Chapter 4: Chapter 3: Returning to the Lowell Family
Yvonne Lowell was silent for a moment before looking up at him. "I’ve been abroad since I was eleven. It’s been okay."
Eleven? But his sister was lost at four! If she really was his sister, where had she been for the seven years in between?
Caleb Lowell was bursting with questions, but he was afraid of offending her. He could only sit across from her, his gaze fixed on her.
Just as Yvonne Lowell was starting to feel so awkward under his stare that her scalp was tingling, the food finally arrived.
Caleb Lowell first ladled a bowl of soup for her, added several pieces of spare ribs to her plate, then put on a pair of gloves and began peeling shrimp for her.
By the time Yvonne Lowell finished her soup, a bowl of shelled shrimp was pushed across the table to her.
She froze for a second. Before her mind could even process it, she had already raised her chopsticks and placed a piece of meat in Caleb Lowell’s bowl. "Thanks. You should eat too."
Pleasantly surprised, Caleb Lowell popped the meat into his mouth. *Tsk*, how had he never realized this sweet and sour pork was so delicious before?
Yvonne Lowell ate rather quickly, but her every move was graceful, far more so than those who proclaimed themselves to be ladies from prestigious families.
After they finished their meal, the two returned to the hospital with a takeout order for Assistant Grant.
Assistant Grant, who was waiting in the director’s office, saw them arrive and quickly stood up to greet them. "Boss, Miss... Miss Lowell."
He’d almost let it slip. He couldn’t help it; this young woman truly resembled Madam Lowell, more so than any of the plastic surgery monstrosities who had shown up at their door in the past. He hoped this time it was real.
He still remembered the young miss from his childhood—a soft, cuddly little thing, sweet-tongued and polite, like a little fairy.
Caleb Lowell handed him the food. "Go eat first. I can wait here."
"Yes, Boss." Assistant Grant took the food and went into the break room.
Yvonne Lowell had a habit of getting drowsy after a full meal. She sat down in a chair, pulled the brim of her baseball cap down, and prepared to rest her eyes.
Seeing this, Caleb Lowell didn’t want to disturb her and sat down to the side.
Half an hour later, the director pushed the door open, his face beaming with joy.
At the sight, Caleb Lowell shot to his feet. "How is it? What are the results?"
Yvonne Lowell also opened her eyes and looked up.
Although she knew the result was a certainty, in that moment, she suddenly wanted to see Caleb Lowell’s reaction.
"President Lowell, I think it’s best if you unveil the mystery yourself!" The director handed him the test report.
Caleb Lowell quickly flipped the report to the last page. It read: DNA test results show a similarity of 97.015%, a high-level match consistent with a biological sibling relationship.
The heart that had been hanging in suspense finally settled. This time, it was real! His sister, the one they had been searching for for fifteen years, was back!
His intuition when he first saw her hadn’t been wrong! This really was his biological sister!
Caleb Lowell’s eyes grew moist. He stepped forward and pulled Yvonne Lowell into a hug. "It’s good that you’re back. It’s so good. Thank you, thank you for being willing to come back."
Yvonne Lowell, who had been about to push him away, froze when she heard his words. Her arms unconsciously wrapped around him in a return embrace.
The director and Assistant Grant, standing to the side, were also filled with emotion. Fifteen years. Finally...
When Caleb Lowell had composed himself, he finally let her go and wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes.
He asked cautiously, "Nola, will you come home with Big Brother? We’ve always kept a room for you at home. We have the maids clean it every day. Everyone has been waiting for the day you’d come back."
Yvonne Lowell nodded. "Okay."
Hearing this, Caleb Lowell breathed a sigh of relief and reached out to ruffle her baseball cap. "Good. Let’s go home."
Caleb Lowell took her hand and started walking out.
Yvonne Lowell glanced down at their joined hands. *Oh well,* she thought. *We’ve already hugged. Whatever.*
Assistant Grant and the director were left behind, looking at each other in bewilderment. After coming to his senses, Assistant Grant also hurried after them.
Outside the hospital, Caleb Lowell was leading her towards his car.
Yvonne Lowell pulled him to a stop. "I drove here."
"Oh? Then can Big Brother ride in your car?" Caleb Lowell looked at her with anticipation.
Yvonne Lowell tossed him the keys directly. "You drive. You know the way."
"Okay, okay, Big Brother will drive." Caleb Lowell caught the keys and followed behind Yvonne Lowell, glancing back at Assistant Grant as he walked.
"Ian Miller, drive yourself back to the company. I’m not coming in this afternoon, you handle things."
Assistant Grant clenched his jaw and put on his professional smile. "Of course, Boss."
Seeing Yvonne Lowell stop, Caleb Lowell paused and glanced down at the key fob in his hand.
Huh? Oh. Holy—!?
"Nola, this car..."
Yvonne Lowell had already opened the passenger door and gotten in without looking up. "It’s mine."
Caleb Lowell started the car and drove towards the Lowell family’s villa.
On the way, he asked tentatively, "Nola, now that the results are out, would you... be willing to call me Big Brother?"
Yvonne Lowell found this a little amusing. She glanced at him. "Big Brother."
"Yes! Big Brother is here!" Caleb Lowell immediately broke into a wide grin, the kind he hadn’t shown in years—one so big it revealed his gums.
He was the first person his sister saw when she came back! He was also the first one she called!
Yvonne Lowell felt a bead of sweat. Cold and noble? Calm and self-possessed? Unsmiling? The King of Hell of the business world? Had The Lowell Group really multiplied its value several times over after he took over?
It had to be a lie, right? Was this guy not just a big doofus? For the first time, she began to doubt the capabilities of her intelligence network. This personality profile was more than a little off.
"Nola, I haven’t told the family you’re back yet. I was thinking of giving them a surprise later. It’s perfect, the second and third brothers are home recently too."
This was the truth. Before coming, Caleb Lowell had already decided: if it was really his sister, he would give everyone a surprise; if not, he would be the only one disappointed.
While waiting at a red light, Caleb Lowell turned to Yvonne Lowell. "By the way, during lunch, you said you’ve been abroad since you were eleven. Were you adopted?"
"I guess so."
"Did they treat you well?"
Yvonne Lowell nodded. "Very well. I never had to worry about food or clothing."
"What about the seven years before that? Were you in the country? We searched every single orphanage, big and small, across the country back then, but there was no trace of you," Caleb Lowell pressed.
Yvonne Lowell paused, turning to look out the window. "I don’t know. I had amnesia back then. I only remembered my name."
Her memories from before she was four were indeed gone, so she wasn’t exactly lying.
As for those seven years, it was all in the past. That person was long dead. There was no point in bringing it up; it would only lead to more questions, which was a hassle.
"It’s okay. As long as you’re back. From now on, our family will create many more wonderful memories together." Caleb Lowell’s heart ached hearing this, and he reached out to pat her head.
His sister must have had an accident when they didn’t know, suffered a serious injury, and that’s what caused her to lose her memory.
She was supposed to be a princess, doted on and raised by the Lowell and Sutton Families, yet she had been adrift for a full fifteen years.
Thankfully, she later met a kind person who adopted her, ending those hard days. The person who adopted her raised her well, and for that, Caleb Lowell was grateful.
...
The Lowell Family Villa.
Charles Lockwood and his wife, along with their second son, Harrison Lowell, and third son, Yancy Lowell, were sitting in the living room.
"Mom, Dad, what’s the big idea with Big Brother telling us to gather in the living room? I haven’t finished my game!" Harrison grumbled, his thumbs still flying across his phone screen.
Yancy Lowell glanced up at him before lowering his head to continue his schoolwork.
"Your big brother has his reasons. And you, you finally come home for a visit, and all you do is sleep and play games all day," Wendy Sutton said irritably.
Harrison sulked and shut his mouth. He didn’t dare argue; he knew he couldn’t win.
Back at the villa, Caleb Lowell led Yvonne Lowell inside by the hand.
The butler, Uncle Grant, heard the car engine and came out.
First glance: the Young Master was holding a girl’s hand?! He hadn’t said anything about bringing a girlfriend home to meet the parents today! Besides, with the Young Master’s perpetually stern face, how could he even find a girlfriend?!
Second glance: he saw the girl’s face clearly and froze.
"Young Master, this is..."
Caleb Lowell gave a slight nod and glanced at Yvonne Lowell. "Nola, this is Uncle Grant."
"Hello, Uncle Grant," Yvonne Lowell greeted obediently.
Uncle Grant couldn’t stop his nose from stinging with emotion. "Ah, hello, Young Miss. I’ll just go inside and tell..."
"Don’t, Uncle Grant. We’re planning to give Mom and Dad a surprise," Caleb Lowell stopped him, placing a finger to his lips.
Uncle Grant nodded hurriedly. "Yes, yes, of course. I won’t say a word. Go on in."
Caleb Lowell led Yvonne Lowell into the living room.
Hearing footsteps, the four people on the sofa all looked up.
Their mental process was identical to Uncle Grant’s. The moment she saw Yvonne Lowell’s face, Wendy Sutton leaped off the sofa and ran towards her barefoot.
The father and sons also walked forward quickly, with Charles Lockwood not forgetting to grab his wife’s slippers.
Standing before Yvonne Lowell, they looked as awkward as children, turning to Caleb Lowell with questioning eyes.
When they saw Caleb Lowell nod, Wendy Sutton could no longer hold back. She threw her arms around Yvonne Lowell and burst into tears. "Nola! It’s my Nola!"
"I’m so sorry. I let you suffer outside for so many years. It’s all Mommy’s fault. Mommy didn’t abandon you... Mommy was always looking for you... but I couldn’t find you. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, Nola..." Wendy Sutton was already crying so hard her voice had become hoarse.
Yvonne Lowell’s body went stiff. She shot a pleading look at Caleb Lowell beside her.
But not only did the rascal fail to help her out, he actually gave her an encouraging smile.
*Fine,* she thought. *Looks like I have to rely on myself.*
The problem was, she only knew how to kill people, not how to comfort them.
