Chapter 21: Chapter 20: Things Are Good Just Like This

With Caleb Lowell away on a business trip and Charles Lowell forced to go to work, the second brother busy with his public appearances, and the third called back to school, Wendy Sutton was the only one home.

Wendy Sutton, who was watching TV, heard footsteps and looked up. "Nola, you’re back. And this must be Nina? You’re so beautiful."

Before Nina Jennings arrived, Yvonne Lowell had already told Wendy Sutton that Nina and two other children with the last name Jiang were her most important friends.

Yvonne had been abducted, while a six-year-old Nina Jennings was sold by her own parents, who favored sons over daughters. For all these years, the girls had supported each other to get through those difficult times. As she thought about this, a pang of heartache colored Wendy Sutton’s affectionate gaze.

"Hello, Mrs. Lowell. You’re so beautiful too. When you go out with Yvonne, people must mistake you for sisters, don’t they?"

"Oh, you sweet talker. Don’t be nervous; just make yourself at home. It must have been so hard for you all these years. Thank you for always being there for Nola." Wendy Sutton took her hand and patted it gently.

"She was the one who was always there for me. I may be two years older, but I wouldn’t have accomplished what I have today if it weren’t for her."

Nina Jennings hadn’t been around elders in a very long time, so she was a little stiff at first. But seeing how easy-going Wendy Sutton was, she started to relax. In an instant, the two were chatting away like they were long-lost sisters.

Yvonne Lowell, emerging from the kitchen with orange juice, heard their conversation and smiled to herself.

’It was true, wasn’t it? We accompanied each other and helped each other succeed. Without either one of us, the other wouldn’t be where she is today.’

Yvonne Lowell sat down beside them, listening to them talk and chiming in every now and then.

When it was getting late, Wendy Sutton finally paused the conversation. "Nina, dear, I’m going to start preparing dinner. Have Nola take you up to see your room, and if you’re missing anything, just let the staff know. The clothes in the wardrobe are all new. I asked Nola for your size and preferred style and had some things sent over. If you don’t like them, just have Nola take you shopping. Treat this place like your own home, alright?"

With that, Wendy Sutton gently stroked Nina’s hair and headed to the kitchen with Nanny Warren.

"Okay... Thank you, Mrs. Lowell." Nina Jennings’s eyes welled up against her will. She turned slightly to wipe away a tear.

Yvonne Lowell pretended not to notice and stood up. "Come on, let’s go see your room."

"Hey, how can you be so heartless? You’re completely clueless!" Nina Jennings sniffled and followed her.

She followed Yvonne Lowell to the door of the room that had been prepared for her. Yvonne jerked her chin toward it. "Go on, take a look."

"What’s with all the mystery?" Nina Jennings twisted the doorknob and was stunned by what she saw inside.

She had assumed the Lowell family had just prepared a guest room for her, but it was a large suite. And it was a perfect, one-to-one replica of her old bedroom.

Back in that place, they had mostly slept on the floor, so a young Nina Jennings had always dreamed of having a room of her very own. When she finally got the first apartment of her life, she had personally overseen and designed every single detail.

Later, as she earned more money and acquired properties around the world, her master bedroom—no matter the style of the house—was always a perfect replica of that first one.

So, upon seeing this room, the tears Nina Jennings had just managed to suppress came pouring out.

"I hate you so much! You’re awful!" A blubbering mess of tears and snot, where was the cool, sophisticated woman from just a moment ago?

Yvonne Lowell shot her a look of mock disgust. ’She had to hand it to her,’ she thought, ’her makeup was seriously high-quality. Crying this hard, and it still hadn’t smudged.’

"My family also got you a gift. It’s on the bed. Rest for a bit; I’ll come back for you later."

With that, Yvonne Lowell closed the door for her.

In the split second before the door clicked shut, she heard Yvonne Lowell say, "When I was ten, I promised you that every house I ever owned would have a room for you. I don’t break my promises."

At that, Nina Jennings sank to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.

...

Some time later, Nina Jennings finally touched up her makeup, once again transforming into the energetic Nina everyone knew.

After finishing up his work, Zachary Jacobs also drove over to the Lowell estate, gift in hand.

Receiving a welcome just as warm as Nina Jennings’s left Jackie feeling a little overwhelmed.

Dinner consisted of just Mr. and Mrs. Lowell and the three friends, and the atmosphere was light and cheerful.

At the dinner table, Charles Lowell spoke up. "Nola’s three brothers couldn’t make it back in time, I hope you don’t mind. Please, make yourselves at home. Consider them your brothers, too."

"Not at all, Mr. Lowell. We’re the ones imposing," Nina Jennings and Zachary Jacobs said, waving their hands dismissively.

Charles Lowell shot them a playful glare. "How can it be an imposition when you’re coming home? We’ve already prepared rooms for you. You’re welcome to stay as long as you like. You can just think of it as keeping a couple of lonely old folks company."

"That’s right. We’re all one family from now on. In the past, you may have only had each other, but now you have a home, and you have a family," Wendy Sutton added, looking at them with gentle reproach.

After hearing this, both Nina Jennings’s and Zachary Jacobs’s eyes glistened with unshed tears.

’A home and a family, huh?’ they thought. ’It didn’t sound so bad. After all, this home seemed completely different from the ones they’d had before.’

"In my opinion, we should just go ahead and make you our godchildren," Charles Lowell declared, slapping the table as if the decision was final.

"What a wonderful idea! I agree. I’ll look for an auspicious date later," Wendy Sutton said, thinking he was right.

The two of them started frantically kicking Yvonne Lowell under the table, shooting her desperate looks.

Yvonne Lowell irritably pulled her legs away and cleared her throat. "Mom, Dad, I’m afraid the two of you can’t make that call. You’ll have to ask Grandpa first."

"Why? I’m just adopting a godson and a goddaughter. Why would I need Dad’s permission for that?!" Charles Lowell protested at once.

"Because Grandpa knows about them too. He’s also said they’re children of our family, but he never specified *whose* children. I’m just worried that your godson and goddaughter might end up becoming your little brother and sister, so you should probably ask Grandpa first. I’m full, you guys take your time!" Yvonne Lowell rattled off in a single breath, then dropped her chopsticks and bolted upstairs.

The four people left at the table stared at one another for a moment before bursting into laughter.

Mr. and Mrs. Lowell were happy because they finally saw their youngest daughter acting with the playfulness appropriate for her age.

As for Nina Jennings and Zachary Jacobs, their hearts warmed. She had just saved them from an awkward situation, even at the cost of her own composure.

Nina Jennings stifled her laughter and said, "Mr. and Mrs. Lowell, this is more than enough. We’re already so happy. Becoming your godchildren is just a title. As long as we consider each other family, none of that is important."

The Lowells didn’t press the issue. "You’re right. It’s just a title; it’s not important. In any case, we’re all family from now on."

...

Nina Jennings: ’Thank you for being willing to share your family with me, but I can’t be that greedy. The way things are now is perfect.’

Zachary Jacobs: ’Ditto.’

Yvonne Lowell: ’Idiots. Pfft. So melodramatic and sappy!’
