Chapter 3: Chapter 2: Paternity Test (2)

Leo Grant didn’t respond. He had been focused on a document on his computer, only vaguely aware that a car had driven by. He didn’t know what kind it was, nor did he care.

’It’s not like he couldn’t afford one. It’s really not!’

Nolan Crawford was still muttering to himself, "As expected of the boss of Tidalview. Tsk, tsk... Say what you will, but that kind of money..."

「Half an hour later, at the entrance of the Lowell Group’s private hospital.」

"Boss, do you think it’s really the young lady this time?" Assistant Grant asked from the driver’s seat, looking back at Caleb Lowell.

Assistant Grant’s family had served the Lowell Family for three generations. He and Caleb Lowell had grown up together, making them not just superior and subordinate, but also brothers.

So, when they spoke in private, he was always more casual than others.

Caleb Lowell’s eyes were slightly closed. "Whether it’s her or not, a DNA test will tell us."

Even if it wasn’t, they would never give up searching for their sister.

Over the years, despite countless disappointments, they had never overlooked a single possibility.

Whenever they heard of a girl who resembled her in any city, no matter how busy they were, a family member who was free would go in person.

Just then, Yvonne Lowell, who had just parked her car, walked over and knocked on the window on Caleb Lowell’s side.

Caleb Lowell rolled down the window, about to ask what she wanted, but froze the moment he saw the young woman’s face.

Seeing that he wasn’t speaking, Yvonne Lowell broke the silence. "Sorry, there was a bit of traffic. I’m two minutes late."

"N-No problem!" Caleb Lowell scrambled to open the car door and stood before Yvonne Lowell.

’The resemblance! It’s uncanny!’

The young woman before him, dressed in a white T-shirt and cargo pants, was the spitting image of their mother in her youth!

Caleb Lowell prided himself on being a staunch materialist, someone who only ever trusted the evidence right in front of him.

Hiding his emotions was the first lesson his grandfather had taught him while grooming him to be the future Family Head.

In the past, whenever someone came to claim kinship, he could calmly take them for a DNA test, his attitude polite yet distant.

But the moment he saw Yvonne Lowell, a voice inexplicably surfaced in his mind.

’This is her! This is my sister! My real sister!’

Right now, he was acting just like an immature, hot-headed kid.

"You... um, were you the one who called me?" Caleb Lowell’s fingers curled involuntarily, feeling awkward and uneasy.

Yvonne Lowell looked at him as if he were an idiot. "I was. So, can we go in now?"

Caleb Lowell somehow understood the meaning in her eyes. He cleared his throat, trying to hide his embarrassment. "Right. Y-Yes, we can. Let’s go."

’Tsk, the file didn’t say this Caleb Lowell was a stutterer...’

Yvonne Lowell took the lead and walked into the hospital. Caleb Lowell followed closely by her side.

Assistant Grant trailed miserably behind them.

The three of them headed straight for the genetic counseling department. The department director saw them coming and quickly stood up to greet them. "President Lowell, you’re here today to...?"

"A DNA test. The fastest one you have." With that, Caleb Lowell pulled out a strand of his hair and handed it over.

The corner of Yvonne Lowell’s mouth twitched. She also pulled out a strand of her hair.

"Right, right, I’ll get right on it." The director took the hair, placed it in a sealed bag, and prepared to run the test himself.

’The young woman looks so much like Mrs. Lowell. I hope this is the one. Otherwise... I’m getting numb from all these DNA tests.’

He had been doing DNA tests for the Lowell Family since he was an attending physician. Now he was the department director, and he was still doing DNA tests for them.

——————————

"The DNA test will take about three hours. Are you hungry? Why don’t we get something to eat first?" Caleb Lowell hesitated for a moment before turning to the young woman beside him and speaking.

Yvonne Lowell nodded. "Then let’s go."

"Ian Miller, you stay here and keep an eye on things. I’ll get you takeout later," Caleb Lowell said, then walked out with Yvonne Lowell.

"Yes, Boss."

The poor hospital director heard the big boss had arrived and rushed downstairs in such a panic that his toupee went crooked, only to find the big boss had already left?

’Damn it! So frustrating! Now I have to fix my hairpiece again.’

In the elevator, Caleb Lowell asked cautiously, "What would you like to eat? The Lowell Group has invested in the restaurant next door, so their braised short ribs are pretty good. Would it be okay to just grab a bite there for now?"

Yvonne Lowell froze for a second. She really did love braised short ribs. She’d forced the chef at Prosperity Pavilion to revise the recipe countless times before he finally made a version she found barely acceptable.

Snapping out of it, Yvonne Lowell nodded. "Okay."

The two arrived at a private room in the restaurant. Caleb Lowell handed the menu to Yvonne Lowell. "See what you’d like to eat."

"Braised short ribs and sweet and sour pork. You can just order whatever else you think is good." After speaking, Yvonne Lowell pushed the menu back to him.

Noticing her gaze linger on the braised prawns several times, Caleb Lowell added the dish to the order, along with a few others.

Yvonne Lowell looked up at him, a hint of confusion in her eyes.

"If you want to eat it, you should order it. I’ll peel them for you," Caleb Lowell said with a smile, having read her thoughts.

"Thank you."

Just then, the waiter spoke up at the right moment. "Do either of you have any dietary restrictions? Like scallions or cilantro?"

"No scallions."

"No scallions."

They both spoke at the same time, then simultaneously looked at each other. Yvonne Lowell, feeling a bit awkward, was the first to look away.

’When they were little, his sister loved shrimp and sweet and sour dishes, but she always hated peeling the shells. She would always act cute and coax her brothers into peeling them for her.’

’As for scallions, they never even appeared on the Lowell family’s dining table.’

Caleb Lowell’s confidence grew.

After the waiter left, Caleb Lowell hesitated for a moment before speaking. "How did you find me? You even knew my private number."

"I had someone look it up."

’The people who work for me count as "someone," right?’

But upon hearing this, a completely different scene played out in Caleb Lowell’s mind: a poor girl who never had enough to eat or warm clothes to wear, scrubbing dishes just to make ends meet. She must have spent all her hard-earned savings hiring a high-end detective to investigate her past—a regular PI certainly wouldn’t have had the skills. No wonder it took her so long to find her family. ’She’s had such a hard life...’

Yvonne Lowell: ’Thanks, but it only took five minutes. Didn’t cost a dime.’

"So... where have you been all these years? Were you adopted? Have you been doing okay?"
