Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Chloe York’s Smackdown

Some students subconsciously started writing in their notebooks, then suddenly realized Chloe York had said, "I don’t want to."

"Why?" The math teacher was confused. ’Just a moment ago, so many people doubted her. If she let it go and explained the solution, her classmates’ perception of her would change. They would be grateful, and her relationship with them would improve.’

"Because I think, given their intellect, it’s better for them to stick with Brooke York’s solution method. Mine isn’t suitable for them."

’I’m no saint. After the way they treated me, they still expect me to explain the solution? What a joke.’

"Chloe York, what do you mean by that? Are you looking down on us?!" The students instantly erupted at Chloe’s words, slamming their desks as they shot to their feet.

"It’s just one problem, and you’re already this full of yourself? Have you forgotten your track record of scoring either zero or one point?"

"That’s right. I am looking down on you. So what?"

"Chloe, are you refusing to explain because everyone believed me instead of you? I can apologize to you. I just hope you’ll reconsider and explain it for our classmates."

"Brooke, you don’t have to apologize to her. It’s just one problem. We don’t care about her method."

"That’s right, Brooke. We’ll just use your method for this problem. So what if we learn hers? It’s not like this exact question is guaranteed to be on the college entrance exam."

The classmates tried to persuade Brooke, insisting she shouldn’t apologize for anything, which only made Chloe disdain them further.

"Alright, that’s enough arguing," the math teacher spoke up. "You all did look down on Chloe earlier, assuming she couldn’t solve it. She came up with her own method, and if she’s unwilling to share it, you can’t force her." The students could only sit back down, though the defiant looks on their faces made it clear they weren’t convinced.

"I’m so happy for you for becoming so brilliant, Chloe. Maybe we’ll even end up at the same university!" Even though Brooke was furious inside, she still put on a show of being genuinely happy for Chloe.

"That’s right, the same university. Dad would be so proud, wouldn’t he? Maybe we could even join the company together as his assistants. Wouldn’t that make you even happier, *sister*?"

Brooke’s smile finally faltered at Chloe’s words. She turned and stepped down from the platform.

Seeing Brooke get angry put Chloe in a great mood. She gave the math teacher a nod. "I’ll head back to my seat now, sir."

"Of course, of course." The math teacher now looked at Chloe with admiration. It had been a long time since he’d encountered a student like her.

"Chloe, you were amazing! You really showed them!" Stella Winters gave Chloe two thumbs up as she returned to her seat.

"Thanks for earlier." ’In my past life, I was too caught up in the rat race. I pushed myself harder and harder, going further and further, until I had no friends left.’

’People were either jealous or just couldn’t handle how intense I was. Stella was the only one who supported me and believed in me through all that grinding.’

"Oh, come on. Do we really need to say ’thank you’ to each other? You’re making us sound like strangers!"

’Actually, at first, Chloe had considered asking Stella to grind with her, but Stella’s family was wealthy and would just send her abroad to get a fancy degree anyway.’

’Besides, if Stella tried to keep up with her, she didn’t have a system. She might burn out, just like I did in my past life. The workload I give myself is too intense; Stella doesn’t need to put herself through that kind of exhaustion.’

"Stella, if you ever need help with anything, just ask. As long as I’m able to, I’ll definitely help you." Chloe extended her hand.

Seeing Chloe’s serious expression, Stella grew serious as well. She wiped her hands, brushing off any lingering potato chip grease, and took Chloe’s offered hand. "Deal."

For the rest of the class, Chloe listened attentively and took notes.

The math teacher’s gaze kept unintentionally drifting toward her. It was clear he was starting to hold her in high regard.

Even during the break, Chloe was still reviewing her notes and making annotations. ’This body really isn’t a natural academic like my old one was. So even with the system’s help, I still have to solidify my knowledge, read more, and drill through practice problems.’

"Here, have some water."

A full water bottle was placed on her desk. Stella had gone to get water for Chloe the moment class ended.

"Thanks." Chloe unscrewed the cap and took a drink, her eyes never leaving the problem she was working on.

"Brooke, what’s with Chloe? Why is she suddenly so diligent?" Clara Bell felt like she didn’t even recognize Chloe anymore. She never thought the words "studying hard" could ever be used to describe her.

"How should I know?" Having been shown up by Chloe in front of the entire class twice in a row, Brooke was in a foul mood. She was sick of even hearing Chloe’s name.

’I need to work even harder now. If Chloe actually gets into a good university, I won’t have any advantage left. I have to be the top scorer on the college entrance exam.’

Seeing Brooke diligently working on math problems, Clara Bell didn’t dare say another word. She could only complain inwardly. ’What’s with the attitude? So what if she’s the York Family’s real daughter? That doesn’t change the fact she grew up poor.’

"Chloe York."

Chloe looked up from her calculations and saw the class monitor, Henry Ford. "Class Monitor, can I help you with something?"

"Would you be interested in studying together?"

"Of course." ’Everyone has their strong suits. Studying with a classmate to complement each other’s skills would be a big help.’

"Then it’s settled. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask me. And of course, if you have a better way of looking at things, you can tell me as well."

"Alright."

Henry Ford nodded and walked away without lingering.

"Whoa, the class monitor is usually so cold to everyone. For him to suddenly come over and say that... don’t tell me he fell for you after watching you solve that problem so masterfully!" Stella said, a piece of chocolate stuck to her tooth making her look like she had a gap in her smile.

Chloe couldn’t help but poke Stella’s head. "Is that all you think about all day, besides food? We’re high school students. We need to focus on studying. We can think about dating when we get to college, at least!"

"True! But the class monitor is pretty cute. It’s not guaranteed we’ll find his type in college!"

After their afternoon classes, everyone began packing up to go home. The students at this high school didn’t live in dorms, because the author didn’t want to write a dormitory plotline.

Evening self-study was only scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and these sessions were intended to give everyone a chance for group discussions.

After packing her things and saying goodbye to Stella, Chloe prepared to run home. She would take the bus after completing her running task.

Meanwhile, Brooke, afraid that Chloe would get a ride and get home earlier to study, rushed out of school faster than anyone.

Just as she reached the school gate and was about to start her run, a voice stopped her.

"Chloe York."

She turned to see Ethan Prescott and frowned. "What do you want?"
