Chapter 28: Chapter 27: A Neat and Tidy Family of Four
"Drake~ you have to help me. Otherwise, the Sutton Group will definitely fall into the hands of that good-for-nothing Ethan Sutton, and I’ll have nothing left."
The first voice on the recording was Holly Sutton’s.
Then came another, gruffer male voice,
"Isn’t that your own brother? Do you really hate him that much?"
"Hmph. He’s just a freeloader who only knows how to ask for money. Why would I treat him like a brother? And what right does he have to compete with me? The Sutton Group will only be mine once he’s completely out of the picture."
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. The heart of a woman is the most venomous thing."
"Oh, but I’m doing it all for you, aren’t I? When the time comes, we’ll be the ones calling the shots at the Sutton Group."
"Alright. I can get someone to spike his drink for you, but how do you plan on repaying me?"
"You’re awful~ I’m yours to command, of course~"
What followed were lewd sounds that Yvonne Lowell, disgusted, immediately shut off.
"But I really must thank you, Miss Sutton. If not for you, I never would have stumbled upon a drug lord for the police while I was investigating you. If the department sends me a medal, I’ll be sure to break it in half and send your piece to you in prison."
Yvonne Lowell watched Holly Sutton with a mocking gaze.
Marilyn Walsh stared at Holly Sutton in disbelief.
"Holly, that’s your own brother! How could you..."
"Mother, that recording is a fake! I didn’t do it! Are you really going to believe an outsider over me? I’m your daughter! She’s slandering me!" Holly Sutton was still denying the undeniable.
A flash of impatience crossed Yvonne Lowell’s eyes as she cut in.
"I don’t have time to watch you two tear into each other. Marilyn Walsh, I’ll ask you one question: do you or do you not admit to kidnapping and selling the Ford siblings and me all those years ago?"
Yvonne Lowell’s powerful aura radiated outwards, and her intimidating presence made many in the room shrink back in fear.
Marilyn Walsh met her gaze and felt a sharp pain lance through her mind. Then, the words she’d held in her heart for years came spilling out.
"So what if it was me? Hector Sutton and I were childhood sweethearts, deeply in love. We were a match made in heaven! If that Nancy Rivera wouldn’t die and take those two bastards with her, then I had no choice but to sell them to traffickers. As for you, I had no idea you were the Lowell Family’s precious daughter. I just knew you saw the deal go down, so that’s just your own damn bad luck."
Behind her back, Yvonne Lowell’s hands clenched into fists, her nails digging into her palms.
A true killing intent surged through her. For a moment, she wanted to throw everything away and kill Marilyn Walsh right then and there.
But she couldn’t. She had a family who loved her now. What she’d done today was already pushing the limits. She couldn’t completely ruin the reputations of the Lowell and Sutton Families, couldn’t let her loved ones be disgraced because of her actions.
The guests’ attention was fixed on the Suttons, so no one noticed her state. Only the few who had been watching Yvonne Lowell closely sensed that something was wrong with her.
Several of them wanted to go to her, but Leo Grant was faster than all of them.
Leo Grant had somehow made his way onto the stage. He gently took her hand and uncurled her fingers, his voice warm.
"Careful now. You’re going to make yourself bleed."
A beat behind, the two families stared at each other. ’Wait, are they close? Yvonne is supposed to be one of us, right?’
Nolan Crawford: ’My bro is a legend! Making his move right out in the open!’
Yvonne Lowell froze for a second, then pulled her hand back and offered him a small smile.
"Thanks, Gorgeous."
Leo Grant gave a faint smile and said nothing, remaining by her side on the stage.
Down below, Marilyn Walsh finally snapped out of it, the realization of what she’d just said dawning on her. Her face fell, and she shot a pleading look at Hector Sutton.
But Hector Sutton didn’t even spare her a glance. Instead, he spoke with an air of profound grief.
"I never imagined my wife would be capable of such a thing. I am deeply disappointed. Since Director Hawthorne is here today, I will take the initiative and report her. I can only hope my wife reflects on her actions and reforms herself in prison. I will wait for her."
’Hilarious. Is that how you use words like "report" and "reform"? What a hick! An illiterate moron!’
Marilyn Walsh stared in utter disbelief at the man she had loved since she was sixteen, the man she’d thrown everything away for, the man for whom she’d willingly shouldered the label of "the other woman."
Now, all she felt was a chilling, laughable sense of betrayal. She lowered her head and fell silent.
"So, President Sutton, are you saying that the two children you had with your first wife were kidnapped and sold, and you were completely unaware?" Yvonne Lowell asked, looking down at the scumbag with an amused expression.
Hector Sutton put on an air of righteous indignation.
"Miss Lowell, ladies and gentlemen, I truly had no idea! She told me the two children had run away from home. I searched for them for a long time but couldn’t find them. But I never, ever gave up hope of finding them."
"Oh, so that’s how it was," Yvonne Lowell said with a cryptic smile.
"In that case, do you remember the names of your two children with Ms. Nancy Rivera?"
Hector Sutton froze. His mind was a complete blank. He couldn’t remember at all.
"My friend Luna—the one your illegitimate daughter pretended to be, his master’s prized disciple—his real name is Zachary Jacobs. He chose the name Luna in honor of his mother, Ms. Nancy Rivera, and his sister, Miss Esther Rivera. He is one of the children you claim you’ve been searching for all this time. It seems your words can’t be trusted at all, President Sutton," Yvonne Lowell sneered.
Hector Sutton was just about to shift his expression into that of a benevolent father, but Yvonne Lowell cut him off, leaving his face frozen in a twisted, comical mask.
"Of course, I’m not saying all this so you two can have a touching reunion. A piece of trash like you—who plotted the murder of his parents-in-law and his first wife, who sold off his own children—you don’t deserve it." Several pages of a document appeared on the screen behind her.
"This is just a fraction of the evidence. I won’t go through it all here, as I’ve already submitted the complete file to the authorities. Your family of four can have a reunion in prison. You know what they say, a family should stick together~"
After she finished speaking, Yvonne Lowell felt a weight lift from her.
The stone that had been crushing her chest for nine long years was, in that instant, gone.
Hearing this, a faint, relieved smile touched Marilyn Walsh’s pale face. Her eyes, as they fell upon Hector Sutton, were filled with scorn.
It finally dawned on Holly Sutton what was happening. Her facade of the innocent, pure maiden vanished, replaced by a venomous expression as she raised a hand to point directly at Yvonne Lowell on stage.
"You bitch! This was all on purpose, wasn’t it?! You were setting us up from the very beginning! This whole thing was a trap for our family!"
WHOOSH! A wine glass flew through the air and smashed against her mouth. Shards of glass sprayed across her face, and she screamed in pain.
Nina Jennings stared at her, her face a mask of cold fury.
"If you don’t want that mouth anymore, I can sew it shut for you."
Holly Sutton clapped a hand to her mouth, blood seeping through her fingers. Her eyes, fixed on Yvonne Lowell, were still brimming with hatred.
"Don’t flatter yourself. You’re just cuckoos who stole the nest. You took everything that belonged to the Ford Family, left the Ford siblings to wander and suffer, and were the reason Esther Rivera died in a foreign land. Frankly, sending you to prison is letting you off easy."
Yvonne Lowell looked down at her as if she were nothing more than an ant.
