Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Brooke York Slanders Chloe York

Brooke York had been waiting for Ethan Prescott to get angry, to voice his disappointment in Chloe York. But he just stared at her, his deep eyes swirling with an emotion she couldn’t quite decipher. It made her skin crawl. "Ethan, why aren’t you saying anything? Are you too angry?"

"Couldn’t the older man in the car have been a classmate’s family driver, sent to take her home?"

"Chloe’s only friends are you and her deskmate. Your driver already brought you, and her deskmate is always picked up by her father. That old man was a complete stranger, and he was acting awfully familiar with Chloe!"

"I have to go." With that, Ethan Prescott turned and walked away. He needed to be alone. ’Something must be wrong with my judgment,’ he thought. ’How could Brooke York be the type of person to ruin another girl’s reputation based on pure speculation? She’s a girl herself!’

Seeing Ethan Prescott walk off in a daze, as if he’d lost his soul, Brooke York assumed it was because he and Chloe had grown up together. He just couldn’t immediately accept that his childhood friend had become so depraved. A smirk played on her lips. ’Chloe York, there’s no way you can clear your name this time.’

When she got to the classroom, Chloe York glanced around and saw that there wasn’t a full class schedule posted on the walls or the blackboard.

After sitting down, she asked Stella Winters, "Stella, do you have a copy of the class schedule?"

Stella Winters, currently cracking sunflower seeds, slowly turned to look at Chloe. Her expression was a little odd. "What on earth gave you the confidence to think that a person like me would have a class schedule?"

’Fair point,’ Chloe thought. ’Why did I even think to ask Stella? Neither she nor the previous owner of this body would have ever given the schedule a second glance, let alone memorize it.’

Just then, Stella Winters leaned closer to Chloe. "I’ll tell you who definitely has a complete schedule!"

"Who?"

"The class monitor, Henry Ford!" After speaking, Stella gave a sly grin and went back to cracking her sunflower seeds with renewed vigor. If you listened closely, you could even make out a rhythm.

It seemed asking Henry was her only option. Chloe stood up and walked toward him, with Stella’s sly laughter following her.

"Class Monitor."

Henry Ford was in the middle of a practice test. He looked up at the sound of Chloe York’s voice and saw her standing there.

"Chloe, what’s up?"

"Class Monitor, do you have the class schedule? I’d like to make a copy."

"I do. Let me find it for you."

"Okay."

Henry Ford rummaged through the books on his desk and found it in a moment. He handed it to Chloe. "Here you go."

She took it with a smile. "Thanks, Class Monitor."

"You’re welcome." Henry returned her smile.

Seeing the two of them smiling at each other, Brooke York secretly took out her phone and snapped a picture.

After taking the shot, Brooke York looked at the image on her phone. ’This picture,’ she thought, ’will definitely come in handy later.’

The Scholar System didn’t issue any new tasks all day. ’But that makes sense,’ she mused. ’If it gave me tasks every day and I completed them all, I’d become a genius overnight. It can’t be that easy!’

Even though the system hadn’t issued any new tasks, she didn’t slack off. Whenever she had free time, she ground out practice problems from test papers and workbooks. She also paid close attention in class and could feel herself becoming able to solve many more questions.

After a full day of classes, they still had an evening self-study session. Chloe York and Stella Winters went to the cafeteria to grab dinner together.

"Campus Prince Shaw, fancy meeting you here! We seem to run into you every time we eat!" Stella exclaimed. They had just gotten their food and were looking for a table when they saw Evan Shaw, who was also holding a tray and searching for a seat.

Stella was quite surprised. She had never once run into Evan Shaw in the cafeteria before, but now she’d seen him the last two times she came with Chloe.

’She couldn’t help but suspect he was here for a certain someone!’

"We have evening self-study, so I figured I’d eat in the cafeteria. Otherwise, I won’t have the energy to study and will just doze off," Evan Shaw said in a teasing tone.

"Then let’s all sit together!" Stella took the initiative, sitting down at a table and inviting Evan to join them.

"Okay." Evan sat down across from them. Chloe sat next to Stella, which put her directly opposite Evan.

First and second-year students didn’t have evening self-study, only the third-years did. Many students just brought snacks to eat in the classroom, so the cafeteria wasn’t very crowded.

The quiet atmosphere made the meal feel surprisingly pleasant.

No one at the table spoke, all eating in silence. Stella, however, kept sneaking glances at the other two, and the more she watched, the more she felt they were a perfect match.

’Wait, but what about the class monitor, Henry Ford?’ Stella was suddenly conflicted. ’Who’s better, Henry or Evan?’

Not far away, Brooke York saw the three of them eating together. She picked up her phone, opened the camera, and snapped a photo.

"Brooke, what are you taking a picture of?" Clara Bell, who had been eating with her head down, looked up just in time to see Brooke putting her phone away as if she’d just taken a photo.

"Nothing." Brooke placed her phone face-down on the table and went back to her food, a plan already forming in her mind.

After dinner, Chloe said goodbye to Evan and returned to the classroom. She went back to her books, reviewing the material from that day’s classes. The only sound in the room was the occasional turning of a page.

For a moment, Chloe felt as if she wasn’t in the world of a novel at all, but back in the real world—back in high school, when everyone would burn the midnight oil, grinding out practice problems to prepare for the college entrance exams.

Before she knew it, it was already 9:00 PM. Students began to pack up their things, getting ready to leave.

"Chloe, I’m heading out! See you tomorrow!" Stella didn’t even need to pack her bag; the moment the clock struck nine, she was ready to bolt.

"See you tomorrow." Chloe was almost done packing her books when a shadow fell over her desk. She looked up, not missing the calculating glint that flashed in Brooke York’s eyes.

"Sister, let’s walk home together. You shouldn’t let strange, random ’uncles’ drive you home. It’ll make Mom and Dad worry."

The students who had been about to leave stopped in their tracks. Those who were still packing their bags froze, staring over at them as if they’d just heard some major gossip.

"No way, did I hear that right? Chloe York is having some old guy drive her home?"

"Is she already trying to secure her future? But why would she go about it like *that*?"

"I think I know why she’s been studying so hard. She probably wants to get into a good university so she can be with her so-called ’uncle’ as a college student."

"Why a college student specifically?"

"Maybe her ’uncle’ has a thing for college girls!"

The students’ speculation grew more and more outrageous, which was exactly the effect Brooke York wanted. By making Chloe angry and destroying her reputation, she’d ruin any motivation Chloe had to study. How could Chloe possibly compete with her then?

"You guys, don’t talk about Chloe like that. I’m sure she’s not that kind of person; she’s just too trusting." Brooke York offered a fake defense, but her explanation was worse than saying nothing at all.
