Chloe, I believe in you." The math teacher quickly raised his hand. He believed Chloe could do it; the Chloe of today had definitely had an intellectual awakening.
The other teachers nodded as well. Although they were teachers, they were still human. Who wouldn’t enjoy a bit of drama like this?
Besides, if Chloe really did score over fifty points, they could tell their students that hard work pays off, citing the student who went from one point on the first mock exam to over fifty on the second. If she failed, they could still tell their students that last-minute cramming is useless and just gets you belittled and looked down on. How embarrassing!
"Alright. Remember what you said today."
The homeroom teacher wasn’t scared at all. She knew how Chloe had gotten into this high school. ’If it weren’t for donating a building just to coast her way to a diploma, does she really think she’d even be on this campus?’
’If they’d found out she was the fake heiress a little sooner, she never would have even stepped foot in this high school.’
The trio walked out of the office. The other teachers scurried off to class, as they were already running a bit late. In contrast, the three of them walked at a leisurely pace.
"I’m sorry for all the trouble I’ve caused you both!"
’It was because she’d gone to get the class schedule and because she wanted the Godly Rich System’s reward for saving Evan Shaw that someone had secretly taken their picture, which ended up affecting them.’
"We’re friends. You don’t need to talk about ’trouble’ between friends." Evan Shaw didn’t think it was a big deal.
Henry Ford adjusted his glasses. "I’m the class president. I didn’t see any problem with you coming to me for a class schedule."
"It’s just that the photos of you two were probably taken by someone in your class. Plus, most of the people in the cafeteria at the time were also seniors."
Evan Shaw voiced his suspicion. Both photos were clearly taken by a senior.
"Exactly. Chloe and I suspect the same thing. And we suspect it was Brooke York," Henry Ford added, following Evan’s line of thought.
"She’s definitely deleted the photos by now."
"We should be able to find out who it was if we find the person who runs the campus wall, right?"
"If she didn’t use any of her personal information to log in, posted it, and then logged out for good, we probably won’t be able to find her."
Chloe, who had never paid attention to this sort of thing, didn’t really understand what they were talking about.
Just then, Chloe noticed Ethan Prescott walking toward them. When he saw Evan Shaw and Henry Ford, his expression soured, but he still suppressed his displeasure and walked up to Chloe.
"I need to talk to you alone for a minute." The meaning was obvious: he wanted Evan Shaw and Henry Ford to leave.
"I’m heading back," Henry Ford said before leaving. To him, Ethan Prescott was still Chloe’s fiancé, so he ought to make himself scarce to avoid any awkwardness.
Evan Shaw, however, had no intention of leaving.
Ethan Prescott shot Evan Shaw a look. "Are you going deaf at such a young age?"
Completely unfazed by Ethan Prescott’s sarcasm, Evan Shaw replied, "Well, I am Chloe’s rumored boyfriend right now. I have to keep an eye on things, just in case someone takes another picture and gives Chloe yet another boyfriend."
Ethan Prescott knew about the post on the confession wall. "You did this on purpose, didn’t you?"
"Evan, you can go back to the classroom. I’ll just have a quick word with him."
"Alright." Since Chloe had spoken, Evan Shaw obeyed. He shot a smug look at Ethan Prescott as he brushed past him.
Once Evan was a good distance away, Ethan Prescott finally asked, "Did you give Evan Shaw a pair of Bluetooth earbuds?"
"Is that all you wanted to talk about?"
"Yes."
"What’s it to you?"
He hadn’t expected Chloe to answer like that. Her attitude and tone nearly made him choke. "What do you mean it’s none of my business? You’re still my fiancée."
"Ethan Prescott, do I need to remind you? The fiancée you’re actually interested in is Brooke York. Our engagement will be called off as soon as your parents get back. So, could you please stop acting like you’re my fiancé and telling me what to do?"
Chloe’s words left Ethan Prescott completely speechless. ’She was right. He was the one who had rejected Chloe first. Besides, if Brooke York had really been the one who saved him that day, the name on the engagement agreement would have already been changed.’
Ethan Prescott left, looking completely crestfallen.
Back in the classroom, the teacher, who was in the middle of a lesson, completely ignored Chloe’s return and continued lecturing. The other students also suppressed their urge to gossip and focused on the class.
Stella Winters looked at Chloe with concern. Chloe gave her a reassuring glance, then sat down, opened her textbook, and started paying attention to the lesson, seemingly unaffected by everything.
Throughout the class, Brooke York and Clara Bell kept stealing glances at Chloe, only to find that she was acting as if nothing had happened at all. She was unnervingly calm.
By the end of the period, it was Brooke York and Clara Bell who were too distracted to pay attention to the lecture.
The bell rang, but the teacher ran over time to finish the last part of his lecture. By the time he was done, it was almost time for the next class to start.
"Class dismissed."
A moment after the teacher left the classroom, some students made a mad dash for the restrooms, but the bell for the next class rang just a short while later.
The students still in the classroom groaned in despair, but could only resign themselves to their fate and take out their books for the next class.
"Chloe, what happened?" Stella Winters asked hastily, unable to hold back any longer while they waited for the next teacher to arrive.
"I cleared things up. And I also made a bet. The homeroom teacher said that if my total score on the second mock exam is over fifty, she’ll apologize to me in front of the whole school."
"For real?" Stella Winters was so shocked she shot up from her seat, not bothering to lower her voice. The commotion drew the attention of all the other students.
Stella Winters quickly sat back down. "What are you all looking at me for? Is the solution written on my face? Look at the blackboard." Stella recited one of their math teacher’s favorite lines, earning eye-rolls from everyone, but it at least made them look away.
"So you mean the whole thing with the ’puppy love’ photos just got dropped, and you even made a bet with the homeroom teacher?" This time, Stella Winters knew to lower her voice.
"Right. She thinks it’s my fault, that I’m a bad influence on Henry Ford and Evan Shaw."
"Having a homeroom teacher like that is so depressing. I almost want to transfer to another class. Look at the other homeroom teachers—they’re so understanding and always encouraging their students. If a student is willing to try, their motto is to never give up." After sighing, Stella started eating a piece of chocolate again.
"Chloe York, I believe in you. I know you can get a total score of fifty on the second mock exam." Stella’s expression was serious as she patted Chloe’s shoulder with one hand, while the other hand fiercely bit into a piece of chocolate.
