Chapter 30: Return to Moscow

Morning light filtered weakly through the heavy curtains of their private quarters. Anya woke slowly, the events of the previous night still lingering in her body. The successful assault, the destruction of the facility, the way Dmitri had held her afterward as if he could not quite believe she was real. For a few hours, the war had felt distant.

She turned her head. Dmitri was already awake, sitting on the edge of the bed with his back to her. His shoulders were tense, the muscles along his spine tight even at rest. He held a tablet in one hand, scrolling through reports with the same focused stillness he brought to everything that mattered.

"You’re up early," she said, her voice still rough from sleep.

He glanced over his shoulder. The silver in his eyes looked sharper in the low light. "Katya sent updates an hour ago. The city is already reacting."

Anya pushed herself up, pulling the sheet around her. "How bad?"

"Not bad. Restless." He set the tablet down and turned fully toward her. "Word about the facility spread faster than we expected. The Orlovs are testing the eastern routes. Sokolov’s people have gone quiet. A few smaller crews are probing the edges of our territory to see if we are distracted."

She absorbed the information in silence. Victory never lasted long in their world. The moment one threat fell, another always rose to take its place.

Dmitri watched her for a moment, then reached out and brushed a strand of silver hair away from her face. "You did well yesterday. Better than well."

Anya leaned into his touch. "I kept my promise. I came back."

"You did." His thumb traced the line of her jaw. "But the city does not care about promises. It only cares about strength. And right now every ambitious bastard in Moscow is measuring whether we still have it."

They dressed without hurry. Anya pulled on dark clothes that allowed easy movement, braiding her hair tightly out of the way. Dmitri remained mostly silent, his mind already turning through possibilities and responses. When they finally left the room, the mansion felt different. Quieter. More watchful.

Katya was waiting in the war room. The holographic map of Moscow glowed above the table, several districts marked in cautionary amber.

"You both need to see this," she said without preamble.

Dmitri moved to the table. Anya followed. On the display, a series of financial alerts flashed in the corner.

"What am I looking at?" he asked.

Katya tapped the interface. "A transfer. Two point four million moved out of one of the secondary operational accounts yesterday morning. It passed through three shell companies before disappearing into a private account registered in Belarus."

Anya frowned. "Who had access?"

"Only a handful of people. I already cross-checked the logs." Katya’s expression hardened. "The authorization came from Pavel’s credentials."

The name landed heavily in the room.

Dmitri’s face did not change, but the air around him seemed to cool. "Pavel has not checked in."

"No. His phone has been off for thirty-six hours. His apartment is empty. No one has seen him since the day before the transfer."

Anya felt a slow tightness settle in her chest. Pavel had been with Dmitri for years. Not one of the innermost circle, but trusted enough to handle significant sums and sensitive movements. Trusted enough that his betrayal would sting.

"He’s running," she said quietly.

"He’s already gone," Katya corrected. "And he did not leave empty-handed. The money is one thing. The real problem is what else he might have taken with him."

Dmitri remained still for several seconds. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and precise.

"Pull everything. Communication records, travel history, known contacts, every account he ever touched. I want to know the exact moment he decided to turn."

Katya nodded and left to begin the work.

Silence settled over the war room. Anya watched Dmitri as he stared at the map, his expression unreadable. She had seen him angry before. She had seen him cold. This was different. This was the quiet that came before something irreversible.

"You trusted him," she said.

"I did." He did not look at her. "That is why this cannot be ignored."

Anya stepped closer. "What do you want to do?"

"Find him." Dmitri finally turned his head. The silver in his eyes was flat and sharp. "And make certain that anyone watching understands what happens when trust is broken."

She studied him for a long moment. The man who had held her the night before was still there, but he had stepped back to make room for the Pakhan. The version of him the city feared.

"I’ll help," she said.

His gaze lingered on her. Something unreadable moved behind his eyes, then settled.

"Get ready," he said. "We start now."

Outside, the morning rain had turned to a fine gray mist. Moscow stretched out beyond the mansion grounds, wet and restless. Somewhere beyond the city limits, a man who had once sworn loyalty was running with stolen money and whatever secrets he thought would keep him alive.

He would not stay ahead for long.

Dmitri had already begun the hunt.

And this time, there would be no second chances.
