Three Systems Made the Fake Heiress Unstoppable

Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Saving the Hunted Man

Just then, Chloe York sighed softly, a look of feigned helplessness in her eyes. "Brooke, I know you had a difficult upbringing and weren’t taught any manners, so you speak without thinking. I don’t blame you."

Her tone shifted as she glanced at the surrounding classmates, her voice ringing a little clearer. "You’ve all seen him. The person who’s always driven me to and from school has been a middle-aged chauffeur. What respectable family would hire a young man for that job? Brooke, I know you can’t stand that I have a chauffeur, but there’s no need to stoop to this level and spread such baseless rumors!"

Once Chloe York said this, everyone instantly understood. That’s right—Chloe York had always been picked up and dropped off by her family’s chauffeur, and he was an older man.

"Brooke, that’s on you. He’s your family’s chauffeur. Haven’t you been back for a while? How could you not know?"

"Yeah, and I remember you were the one who refused to ride in the car!"

With just a few sentences, Chloe York had turned the tide of opinion.

Brooke York had just shot herself in the foot. She’d forgotten that when she first returned, she had insisted on walking home every day to show how sensible and unspoiled she was. Her classmates had even praised her for being considerate and down-to-earth.

Meanwhile, Chloe had always been the one to take the car. It wasn’t until last week, during a heavy downpour, that Brooke rode in it once—and had been taking it ever since.

But her classmates had only seen her take the car a few times, so they all still assumed it was Chloe York, not Brooke York, who rode in it.

"The older man I was talking about wasn’t the family chauffeur! The chauffeur always drives me home," Brooke York explained anxiously. "You were the one who didn’t come home until the middle of the night yesterday, and a strange man ended up bringing you back!" But her classmates were no longer listening.

They’d had a full day of classes, on top of an evening self-study session, and were all exhausted. They just wanted to hurry home and rest.

They had actually thought there was some major gossip to hear, but it was just the newly-returned girl, who apparently didn’t know any better, trying to twist the truth.

The classmates quickly dispersed, and Chloe York finished packing her things to leave as well.

"Chloe York, you must be so proud of yourself!"

"What do I have to be proud of?"

"What do you have to be proud of? Don’t play dumb. So what if you’ve beaten me twice? So what if you saved that old hag from the Prescott Family? I’m telling you, you’ll never be better than me! I am the daughter of the York Family. I’ll get into a top university, I’ll join the York Group and become the next president, and you? You’re only fit to rot in a gutter."

The more Brooke York spoke, the more twisted her expression became. She was so furious because she felt more and more threatened by Chloe York.

The second mock exam was next month. For some reason, Brooke York had a feeling that Chloe York’s score would be very high this time, so she had to ruin her before then.

Looking at the seemingly frenzied Brooke York, Chloe York wondered, ’Is a person like this really fit to be the female lead?’

Taking a deep breath, Chloe York spoke in a calm tone, enunciating every word clearly. "Brooke York, do I need to remind you? It was your mother, Alice Cole, who switched the babies. She’s the one who caused this entire mess. Not my parents, and certainly not me. You have no right to blame everything on me. Do you understand?"

"So what if Alice Cole was the one who made the mistake? You’re the one who enjoyed my life for over a decade—the life of a wealthy heiress!" Brooke York roared, her voice echoing chillingly in the vast, empty classroom.

’There’s no getting through to her!’

"Chloe York, I won’t let you have an easy time. Just you wait." Spitting out the threat, Brooke York spun around and walked away, her pace quickening. It seemed she intended to defy Miles York’s words and leave Chloe York behind.

Chloe didn’t care whether she could get a ride home or not. After all, she planned to complete the mission issued by the Physical System tonight. Otherwise, it would keep nagging at her, and she wouldn’t feel right.

Once she finished packing, she turned off the classroom lights and slowly made her way downstairs.

When she reached the school gate, she glanced back and saw that the lights were still on in a couple of classrooms. It seemed some people were still studying.

She crouched down, tightened her shoelaces, stood up, and broke into a run.

As she ran, Chloe York also reviewed her English vocabulary. She had more or less memorized the words during the evening study session, so running was the perfect opportunity to solidify them in her memory.

As Chloe York was running, she heard someone calling her name. She stopped and turned to see Evan Shaw.

"You’re running too?" Chloe York asked, surprised to see Evan Shaw jogging up to her.

Evan Shaw stopped in front of Chloe York. "I wasn’t planning on running, but I saw you out here alone so late at night. I was worried you might not be safe, so I figured I’d run with you."

Evan Shaw had been in his car when he unexpectedly spotted Chloe York running along the road.

Chloe York found this amusing. "You don’t have to do that. This whole route is busy with people, and I stick to the main roads, not the side streets. It’s not dangerous."

"I know, but I live in Avallon, too."

"You live in Avallon, too?"

"Mhm, I found out by chance. It seems you’re over in the East District, though. I’m in the North District."

"Right, I’m in the East District. And you’re in the North District? What a coincidence!"

"It is! So doesn’t that make it the perfect occasion for us to run together tonight?"

’It’s a nice coincidence, but I’m only running to complete a mission for the Physical System. I get a reward for this; Evan Shaw doesn’t. There’s no reason for him to run with me.’

"I’m running because I’ve felt a bit weak recently," Chloe York explained tactfully. "I’m worried about my immune system, so I need to get more exercise."

"That’s okay. I’ve been studying all day and could use the chance to unwind. Besides, I need to boost my immune system, too!"

"Oh, really? Well, alright then!"

Since Evan Shaw put it that way, there was nothing more she could say. She recalled how, back in high school, she would sometimes make time to run and exercise to build up her immunity.

"Just running is a bit boring. How about we make it a race?"

"Okay!"

Not far behind them, a car followed at a leisurely pace, keeping a steady distance. The driver sighed. "Kids these days. They learn so young. He has a perfectly good car to ride in, but he’d rather run home with a girl."

"He’s still too young, I suppose. He should have just offered the girl a ride!"

Evan Shaw was a bit faster, and Chloe York soon fell a few steps behind him.

Godly Rich System: [Host, look at the alley on your right. There’s an injured man being hunted. Save him immediately. Reward: 3,000 yuan.]

Following the system’s directions, she looked toward an alley about 300 meters to her right. Sure enough, a man was staggering out, supporting himself against the wall.

’Wait a minute. He’s being hunted, and I’m supposed to save him?’
