Chapter 20: Chapter 19: If You’ve Scolded Him, You Can’t Scold Me
Back in his room, Leo Grant thought for a moment before deciding to give Yvonne Lowell a call.
"What’s up, gorgeous?" A young woman’s flirtatious voice came through the phone.
Leo Grant pressed his lips together. "Why didn’t you tell me about your welcome-back banquet?"
"Huh? My mom said she sent invitations to all the families. Didn’t yours get one? That can’t be right." Yvonne Lowell didn’t quite catch his meaning at first.
There was a long silence. Just as Yvonne Lowell thought he had hung up, he said, "But you didn’t invite *me*."
’Tsk, why does he sound so resentful? He sounds so wronged.’
"Then just come with your family," Yvonne Lowell said, continuing to feign ignorance.
"But I want an invitation that’s just for Leo Grant."
A mischievous smile touched the corners of Yvonne Lowell’s lips. "Gorgeous, you’re getting spoiled."
"So, can I?" Leo Grant asked eagerly.
"Of course you can. Why not? I’ll bring it over to you right now. Wait for me."
"No need. Just wait for me at your gate. I’m on my way." After saying that, Leo Grant hung up and walked out quickly.
As he passed through the living room, the few people still fighting over dessert stared at him as if he were some kind of monster.
"Son! Hey, son...!"
’Why is the kid in such a hurry? He won’t even stop when I call him.’
Yvonne Lowell went downstairs, got a blank invitation from Uncle Grant, wrote Leo Grant’s name on it, and then walked out of the villa.
When she got outside, Leo Grant was already waiting at the gate.
"Here. I even wrote your name myself, you know," Yvonne Lowell said, handing him the invitation.
An inexplicable joy burst forth in Leo Grant’s heart as he took the invitation. He opened it and looked inside. The handwriting was strong and powerful, its style fluid and refined.
"Your handwriting is beautiful. I’ll be there on time." Leo Grant’s expression was completely serious, looking almost unreal under the glow of the streetlight.
"Hmph. If you dare to be late..." Yvonne Lowell didn’t finish her sentence, instead shaking her fist at him. The message was clear.
Leo Grant found her adorable and playfully ruffled her loose hair.
"Okay, I definitely won’t be late." ’I might even be early.’
The two of them stood there at the gate, chatting idly. The atmosphere was strangely harmonious.
Seeing it was getting late, Leo Grant lowered his gaze to the young woman before him. "You should go back. Get some rest."
"Okay."
Only after Yvonne Lowell’s figure was out of sight did Leo Grant start walking home.
The moment he walked through the door, he was met with an interrogation from his dear old mother.
"Sonny boy, where did you just run off to in such a rush? What’s that in your hand?"
Leo Grant’s expression didn’t change in the slightest as he slowly changed his shoes. "An invitation."
"An invitation? From who?" Mrs. Grant was completely baffled.
Leo Grant sat down on the sofa. "From the Lowells."
"The Lowells? Didn’t they already send an invitation? Good heavens, you actually had the nerve to go and ask for one. How did I give birth to such a shameless son? You might not care about your reputation, but your mother does!"
"This one is different. Yvonne invited me personally."
"How is it different? What, are you going to move out and get your own place... Wait, what did you just call her? Tsk tsk tsk, you’re really something else." Mrs. Grant slapped her thigh dramatically.
Mr. Grant gave him an appreciative look. "That’s my son. Excellent, just like me."
"Yeah, shamelessly excellent, just like you," Mrs. Grant shot back.
"Hey, dear, you already scolded him," Mr. Grant said, grabbing her sleeve and giving it a little shake.
Mrs. Grant shot him a sidelong glance. "And?"
"If you scold him, you can’t scold me!"
Beside them, a glint flashed in Old Master Grant’s eyes. Seeing his chance, he said nothing and quietly picked up a piece of the peach blossom cake they had been fighting over.
Completely unperturbed, Leo Grant stood up, paying no mind to their teasing. As he walked upstairs, he said,
"Grandpa, if you eat that much, aren’t you afraid you’ll be too stuffed to sleep tonight?"
"Hey, Dad!"
...
「Two days later, at Kingsland Airport.」
A tall, graceful figure was striding quickly toward the airport exit. The woman had platinum blonde curly hair and was wearing a red slip dress. A pair of oversized sunglasses hid most of her face, leaving only her red, slightly upturned lips exposed.
After Nina Jennings’s shameless and dramatic begging and pleading, Yvonne Lowell had caved and gone to the airport to pick her up personally.
Yvonne Lowell was leaning against her car, staring at her phone in boredom. Hearing familiar footsteps approach, she didn’t even look up.
Just as Nina Jennings was about to pounce on her for a hug, she nonchalantly sidestepped.
"Damn! Are you trying to kill me, Yvonne Lowell?! It’s a good thing I stopped on a dime, or they would’ve been flattened!" Nina Jennings complained irritably, braking to a halt.
Yvonne Lowell sauntered to the driver’s seat. "They really can’t be flattened. Seriously, they can’t."
"Hmph! Mine are one hundred percent original, thank you very much! But you still have to take precautions!" Nina Jennings huffed, plopping into the car and deliberately slamming the door.
Yvonne Lowell didn’t even spare her a glance as she started the car. "You know exactly how much I spent on Blackie. If the paint is chipped, you can deal with it."
"You’re ruthless."
Yvonne Lowell didn’t take her to Tidalview, but instead drove directly to the Lowell family villa.
"Huh? Yvonne, you’re supposed to drop me off first! Don’t tell me you expect me to drive myself back?" Nina Jennings asked, confused as she looked at the unfamiliar route.
"We’re not going to Tidalview. We’re going to my place," Yvonne Lowell said nonchalantly, one hand on the steering wheel.
"Are you crazy? Why didn’t you say so sooner?! This is so sudden, I didn’t even prepare a gift! I’m just going to show up empty-handed?!" Hearing this, Nina Jennings wanted to jump out of the car even more.
"It’s fine. Don’t worry about it. My mom just wants to meet you."
Nina Jennings put on a shy expression. "Oh? Meeting the parents already? Isn’t that a little inappropriate? I’m not ready."
"Oh, in that case, I’ll just tell my mom not to bother. She had a room prepared for you today and was even planning to cook herself." With that, she made a show of taking out her phone.
"No, wait! I’ll go, I’ll go! By the way, has Zachary Jacobs ever gotten this kind of treatment?" Nina Jennings quickly grabbed her hand.
"Not yet." Before Nina Jennings could get too happy, Yvonne Lowell added, "But he’s coming over today too."
Nina Jennings took a deep breath, lowered her head, and started trying to brainwash herself, muttering under her breath, ’It’s fine. He’s just an extra. Auntie is mainly doing this for me. Yes, that’s right. I’m your best friend.’
"Get out. You’re being noisy."
"Hey, are you going to throw me out in the middle of..." Nina Jennings didn’t finish her sentence. She turned to look out the window. "Oh, we’re here."
She hastily pushed the door open and got out.
As soon as they entered, Uncle Grant came to greet them. "Welcome back, Young Miss. Hello, Miss Jennings. Please, come in."
"Hello, Uncle Grant," Nina Jennings said with a smile.
Ever since Yvonne Lowell returned to the Lowell family, they had memorized the files on every single family member, so much so that they’d even assigned numbers to the stray cats behind the old mansion.
