Chapter 34: Chapter 34: I’ll Spare Your Life for Now

Shen Ling’an was already on the verge of going berserk. When Lu Jingyu suddenly sent him flying, the new offense piled on top of old grudges, completely igniting his rage.

Dark green energy instantly enveloped Shen Ling’an’s entire body, and his eyes began to glow red.

With a great roar, he charged, ready to fight Lu Jingyu to the death.

At that moment, Lu Jingyu was flying toward the giant pig with all his might, trying to prevent a tragedy. He paid Shen Ling’an no mind at all.

Still, a few team members steeled themselves and rushed forward to intercept the berserking Shen Ling’an.

Xu Ruming watched all this silently, unmoved.

One of the members yelled, "What are you standing there for? Hurry up and calm him down!"

Xu Ruming froze for a second before an indignant expression crossed her face.

’Who does he think he is? How dare he yell at me.’

"That’s the West District chemical plant! If Lu Jingyu can’t stop it, the contamination source will spread! Don’t you know what’s more important?"

At these words, a panicked expression crossed Xu Ruming’s face, and only then did she hurry forward to calm Shen Ling’an.

At this point, most of the team members’ attention was focused on Lu Jingyu.

Xu Qingsui was no exception, but she had also noticed the situation unfolding on the side.

The team member’s words immediately made her suspicious.

Her gaze shifted between the two, and she had a vague feeling they shared some kind of sordid secret.

BANG!

A tremendous crash pulled Xu Qingsui’s attention back to the main fight.

Just as the giant pig was a few meters from the chemical plant, Lu Jingyu finally flew in front of it, using his own body to block its path.

However, the creature’s berserk power was not to be underestimated. Combined with the immense inertia from its giant body, the pig continued to push Lu Jingyu toward the chemical plant.

For a moment, everyone held their breath, praying that Lu Jingyu could bring it to a stop.

Those few short seconds felt like an agonizing eternity.

Before everyone’s eyes, Lu Jingyu finally brought the giant pig to a halt.

But in doing so, his body made contact with the chemical plant wall.

For an instant, it was as if time had stopped. The world fell silent.

A few seconds later, when there was no sound of a crash and the chemical plant’s walls hadn’t so much as trembled, everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief.

In mid-air, Lu Jingyu braced his body against the giant pig, his brow tightly furrowed.

After confirming the wall behind him was stable, he heaved the giant pig away, throwing it to the side.

Then he quickly retreated, putting distance between himself and the chemical plant.

After catching his breath, Lu Jingyu charged the giant pig again, unleashing his suppressed fury upon it.

His sharp dagger plunged straight into the giant pig’s body, leaving only the hilt visible.

Gripping the hilt, he wrenched it sideways, ripping the pig’s hide open.

The giant pig didn’t even have time to squeal. It convulsed twice, then fell to the ground, its life extinguished.

Seeing the giant pig was dealt with, the team let out a collective sigh of relief, rubbing their dry eyes and looking away.

By now, Shen Ling’an had been successfully calmed down. Still, he remembered being slapped by Lu Jingyu, and his eyes reddened as he prepared to go and settle the score.

Xu Ruming stopped him and whispered a few words in his ear. Only then did Shen Ling’an abandon his impulse to fight Lu Jingyu to the death.

He thought he would at least glare at Lu Jingyu to vent his anger, but as soon as he looked up, he found Lu Jingyu standing before him again.

SLAP!

Before he could even process what was happening, a sharp pain shot across his face, and Shen Ling’an was sent flying once more.

"Lu Jingyu!"

After learning he had nearly caused the chemical plant’s contamination source to spread, Shen Ling’an had suppressed his anger and was prepared to let the first slap go. Who would have thought he’d get slapped again?

Shen Ling’an roared as he scrambled to his feet, ready once more to fight Lu Jingyu to the death.

But the moment he was up, Lu Jingyu was already in his face.

He grabbed him by the collar and hauled him up.

Shen Ling’an, at 1.8 meters tall, was not short by any means, but Lu Jingyu’s 1.85-meter frame gave him a clear height advantage.

Now, Lu Jingyu gripped Shen Ling’an’s collar and lifted him so they were eye to eye.

"Do you have any idea what a disaster you almost caused? You should be grateful nothing happened. Otherwise, I would have made you pay a hundred times over."

"Let me tell you, those two slaps were just the interest. The chemical plant’s wall didn’t collapse, but it’s cracked. That will inevitably accelerate the contamination leak."

"If that leak causes so much as a single casualty later on, I’ll make you pay it all back, with interest."

In this Apocalypse, a contamination leak was a fatal threat. Shen Ling’an’s actions had crossed Lu Jingyu’s line.

It was only because there were no casualties yet that Shen Ling’an was still alive. Otherwise, Lu Jingyu’s first slap would have sent him to meet his maker.

After saying his piece, Lu Jingyu viciously shoved Shen Ling’an to the ground.

Shen Ling’an’s eyes were filled with venomous hatred as he glared at Lu Jingyu.

He struggled to get up and confront Lu Jingyu, but Xu Ruming threw herself in front of him, holding him back.

She whispered something more in his ear, and only then did Shen Ling’an indignantly abandon his attempt to argue.

But his venomous gaze remained fixed on Lu Jingyu, so much so that he failed to notice the fervent, almost fanatical light in Xu Ruming’s eyes as she stared at Lu Jingyu.

Ignoring Shen Ling’an, Lu Jingyu immediately called over two team members.

"The chemical plant wall is cracked, which will accelerate the contamination leak. Have your people clear a five-kilometer perimeter. No one gets close."

"And post a guard. The moment there are any signs of a leak, notify me immediately. We must be prepared to keep casualties to an absolute minimum if the contamination spreads."

The two members acknowledged the order and quickly led several squads away to carry out Lu Jingyu’s instructions.

"Meng Donghua, have you tallied the casualties from the fight?"

"Captain, the situation was too chaotic to get an exact count. But so far, it looks like there are no deaths, just injuries of varying severity."

"All the wounded have been transported back to base. We’ll know the specifics once we get back."

Lu Jingyu nodded. Ignoring the others, he immediately left for the base with Xu Qingsui.

On the way, Xu Qingsui could see that Lu Jingyu was preoccupied with the wounded, so she didn’t dare disturb him.

But, remembering that he had just saved her life, she finally spoke up. "Thank you for what you did back there. If it wasn’t for you, I might have ended up as the only corpse."

Lu Jingyu glanced at her and shook his head. "I should be the one thanking you. You were willing to enter the battlefield under those conditions to help treat the wounded."

"Besides, I know that with your spiritual power, you could have easily sensed the danger behind you. You only missed it because you were focused on saving the wounded."

"On behalf of every team member you treated, thank you. When I get the chance, I’ll make sure they repay this debt."

Lu Jingyu’s words made Xu Qingsui feel a little embarrassed.

’I only stepped in because I got caught up in the heat of the moment,’ she thought. ’Otherwise, I definitely would have just stayed on the sidelines and watched.’
