Chapter 26: Chapter 26: A Bet with the Homeroom Teacher

What her classmates were saying made Stella Winters a little worried. The truth was nothing like what had been posted online.

When she arrived at the homeroom teacher’s office, Evan Shaw was just getting there too. The homeroom teachers for both classes were sitting together.

"Do you have any idea what time it is? The college entrance exams are right around the corner, and you still have the nerve to pull something like this? Especially you, Chloe York. You may not care about studying, but other people do. You’re dragging them down, don’t you get it?" The more Mr. Hale looked at Chloe York, the more he disliked her.

When Chloe York was first assigned to his class, he had told the principal he didn’t want her. He already had Stella Winters, and now Chloe York on top of that. Students like them would easily drag down his entire class’s average on the college entrance exams, reflecting poorly on his abilities as a teacher.

"Mr. Hale, that’s not fair. How can you put all the blame on Chloe? If you’re going to reprimand someone, reprimand all three of them. Otherwise, don’t single anyone out." The math teacher, who was circling the group while holding his thermos, was instantly displeased when he heard the homeroom teacher blaming only Chloe York.

He had come to value Chloe York highly, so he couldn’t stand by while the homeroom teacher’s every word, both explicit and implied, placed the blame on her.

"Sir, Chloe York and I are just normal classmates. She came to ask me for the class schedule that day. What you should be investigating is who took those pictures and posted them to the confession wall to deliberately distract us and make us lose focus before the exams." Henry Ford crisply pointed out what needed to be done.

"Chloe York asked you for the class schedule?" ’The homeroom teacher understood each word, but the sentence as a whole felt completely alien.’

"Yes, I was asking the class president for the schedule. If two people can be photographed talking and laughing and it’s called ’a situation,’ then everyone in class is in ’a situation’."

"Chloe York, do you think I don’t know what your grades are like? You, asking the class president for a class schedule? Don’t make me laugh."

"What? Just because my grades are bad, I’m not allowed to try? I can’t ask the class president for the schedule?" Chloe York had been a top student her entire life, and her teachers had always doted on her. This was the first time she had ever encountered a teacher like this. ’Getting ridiculed just for having bad grades and trying to improve?’

"You can try. All your effort will just take you from a 0 to a 1," Mr. Hale said bluntly.

Just as a fight was about to break out, Evan Shaw’s homeroom teacher spoke up. "Mr. Hale, calm down." He then turned to Evan. "Evan Shaw, why don’t you explain what happened. You aren’t even in the same class as these two. How did you get involved?"

Evan Shaw’s homeroom teacher saw him frowning. He couldn’t for the life of him understand why such an outstanding student from his own class would be eating with someone from another class—and Chloe York, of all people.

"I hurt my foot playing ball on the court, and Chloe York was the one who helped me to the nurse’s office. We ran into each other in the cafeteria that day, so we sat down to eat together. It wasn’t just me and Chloe, either. There was another girl with us. We were a group of three. The person who uploaded the photo photoshopped the other girl out." Evan Shaw explained everything clearly.

"See? I told you we should let the students explain. Now that they have, isn’t it all clear? One was just asking for a class schedule, and the other sat down to eat with someone he knew because she’d helped him. And there was even a third person there!" The math teacher, relieved, took a sip of his tea.

"You’re sure another person was photoshopped out?" Evan Shaw’s homeroom teacher looked at him and asked again.

"I’m sure." Evan Shaw glanced at Chloe York, who explained, "That was my deskmate, Stella Winters."

"Alright, I understand. As long as it’s a misunderstanding, that’s fine. Now that things are cleared up, Evan Shaw, you can head back to class." Once he confirmed it was just a misunderstanding, Evan’s homeroom teacher wanted him to leave immediately. He didn’t want him getting involved in the affairs of another class, especially one with such a poor atmosphere.

"Sir, this matter needs to be thoroughly investigated. This was obviously done on purpose to ruin Chloe York’s reputation." Evan Shaw didn’t move to leave. Instead, he insisted that the teachers get to the bottom of it.

"We’ll look into it."

The school bell rang. It was time for class. Mr. Hale glared at Chloe York. "Let me tell you something, Chloe York. I don’t care what you do on your own time, but don’t you dare affect anyone else. Our class’s college acceptance rate is already in the gutter because of you. You’re one bad apple spoiling the whole bunch."

"As a teacher, your job is to educate and nurture students. Is it appropriate for you to be saying things like that?" Chloe York rarely talked back to people, but she felt that her homeroom teacher had just said something no teacher ever should.

Henry Ford secretly tugged on Chloe York’s sleeve, signaling for her to calm down. ’You can’t say things like that!’

The homeroom teacher, who had been about to leave with his book, slammed it down on the desk. "What did you just say? You think you’re the one in the right here? Is that it? If that’s the case, then why were you the one in the pictures? Why not any of the other girls?"

"It’s just because my grades are bad, isn’t it? If it had been one of the top students, would you be talking to them like this?"

"In my classroom, there are no good students or bad students, only obedient ones and disobedient ones. And you? You not only have terrible grades, but you’re also disobedient and a troublemaker. Always scoring a 0 or a 1. You’ve completely disgraced our class." The homeroom teacher unloaded on her, clearly venting all his pent-up frustration with Chloe York in that single moment.

"Even if I’m only scoring 0s and 1s, when a student says they want to start trying, shouldn’t a teacher believe in them and support them? Not try to crush them like this!"

The two of them began to argue fiercely. Evan Shaw and Henry Ford tried to stop Chloe York from saying more, but they couldn’t get a word in edgewise. The moment they touched her, she would shake them off. It was as if she was determined to go head-to-head with the teacher.

"You? The person who scored one point on the first mock exam? You expect me to believe you?" The disgust on the homeroom teacher’s face was plain to see.

Scholar System: [Host, make a bold declaration: state that you will score fifty points or higher in every subject on the next exam. Reward: Wisdom value +5, Memory Value +5.]

’The system’s voice appearing so suddenly was a surprise to Chloe York. She thought quests were always about grinding through practice problems or answering questions in class to get rewards. She never imagined that making a bold declaration could also be a quest.’

"Then what if my scores on the second mock exam go up? What if I can score over fifty points in every single subject?"

Scholar System: [Congratulations, Host, for completing the quest. Reward: Wisdom value +5, Memory Value +5.]

Her words made the teacher who was gathering his textbooks freeze. Another teacher who was about to head out to class stopped in his tracks, and one who had already crossed the threshold instinctively took two steps back into the room.

’What did we just hear? Did Chloe York just say she was going to score over fifty points in every subject?’

"Chloe York, are you joking? These are exam scores we’re talking about! They’re the result of long-term, cumulative effort. They’re not just numbers you can pull out of thin air by flapping your gums!"

"I’m asking you what happens if my scores for the second mock exam come out, and every single one of them is over fifty!" Chloe York repeated, her voice full of defiance.
