Chapter 36: Chapter 35: Catching Up with an Old Friend
Passing the training grounds, Yvonne Lowell glanced over, only to see a pile of tanned, sinewy muscles.
A hint of disdain flashed in her eyes. ’I’ve seen it so many times I should be immune by now. Why are they suddenly so unpleasant to look at?’
’So boring. Not as handsome as my handsome man, skin’s not as fair, and their bodies aren’t as good, either.’
The thought made Yvonne Lowell pause. ’Huh? Why am I suddenly thinking of him?’ She quickly shook her head, casting the strange idea aside.
Entering the conference room, Yvonne Lowell strode brazenly to the head of the table, sat down, and propped her feet up.
Leon’s expression remained unchanged as he took a seat below her without a moment’s hesitation. He even conscientiously pulled out a cigarette and a lighter to light one for her.
The other followers didn’t react at all. They were used to it; after all, she was the true matriarch.
’Right, right, fine, fine. So I’m the fake matriarch, is that it?’ Leon grumbled to himself.
His men might as well have been thinking, ’You’re not even worthy of the title, thank you very much.’
"Spill it. What’s going on?" Yvonne Lowell said nonchalantly, blowing out a smoke ring.
"He snuck back into the country half a month ago, which is why we didn’t spot him. He’s holed up in the top floor of a clubhouse in the southern part of Country A. The intel we have so far is that he’s providing the clubhouse with a new type of drug from The Crimson Triangle. It’s made their business boom, and the person in charge is treating him like an honored guest," Leon explained.
Yvonne Lowell scoffed, though there was no humor on her face. "A new type of drug? It seems he’s been hiding out in The Crimson Triangle for the past two years, and doing quite well for himself. No wonder I couldn’t find him. But tell me, don’t you think it’s about time The Crimson Triangle had a change in leadership?"
Leon couldn’t help but shudder. ’It’s over. The matriarch is pissed.’
’Drugs and *that person* are the two things she hates most. With that double whammy, things are about to get interesting.’
Leon put on a pained expression. "Lowell, I’ve already sent people to The Crimson Triangle to investigate, but we haven’t found out which faction he’s connected to. Three different factions are producing that filth right now."
"Does it matter which faction it is?" Yvonne Lowell shot him a sideways glance.
Leon paused for a second before her meaning dawned on him. "Understood! Leave it to me, Lowell! You can count on me!"
’Well, if you put it that way, I’m wide awake now! Raiding and plundering... ahem, I mean, punishing the wicked, eradicating evil, and protecting world peace—that’s the kind of stuff I love to do!’
"By the way, Lowell, I’ve met the man in charge of that clubhouse. His name is Kyle Quinn, but he’s just a small fry. The person behind the scenes is unknown, so we can’t be sure if they gave the order."
"It doesn’t matter. Let’s go. Time to catch up with my ’old friend’." Yvonne Lowell’s expression didn’t change at his words. She stubbed out her cigarette and stood up.
"You got it!" Leon trailed closely behind her. As they passed Regan Knight, he couldn’t resist secretly ruffling the man’s hair.
Yvonne Lowell got right into the car. As for the other arrangements, wasn’t that what Leon was for?
...
An hour and a half later, they arrived at the clubhouse entrance.
Leon got out first and opened the car door for Yvonne Lowell.
Yvonne Lowell stared at the magnificent, gilded clubhouse, a flash of derision in her eyes. She subconsciously touched her left abdomen.
’What you do for a living, you pay for in the end, my ’old friend’.’
"Lowell?" Regan Knight asked, noticing she was standing still.
"It’s nothing. Let’s go." Yvonne Lowell lifted her foot and started toward the clubhouse.
Besides the three of them, they had only brought five mercenaries. The rest were on standby outside.
Meanwhile, a black car pulled to a stop near the clubhouse.
From the corner of his eye, Leo Grant glanced out the window and happened to see a figure from behind. The person’s long hair was tied up high, and they wore a long, beige trench coat over black jeans and a pair of dark brown combat boots.
His brow furrowed slightly. ’That silhouette... why does it feel so familiar?’
He remembered the helicopter taking off from Tidalview. ’Could it be...?’
"Leo, are we going in now?" Nolan Crawford, sitting beside him, broke his train of thought.
"Wait a moment."
Warren Lynch, in the driver’s seat, sensed that something was off. "Master, something’s not right. The clubhouse is surrounded."
"This... The cars parked around here all seem to belong to the Mercenary Corps," said Silas Lynch from the passenger seat after a moment of observation.
Nolan Crawford glanced outside. "You’re right. What’s going on? You don’t think they’re behind this, do you? But that doesn’t make sense. I thought Leon never touched this stuff. Don’t tell me this is a Mercenary Corps team-building exercise."
Initially, they had received a tip that made them suspect a problem within their own organization. A thorough investigation revealed that Kyle Quinn, the manager of the Country A clubhouse, had gotten greedy and started selling filth inside, even hiding his supplier on the premises.
That was why they had come today—to clean house.
"Silas, give me the laptop."
Leo Grant took the computer from Silas Lynch and began watching the clubhouse’s security feed.
"Isn’t that Leon?" Nolan Crawford leaned in for a closer look at the screen, then his face went pale with shock. "Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit! Yvonne Lowell?! Why is that matriarch here?! And with Leon?!"
Leo Grant stared at the young woman on the screen, his pupils constricting. It really was her.
’What’s her relationship with Leon, the leader of the Mercenary Corps? Though they’re standing shoulder to shoulder, I get the feeling she’s the real one in charge.’
Hearing the name, Silas Lynch whipped his head around. ’How is that possible?’
’Miss Lowell, who smiled so sweetly at the Master? Miss Lowell, who was so gentle and kind to us employees of The Grants? The precious jewel of the Lowell family in Kingsland is here?!’
’He’d attended her homecoming banquet and had seen what she was capable of then, but this is Country A, for crying out loud! It might not be a place that eats people alive, but it’s not exactly peaceful either!’
’She only has a fraternal twin brother. She doesn’t have an identical twin sister, right?!’
’And she knows the leader of the Mercenary Corps? Even though we have no dealings with them, we know that Leon kid is not someone to be trifled with.’
’As expected of the woman our Master has his eye on. She’s truly incredible!’
Only Warren Lynch was completely lost. ’Who’s Yvonne Lowell?’ He was usually abroad handling business for Leo Grant and rarely returned to Aurelia. ’Have I been left out? Have I fallen out of favor? Are the Master and Silas keeping secrets from me?’
「Back at the clubhouse.」
As soon as Yvonne Lowell and her group stepped through the main entrance, the lobby manager came forward to stop them. "Excuse me, everyone. Your membership cards, please."
"Get lost. Tell Kyle Quinn to come see me. You’re not qualified to stop me." Leon slid the sunglasses on his nose down, staring straight at the manager.
Hearing him use the boss’s name so directly, the manager froze for a moment.
Realizing this was someone he couldn’t afford to offend, he quickly said, "My apologies. Please wait a moment, I’ll go inform him right away."
A moment later, Kyle Quinn emerged from the elevator and approached them with an obsequious smile. "Well, well, Brother Leon, what brings you here today? Forgive me for not coming out to greet you. My men can be so thoughtless. Everything today is on me, as my apology."
