Chapter 29: The Calm Before the Storm
Chapter 29: The Calm Before the Storm
The war room fell silent as Dmitri’s words hung in the air. Anya studied the faces around the table, seeing the weight of responsibility etched into each one. These were Dmitri’s most trusted lieutenants, men and women who had bled for the Bratva, who had built their lives around loyalty to the Thorn.
She had earned her place among them. The thought still felt foreign, like a dream she might wake from at any moment.
Dmitri’s hand found hers beneath the table, his thumb tracing circles on her palm. The gesture was small, almost unconscious, but it grounded her. Reminded her that this was real. That she was real.
"We have Valeria’s information," Dmitri continued, his voice cutting through the silence. "But the Syndicate council is already aware of her capture. They will be moving to consolidate their power, to protect their assets."
One of the lieutenants, a scarred man named Ivan, leaned forward. "Then we hit them now. While they are still reeling from the loss of the Carpathian facility."
Dmitri shook his head. "No. They will be expecting that. They will have fortified their positions, set traps. We need to be smarter."
Anya spoke up, her voice steady despite the flutter in her chest. "What if we do not hit them directly? What if we attack their supply lines instead?"
All eyes turned to her. She forced herself to continue.
"The Syndicate relies on Krov to maintain their power. Without it, their soldiers are just ordinary men. If we can disrupt their production, their distribution, we can weaken them without ever stepping foot in their strongholds."
Dmitri’s silver eyes gleamed with approval. "Anya is right. The Syndicate’s greatest strength is also their greatest weakness. They have become dependent on the drug. Take that away, and they will crumble."
Ivan frowned. "Easier said than done. Their production facilities are spread across three continents. We do not have the resources to hit all of them."
"Then we do not hit all of them." Anya moved to the holographic display, pulling up a map of known Syndicate facilities. "We hit the most critical ones. The hubs that supply the others. Cut off the head, and the body dies."
She touched a location in Eastern Europe. "This facility produces the raw components for Krov. Without it, the other facilities cannot manufacture the finished product."
Dmitri rose from his seat, moving to stand beside her. His presence was a warm weight at her back, his voice a low rumble in her ear.
"Anya will lead the assault on this facility," he announced. "I will handle the secondary targets."
The room erupted in murmurs. Anya felt a spike of panic, but she forced it down. ’He trusts me. I cannot let him down.’
"Are you sure about this?" she asked quietly, turning to face him.
Dmitri’s expression was unreadable. "I have never been more sure of anything. You are ready, Anya. You have proven yourself time and again."
She wanted to argue, to tell him she was not ready, that she was still the frightened girl he had bought at auction. But the words would not come.
Because she was not that girl anymore.
The planning took days. Anya threw herself into it with a ferocity that surprised even her. She studied the facility’s schematics until she knew every corridor, every ventilation shaft, every weak point in their defenses.
Dmitri watched her from across the war room, his silver eyes tracking her movements. There was pride in his gaze, and something deeper. Something that made her heart skip.
That night, they retreated to their quarters. The fire crackled in the hearth, casting warm shadows across the room. Anya stood by the window, her reflection ghostly in the glass.
Dmitri came up behind her, his arms wrapping around her waist. "You are worried," he said. It was not a question.
She leaned into his embrace, drawing comfort from his warmth. "What if I fail? What if I am not strong enough?"
He turned her to face him, his hands cupping her cheeks. "Listen to me. You are the strongest person I have ever known. You survived the Syndicate. You survived Valeria. You survived me."
His lips curved into a wry smile. "And I am not easy to survive."
Anya laughed despite herself, the tension in her shoulders easing. "You are impossible."
"I am yours." He kissed her forehead, his lips lingering. "And you are mine. Whatever happens, we face it together."
She reached up, her fingers tangling in his hair. "I love you, Dmitri. I do not say it enough."
He pulled back, his silver eyes burning with intensity. "Say it again."
"I love you."
"Again."
"I love you." She smiled, the words coming easier each time. "I love you, I love you, I love you."
He kissed her, swallowing the last of her words. His mouth was hungry, demanding, a claiming that left no doubt about his feelings.
They stumbled toward the bed, shedding clothes in a frenzy of desperate need. Dmitri laid her down on the silk sheets, his body covering hers.
"I need you," he growled, his lips trailing down her neck. "I need to feel you. To remind myself you are real."
Anya arched into his touch, her fingers digging into his shoulders. "I am here. I am not going anywhere."
He positioned himself at her entrance, the head of his cock pressing against her slick folds. "Look at me."
She obeyed, her crimson eyes meeting his silver gaze.
"You are everything," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "Everything I never knew I needed."
He pushed inside her, filling her completely. Anya cried out, her back arching off the bed. Dmitri groaned, his forehead dropping to rest against hers.
"So perfect," he murmured. "You were made for me."
He began to move, slow and deep, each thrust sending waves of pleasure through her body. Anya wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper.
"Harder," she gasped. "I need more."
Dmitri obliged, his pace quickening. The bed creaked beneath them, the sounds of their passion filling the room. He drove into her with relentless intensity, his hands gripping her hips hard enough to leave bruises.
Anya met him thrust for thrust, her nails raking down his back. The pressure built in her core, pleasure coiling tighter and tighter.
"I am close," she moaned. "Dmitri, please..."
"Come for me," he commanded. "Come on my cock. Show me what is mine."
His words pushed her over the edge. Anya shattered, her orgasm crashing through her like a wave. She cried out his name, her body clenching around him.
Dmitri followed moments later, spilling inside her with a guttural roar. His hips pumped a few more times before he collapsed against her, his weight pressing her into the mattress.
They lay there, panting, their bodies slick with sweat. Dmitri’s heart pounded against her chest, a rhythm that matched her own.
"I love you," he said, the words muffled against her neck. "I will never let anyone take you from me again."
Anya held him close, her fingers stroking through his hair. "I know. I trust you."
The morning of the assault dawned cold and gray. Anya stood in the hangar, her tactical gear fitting like a second skin. Dmitri was beside her, his expression grim.
"Remember the plan," he said, his voice low. "In and out. Do not engage unless you have to."
She nodded, her heart pounding. "I remember."
He pulled her into a fierce embrace, his lips finding hers in a kiss that was equal parts passion and desperation. "Come back to me," he murmured against her mouth. "Promise me."
"I promise." She pulled back, forcing a smile. "I have too much to live for to die now."
Dmitri’s eyes searched her face, looking for any sign of doubt. Finding none, he released her.
"Go," he said. "I will see you on the other side."
Anya boarded the transport helicopter, her team falling in behind her. As the blades began to turn, she looked out the window at Dmitri. He stood alone in the hangar, his silver eyes fixed on her.
’I will come back. I will always come back to you.’
The flight to the Syndicate facility was long and tense. Anya reviewed the schematics one last time, committing every detail to memory.
"The facility is protected by a perimeter fence and motion sensors," she said, addressing her team. "We will breach from the east side, where the terrain provides natural cover."
One of the soldiers, a woman named Katya, nodded. "And the guards?"
"Twenty on active duty, with another twenty on standby. We need to take them out quickly and quietly." Anya’s voice was steady, belying the storm of nerves in her chest. "No alarms. No survivors. We are ghosts."
The helicopter touched down in a clearing two klicks from the facility. Anya led her team through the forest, their movements silent and coordinated. The snow muffled their footsteps, the cold air biting at their exposed skin.
They reached the perimeter fence without incident. Anya signaled for the team to halt while she examined the barrier.
"Electrified," she murmured, her enhanced senses picking up the faint hum. "But there is a gap here where the current is weaker."
She pulled a pair of wire cutters from her belt and snipped through the fence. The metal parted with a soft groan, creating a space just wide enough for them to slip through.
One by one, they entered the facility grounds. Anya led them toward the main building, her heart pounding in her ears.
’Stay focused. Stay alive.’
They encountered their first guard near the service entrance. Anya moved before he could react, her knife finding his throat in a single, fluid motion. She caught his body as it fell, lowering it silently to the ground.
Katya gave her a look of approval. "Nice work."
Anya wiped the blade clean on the guard’s uniform. "Stay sharp. We are not done yet."
The interior of the facility was cold and industrial, all sterile white walls and harsh fluorescent lighting. Anya’s team moved through the corridors like wraiths, taking down guards with brutal efficiency.
They reached the production floor, a massive chamber filled with vats of chemicals and gleaming machinery. This was the heart of the Syndicate’s Krov operation. Without it, their entire supply chain would collapse.
Anya pulled the explosive charges from her pack. "Set the charges on the main vats. We need to destroy everything."
Her team scattered, working quickly to place the explosives. Anya moved to the control console, pulling out a data drive.
’While we are here, we might as well take everything they have.’
She plugged the drive into the console, initiating a download of the facility’s data. Files scrolled across the screen, too fast to read. She did not need to read them. She just needed to take them.
A warning blared through the facility. Red lights began to flash.
[INTRUDER ALERT. LEVEL THREE CONTAINMENT BREACH.]
"Move!" Anya shouted. "We have been compromised!"
Her team converged on her position, guns raised. They ran for the exit, the explosive charges ticking down behind them.
Guards poured into the corridor ahead of them, weapons blazing. Anya dove behind a metal crate, returning fire. Her shots were precise, taking down two guards before they could find cover.
"We need to get to the extraction point!" Katya yelled over the gunfire.
Anya nodded, pulling a smoke grenade from her belt. She pulled the pin and tossed it into the corridor. Thick smoke filled the space, providing cover for their retreat.
They ran through the smoke, bullets whizzing past them. Anya’s lungs burned, her legs screaming with exertion. But she did not stop. Could not stop.
They burst through the service entrance and into the snow. The explosion came a moment later, a massive fireball that consumed the facility behind them. The shockwave knocked them off their feet, sending them tumbling across the ground.
Anya lay in the snow, gasping for breath. Above her, the night sky was lit by the flames of destruction.
’We did it. We actually did it.’
She pushed herself to her feet, her body aching but alive. Her team was scattered around her, but they were all moving. All breathing.
Katya staggered over to her, a grin splitting her face. "That was insane."
Anya grinned back, the adrenaline still pumping through her veins. "It was perfect."
The extraction helicopter arrived minutes later. Anya climbed aboard, her body trembling with exhaustion. She collapsed into a seat, her eyes closing as the blades began to turn.
She did not open them again until they landed back at the Moscow safe house. Dmitri was waiting on the tarmac, his silver eyes blazing with a mixture of relief and pride.
He crossed to her in three long strides and pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest. "You are alive."
"I told you I would come back." She wrapped her arms around him, breathing in his familiar scent. "I always keep my promises."
He kissed her then, fierce and possessive, not caring that his men were watching. When he finally pulled back, his eyes were bright with unshed tears.
"Do you have any idea how worried I was?" he demanded, his voice rough. "Every second you were gone, I was terrified."
Anya cupped his face, her thumbs brushing his cheekbones. "I am here. I am safe. That is all that matters."
He leaned into her touch, his eyes closing. "I love you, Anya. I do not think I could survive losing you."
"You will never have to." She kissed him softly. "We are going to win this war. Together."
That night, they celebrated. The safe house was filled with laughter and music, the tension of the past weeks finally released. Anya stood in the corner, a glass of champagne in her hand, watching Dmitri work the room.
He was magnificent. Tall and commanding, every inch the Pakhan. But when his eyes found hers, there was a softness there that he showed no one else.
He crossed to her, his hand finding her waist. "Are you enjoying yourself?"
She smiled, leaning into him. "I am enjoying watching you."
His lips curved into a wicked grin. "I can think of better ways to celebrate."
He took her hand and led her away from the crowd, up the stairs to their private quarters. The moment the door closed behind them, he had her pressed against the wall.
"I have been thinking about this all night," he growled, his lips trailing down her neck. "About having you alone. About making you scream my name."
Anya moaned, her fingers tangling in his hair. "Then stop thinking and do something."
He lifted her effortlessly, carrying her to the bed. He laid her down on the silk sheets, his body covering hers.
"Tonight," he said, his voice low and intense, "I am going to worship every inch of you."
True to his word, he took his time. His lips traced a path down her body, kissing and licking and nipping at every sensitive spot. He worshipped her breasts, her stomach, the sensitive curve of her hip. He spread her thighs and devoured her, his tongue dancing across her clit until she came with a cry.
Then he rose above her, his silver eyes burning with desire. "Ready for more?"
Anya nodded, her body trembling with anticipation. He pushed inside her, slow and deep, filling her completely.
They moved together in a rhythm that felt like a prayer. Dmitri’s hands roamed her body, claiming every inch. Anya arched into his touch, her moans swallowed by his kisses.
When they came, it was together, a simultaneous explosion of pleasure that left them breathless and trembling.
Afterward, they lay tangled in each other’s arms. The fire crackled in the hearth, casting warm shadows across the room.
"We are going to win," Anya said softly. "I can feel it."
Dmitri kissed her forehead. "I know. Because we have something the Syndicate does not."
"What is that?"
He smiled, his silver eyes shining with love. "Each other."
The next morning, Anya woke to find Dmitri already dressed, his expression focused as he studied a tablet. He looked up when she stirred, his lips curving into a smile.
"Good morning, beautiful."
She stretched, the silk sheets sliding against her skin. "Good morning. What are you looking at?"
"The data you extracted from the facility. It is invaluable." He crossed to the bed, sitting beside her. "We know where the Syndicate council will be meeting next month. And we know how to get to them."
Anya sat up, her heart racing. "We can end this."
Dmitri nodded. "We can. But we need to be careful. The council is guarded by the best soldiers money can buy. They will have contingencies for every scenario."
Anya’s crimson eyes hardened with determination. "Then we will be ready for them. We have come too far to fail now."
Dmitri pulled her into his arms, his lips finding hers. "I love you, Anya. Whatever happens next, I want you to know that."
She kissed him back, pouring all her love and hope into the contact. "I love you too. And we are going to win. Together."
The war was far from over. But in that moment, in Dmitri’s arms, Anya felt invincible.
’Nothing can stop us now. Nothing.’
