Chapter 28: The Reckoning

The guards came for them too soon.

Dmitri felt Anya tense in his arms as the heavy door swung open, revealing three armed men in Syndicate tactical gear. Their weapons were trained on him, but their eyes flickered with something that looked almost like fear.

"Time’s up, Volkov," the lead guard said, his voice steadier than his hands. "The Pakhan wants the female back in observation."

Dmitri rose from the bed, positioning himself between Anya and the guards. His silver eyes blazed with cold fury. "You will not touch her."

The guards exchanged glances. They had heard the stories. They knew what Dmitri Volkov was capable of.

"Orders are orders," the guard said, raising his weapon higher. "Step aside, or we will put you down."

Anya moved before anyone could react. She grabbed the metal tray from the bedside table and hurled it at the lead guard’s face. He staggered back, his nose crunching under the impact.

Dmitri lunged forward, his chains still binding his wrists but his body a weapon nonetheless. He drove his shoulder into the second guard’s chest, sending him crashing into the wall. The third guard fired, but the shot went wide, ricocheting off the reinforced glass of the observation window.

In the chaos, Anya grabbed a fallen weapon and pointed it at the remaining guard. Her hands were steady, her crimson eyes burning with purpose.

"Drop it," she commanded. "Or I will put a bullet in your skull."

The guard hesitated, glancing at his fallen comrades. Dmitri rose to his feet, his chains rattling as he moved.

"You heard her," he said, his voice a low growl. "Drop the weapon, and I might let you live."

The guard’s resolve crumbled. He released his gun, raising his hands in surrender.

Dmitri crossed to him in two swift strides and knocked him unconscious with a single blow to the temple. Then he turned to Anya, his expression softening just slightly.

"You saved me," he said, the words carrying a note of wonder.

Anya lowered the weapon, her adrenaline beginning to fade. "We saved each other."

The facility’s alarms were blaring now, red lights flashing in a frantic pattern. Dmitri moved quickly, retrieving the keys from the unconscious guards and unlocking his restraints. The chains fell away with a clatter that sounded like freedom.

He pulled Anya into his arms, crushing her against his chest. "We need to move. They will send more."

They left the room and found the corridor in chaos. Scientists and guards ran in every direction, the explosion Dmitri had set in the power core causing cascading failures throughout the facility. Emergency lights flickered, casting everything in an eerie red glow.

Dmitri led the way, his hand gripping Anya’s with bruising intensity. They moved through the labyrinthine corridors, taking down anyone who stood in their path. Dmitri fought like a demon, his blood singing with the power Anya had given him.

"I can feel it," he said, pausing to catch his breath. "Your blood. It is making me stronger."

Anya nodded, her own body humming with strange energy. "I feel it too. The virus is... adapting."

They found the containment cell where Elena was being held. The dark-haired woman was pale but alert, her violet eyes widening with relief when she saw them.

"Anya!" Elena pressed her hands against the glass. "You came for me."

"We came for both of you," Dmitri said, overriding the lock with a device he had taken from a fallen guard. "We are leaving. Now."

The door slid open and Elena stumbled into Anya’s arms. The two women embraced, trembling with the weight of their shared ordeal.

"I thought I would never see you again," Elena whispered.

Anya held her tighter. "We are survivors. Both of us."

The building shook with another explosion, this one closer. Dmitri’s expression hardened. "We have minutes before this place collapses. Move."

They ran through the corridors, the sounds of destruction echoing behind them. Dmitri led the way with brutal efficiency, his body a shield against any threat. Anya stayed close, her weapon ready, her eyes scanning for danger.

Elena struggled to keep up, her body weakened by the experiments. Anya wrapped an arm around her, supporting her weight.

"I have you," Anya said. "Just keep moving."

They emerged from the facility into a snow-covered forest. The night air was bitter cold, and their breath turned to mist as they gasped for air. Behind them, the facility burned, flames licking at the sky.

Dmitri signaled his men, and a helicopter appeared over the treeline, its blades cutting through the frozen air. It descended into a clearing, kicking up snow and debris.

He lifted Anya into the helicopter, then helped Elena inside. His men greeted them with a mixture of relief and shock. Anya could only imagine what they saw. Two women covered in blood, their clothes torn, but their spirits unbroken.

As the helicopter lifted off, Anya looked down at the burning facility. Valeria was still inside, along with countless others who had served the Syndicate. She felt no pity for them.

Dmitri pulled her close, his body shielding her from the cold. "Rest," he murmured against her hair. "I will wake you when we arrive."

They arrived at a new safe house in the Moscow outskirts, a sprawling estate surrounded by high walls and armed guards. Dmitri carried Anya inside, refusing to let her walk despite her protests.

"We need to get you cleaned up," he said, his voice brooking no argument. "And medically examined. The Syndicate’s drugs are still in your system."

Elena was taken to a separate wing, with orders for the medical team to attend to her immediately. Dmitri’s men had already begun mobilizing, calling in favors, gathering intelligence. The war with the Syndicate had officially begun.

Anya sat on the edge of a massive bed in what was clearly Dmitri’s private quarters. The room was surprisingly warm, a fire crackling in the hearth. It felt like the first real luxury she had experienced in what felt like a lifetime.

Dmitri returned with a glass of water and a small bag of medical supplies. He knelt before her, his large hands gentle as he examined her wrists. The skin was raw and bruised, the chains having left their marks.

"These will heal," he said, applying antiseptic with careful precision. "But I will have the doctors look at you properly."

Anya watched him work, her heart aching. "You do not have to do this."

His eyes met hers. "I want to. I want to take care of you. Always."

She reached out, her fingers brushing his cheek. He leaned into the touch, his eyes closing for just a moment.

"I am still angry," she said softly. "At what they did. What they tried to do."

Dmitri’s expression hardened. "So am I. But we have time. We will make them pay. Together."

He finished bandaging her wrists and sat beside her on the bed. The firelight danced across his features, softening the harsh lines of his face.

"We have a long road ahead," he said. "The Syndicate will not stop. They will come for us again."

Anya nodded. "I know. But I am not the same woman they captured. I will never be that woman again."

Dmitri cupped her face, tilting it toward him. His silver eyes burned with intensity, a mix of fury and adoration that made her breath catch. "You are right. You are not the same. You are something more. Something extraordinary."

His lips claimed hers, hungry and demanding, pouring all his fear and rage into the kiss. Anya moaned against his mouth, her body responding despite the exhaustion that weighed her down. She needed this. Needed him. Needed to feel alive after everything they had survived.

Dmitri deepened the kiss, his tongue sliding against hers in a dance of dominance and possession. His hands roamed her body, relearning every curve, every dip, every hollow. He touched her like she was sacred, like she was the only thing in the world that mattered.

"I thought I had lost you," he growled against her neck, his teeth grazing her pulse point. "When they took you from that room, I thought I would die."

Anya arched into his touch, her fingers tangling in his dark hair. "I am here. I am not going anywhere."

He pulled back just enough to look at her, his expression fierce. "Promise me. Promise me you will never leave my side."

"I promise." She cupped his face, her thumbs brushing his cheekbones. "I love you, Dmitri. I love you so much it terrifies me."

He kissed her again, softer this time, but no less intense. His hands found the hem of her torn clothing, tugging at it with desperate urgency.

"I need to feel you," he said, his voice ragged. "I need to remind myself that you are real."

Anya helped him strip away the ruined fabric, her own hands working at the buttons of his shirt. They moved with frantic energy, shedding clothes until they were both naked, skin to skin in the firelight.

Dmitri’s body was a map of scars and muscle, every inch of him carved by violence and survival. Anya traced the lines of his tattoo, the thorned crown that marked him as the Pakhan of Moscow. Her fingers followed the ink down his chest, across his abdomen, until they found the hard length of his cock.

He hissed at her touch, his hips jerking forward. "Anya..."

She wrapped her fingers around him, stroking slowly, deliberately. "I want to please you," she whispered. "I want to make you feel good."

Dmitri captured her mouth in another kiss, his hand covering hers on his erection. "You do. Every single moment."

He guided her back onto the bed, his body covering hers. The weight of him was a comfort, a reminder that she was safe, that she was his.

His mouth traveled down her neck, nipping and sucking, leaving marks that would bloom into bruises. Anya moaned, her legs spreading to accommodate him. She was already wet, her body aching for him.

"Please," she begged. "I need you inside me."

Dmitri positioned himself at her entrance, the head of his cock pressing against her slick folds. "Look at me," he commanded.

She obeyed, her crimson eyes meeting his silver gaze.

"You are mine," he growled. "Say it."

"I am yours." The words came easily, naturally. "I have always been yours."

He pushed inside her in one smooth stroke, filling her completely. Anya cried out, her back arching off the bed. Dmitri groaned, his forehead dropping to rest against hers.

"So perfect," he murmured. "You were made for me."

He began to move, slow and deep, each thrust sending waves of pleasure through her body. Anya wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him deeper, wanting all of him.

"Harder," she gasped. "I need more."

Dmitri obliged, his pace quickening. The bed creaked beneath them, the sounds of their passion filling the room. He drove into her with relentless intensity, his hands gripping her hips hard enough to leave bruises.

Anya met him thrust for thrust, her nails raking down his back. She could feel the pressure building in her core, pleasure coiling tighter and tighter.

"I am close," she moaned. "Dmitri, please..."

"Come for me," he commanded, his voice rough with need. "Come on my cock. Show me what is mine."

His words pushed her over the edge. Anya shattered, her orgasm crashing through her like a wave. She cried out his name, her body clenching around him.

Dmitri followed moments later, spilling inside her with a guttural roar. His hips pumped a few more times before he collapsed against her, his weight pressing her into the mattress.

They lay there, panting, their bodies slick with sweat. Dmitri’s heart pounded against her chest, a rhythm that matched her own.

"I love you," he said, the words muffled against her neck. "I will never let anyone take you from me again."

Anya held him close, her fingers stroking through his hair. "I know. I trust you."

He pulled out of her gently, rolling to the side but keeping her tucked against him. The fire crackled in the hearth, casting dancing shadows across the room.

The next morning, Anya woke to find Dmitri already dressed, his expression dark as he spoke into his earpiece. He noticed her stirring and crossed to the bed, his intensity softening just slightly.

"There has been a development," he said, sitting beside her. "We have located Valeria."

Anya sat up, the blanket pooling around her waist. "Where?"

"Romania." Dmitri’s jaw tightened. "She has gone to ground in a Syndicate stronghold in the Carpathian Mountains. It is heavily fortified, but I have a team assembling as we speak."

Anya rose from the bed, her body still aching in the most delicious way from their night together. "I am coming with you."

Dmitri opened his mouth to argue, but she silenced him with a look.

"I am not asking."

He studied her for a long moment, his silver eyes searching her face. Then, slowly, a smile spread across his lips. It was a dangerous smile, the kind that promised violence and victory in equal measure.

"Then get dressed," he said. "We have a long flight ahead."

The team assembled in the hangar, a collection of Dmitri’s most trusted soldiers. Anya stood among them, dressed in tactical gear that had been altered to fit her curves. She looked like a warrior, her silver hair pulled back in a tight braid.

Elena came to see them off, her violet eyes filled with worry. "Be careful," she said, embracing Anya. "Valeria is dangerous."

Anya hugged her back. "So am I."

Dmitri boarded the transport helicopter and extended his hand to Anya. She took it without hesitation, climbing up beside him.

"Are you ready?" he asked, his voice barely audible over the roar of the blades.

Anya looked at the man she loved, the man who had changed everything she thought she knew about herself. She thought of all the pain they had endured, all the battles yet to come.

"I have never been more ready for anything."

The helicopter lifted off, carrying them toward the mountains and the war that awaited them.

Anya leaned against Dmitri, her hand finding his. Whatever came next, they would face it together.

’I am not just his blood orchid. I am his partner. His equal. His queen.’

The war was only beginning. But so was her reign.
