Chapter 13: Chapter 13: She Is Not Willing

Ignoring them, she raised her hand and wrote the first step on the blackboard.

When they saw Chloe York write out the first step, small gasps of surprise rippled through the classroom.

"Whoa, she actually knows it!"

"There’s nothing wrong with that first step!"

"She can’t actually be able to solve it, can she? If she does, we’re all going to look like idiots. I can’t even solve it yet... How embarrassing!"

Meanwhile, Brooke York had also written down the first step and quickly moved on to the second. In contrast, Chloe York, who had stopped after just one step, looked like she was already stumped.

Seeing Chloe York stop after only one step with no follow-up, the students started mocking her again.

"You scared me for a second. Turns out it was all thunder and no rain."

"I told you she couldn’t do it. With a brain like hers? Heh."

"Still, not bad. She managed to get the first step!"

In contrast, Brooke York was already on the second step, methodically writing out her solution.

The math teacher sighed and walked over to Brooke York’s side to watch her solve the problem. Clearly, he’d lost faith in Chloe York as well.

Chloe York paid no mind to the students’ chatter or the teacher’s disbelief. She was just waiting for the system to give her the insight she needed.

Suddenly, it was as if she knew exactly how to solve it. The steps of the solution became crystal clear in her mind. ’Looks like the Scholar System is kicking in.’

She started writing on the blackboard again. Soon, both her and Brooke York’s sections were filled with a series of calculations.

But the students all chose to watch Brooke York, since they thought the things Chloe York was writing on the blackboard were just gibberish.

In the end, Chloe York was the first to put down her chalk. Brooke York continued writing for a little while longer before she stopped. Chloe’s solution was only half the length of Brooke’s, making it look like she’d gotten stuck midway and couldn’t finish.

After watching Brooke York’s entire process, the math teacher nodded in appreciation. "Brooke York’s solution is completely correct, and your reasoning is clear and logical. Well done."

"Thank you for the praise, sir. But it’s really thanks to your excellent teaching. I definitely couldn’t have done it otherwise." Brooke York replied politely, attributing part of the credit to the math teacher.

The math teacher just smiled at Brooke York’s words. ’She already knows how to play these games at such a young age,’ he thought.

"I knew Brooke York could solve it."

"Yeah, and to get such high praise from the math teacher."

Hearing the other students praise Brooke York, Stella Winters, not to be outdone, piped up, "What’s the rush? Chloe solved it too, didn’t she?"

Stella Winters’s comment was met with a wave of laughter.

"Haha, Stella Winters, are you kidding me? Comparing Chloe York’s work to Brooke’s? Are you all right?"

"Stella Winters, we know you’re good friends with Chloe York, but you don’t have to blindly sing her praises like this! Why bring all this trouble on yourself?"

"Exactly! And have you even seen Chloe York’s work? You can tell just by looking that it’s not finished. The teacher said Brooke’s solution is correct, which means she used the right method. Chloe’s, which is only half as long, has to be wrong!"

"Who says? Her final answer is the same as Brooke York’s, isn’t it?"

Stella Winters didn’t really understand it either. All she knew was that Chloe’s steps were much shorter, and her final answer was the same as Brooke York’s. To her, that meant Chloe’s solution was better.

’Isn’t simpler better when it comes to math problems?’

"So what if the answer is the same? The process matters in math, you know. If the process is wrong, a correct final answer is useless."

"Sir, why don’t you take a look at Chloe York’s solution!"

Stella Winters didn’t argue with them. Instead, she stood up and addressed the math teacher directly.

The math teacher didn’t really want to look at Chloe York’s work. After all, Brooke York had already solved it, and he’d seen Chloe get stuck after the first step. He was worried she had only raised her hand because she really needed to use the restroom.

He’d even been about to tell Chloe she could go to the restroom if she needed to, and then he would have just casually erased the board.

Seeing the teacher’s reluctance, Chloe York spoke up. "Sir, it won’t take long to look."

At her words, the math teacher looked up at Chloe York. He saw her determined gaze and the confident smile playing on her lips. He nodded, walked over to her side of the board, and looked at her solution. Suddenly, he leaned in closer, as if he couldn’t quite see it clearly.

He turned, took off his glasses, and began wiping them with his dedicated cloth. Once they were clean, he put them back on and looked again, this time with intense focus.

The students below were confused by the teacher’s serious expression.

"Can the teacher not understand what Chloe York wrote?"

"I think Chloe York’s method is better than Brooke’s," Henry Ford suddenly said.

"Class President, what are you talking about?" Clara Bell was instantly displeased when she heard Henry Ford.

Henry Ford didn’t say anything else, his eyes fixed on the steps Chloe York had written.

No one else paid much attention to what Henry Ford said. He had been the judge for the classical poetry recitation last time, when Chloe York had surprisingly won. Now he was saying her solution was better than Brooke York’s. They had already written him off as being on Chloe York’s side.

"Sir, what about Chloe York’s solution? Is it complete nonsense?" Clara Bell asked, growing impatient.

"No, it’s not nonsense at all. It’s brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! I never would have thought to solve it this way. This method is so simple and easy to understand, so much more efficient! This is the most elegant solution."

The math teacher’s words left the students utterly shocked.

"Sir, are you sure Chloe York’s method and answer are correct?" Brooke York asked again, unable to believe it. She had spent two days figuring out how to solve this exact type of problem. ’How could a dimwit like Chloe York possibly know how? And her solution is even better than mine?’

"I am one hundred percent certain. Even I never thought of this method. For a student like Chloe York to come up with this approach... she’s a true talent!"

Hearing the word "talent," Brooke York stumbled back two steps in disbelief. ’Chloe York actually solved it, and with the simplest, fastest method? How did she suddenly get so smart?’

Her suspicious gaze fell on Chloe York. ’She’s changed so much these past few days. Why?’

Feeling Brooke York’s stare, Chloe York met it without flinching, a smug smile spreading across her face.

That smile made Brooke York’s blood boil; she felt like Chloe York was mocking her.

"Chloe, would you be willing to explain your solution? That way, the other students can learn from it as well," the math teacher said, his voice full of excitement.

The same students who had been mocking Chloe York just moments before heard the teacher’s request and immediately took out their pens and notebooks, ready to take notes as soon as she started speaking.

But who would have thought that Chloe York would simply reply, "I’m not willing."
