Chapter 35: Lu Jingyu’s Identity
Chapter 35: Chapter 35: Lu Jingyu’s Identity
Not knowing how to respond, Xu Qingsui’s mind drifted back to what had happened earlier.
"The first time you sent Shen Ling’an flying, he wanted to get revenge, but a few people came out and stopped him."
"One of them said a few words to Xu Ruming. I found it very interesting. I can’t shake the feeling that they’re plotting something."
"I think you should be careful, just in case there’s trouble brewing behind your back."
Lu Jingyu nodded. He was already suspicious of Shen Ling’an and Xu Ruming, and Xu Qingsui’s words undoubtedly confirmed his conjectures.
"Do you remember who they were? Especially the one who spoke to Xu Ruming."
Xu Qingsui thought for a moment. "The one who was speaking was the man standing to Shen Ling’an’s left when you sent him flying the second time. The others were all behind that person."
Lu Jingyu’s brow tightened as several faces surfaced in his mind.
However, he had never heard of these individuals being particularly close to anyone.
The trail went cold again. Lu Jingyu could only set the matter aside for now.
Upon returning to the base, Lu Jingyu headed straight for the infirmary.
Xu Qingsui, with nothing else to do, followed him the whole way.
Meanwhile, Meng Donghua had already arrived at the infirmary ahead of them and finished his tally.
As soon as Lu Jingyu entered, Meng Donghua came up to him. "Captain, I’ve finished the count. The number of injured is as high as sixty-seven. Eighteen are seriously wounded, and twenty were scratched by Mutants and are at risk of infection. The rest have minor to moderate injuries and are in no serious danger."
Lu Jingyu’s brows knitted tightly. Although there were no fatalities this time, the number of injured had reached a new high.
And worst of all, twenty people were at risk of infection!
It was hard enough dealing with ordinary creatures that had been infected and turned into Mutants. If a Sentinel were to be infected and mutate, they would become a far more formidable foe.
"How many anti-infection agents does the infirmary have left? Is it enough for the injured?"
Meng Donghua looked troubled. "Captain, I was just about to bring that up. The infirmary only has ten anti-infection agents left. We’ve already administered them to the ten with the highest risk of infection. There are still ten people waiting for the medicine."
Meng Donghua stole a glance at Lu Jingyu and asked cautiously, "Captain, did you manage to bring any agents back from your trip?"
Lu Jingyu nodded, then took a portable safe from his Space Ring and handed it to Meng Donghua.
"There are exactly ten anti-infection agents and some other medical supplies in here. The password is the same as before. Go and administer the agents to those ten people first."
Meng Donghua let out a visible sigh of relief, took the safe, and returned to the infirmary.
Xu Qingsui watched Lu Jingyu, piecing together some information from their conversation.
’Lu Jingyu really was away during this time.’
’Maybe he wasn’t intentionally avoiding me after all.’
Sensing Xu Qingsui’s gaze, Lu Jingyu looked back at her, puzzled.
"What is it?"
Xu Qingsui smiled. "It’s nothing. I just thought you were avoiding me these past few days!"
Lu Jingyu couldn’t help but be taken aback.
"Why would you think that?"
Seeing the two of them talking, Meng Donghua, who had just returned, stood at the doorway, not daring to speak.
"He told me that Xu Ruming came to see you that day, and that when you returned, you seemed off. And from that day on, you disappeared."
Noticing Meng Donghua had returned, Xu Qingsui pointed directly at him.
Meng Donghua froze, not yet understanding what was happening, only to feel Lu Jingyu’s reproachful gaze.
"From what I know of Xu Ruming, she would never have anything good to say, so it’s not surprising you’d react that way."
Lu Jingyu slowly shook his head. "She did come looking for me, saying she wanted to tell me some things about you. But with someone like her, what good could she possibly have to say?"
"I don’t trust her character, so naturally, I wouldn’t believe her words. There was no need to let her waste my time."
Xu Qingsui was stunned. Lu Jingyu hadn’t even listened to Xu Ruming bad-mouth her.
This inexplicable trust sent a warm current surging through Xu Qingsui’s heart.
She knew from the original owner’s memories that ever since Xu Ruming returned to the Xu Family, she had done many things to frame her.
Other than her deceased grandmother, her own parents who raised her and her childhood sweetheart fiancé had all believed Xu Ruming, treating her as the villain.
And now, Lu Jingyu was the second person to trust her unconditionally.
For a moment, she looked at Lu Jingyu, unsure of what to say.
Feeling a bit awkward under Xu Qingsui’s stare, Lu Jingyu turned to look at Meng Donghua.
"A grown man like you, gossiping?"
Meng Donghua silently lowered his head.
"And if you were going to tell her everything, why didn’t you mention that I had left Zone 9?"
If Meng Donghua had made that clear at the time, Xu Qingsui wouldn’t have misunderstood.
Meng Donghua gave an awkward laugh. "I thought the Guide knew!"
After speaking, Meng Donghua quickly looked at Xu Qingsui, adding as if to remedy the situation, "Our boss leaves Zone 9 for a few days every so often. This was one of those times."
Seeing Xu Qingsui nod, Meng Donghua turned back to Lu Jingyu. "Captain, the anti-infection agents have all been administered. We don’t have any more in reserve. The team doctor asked me to see if you could get your hands on a few more."
Lu Jingyu’s expression soured slightly. Meng Donghua quickly added, "Captain, we know supplies are tight right now, especially medical supplies. The doctor just wanted me to ask, there’s no other meaning behind it. Please don’t overthink it."
Lu Jingyu nodded. "I know. It’s just that this is all I could bring back this time. We’ll have to wait until next time. I’ll try to bring back more then. For now, tell everyone to be extra careful on missions and do their best to avoid getting scratched."
Meng Donghua nodded repeatedly, not daring to say anything more, and left to report back to the team doctor.
"Why are you looking at me like that again?" After dismissing Meng Donghua, Lu Jingyu once again felt Xu Qingsui’s astonished gaze on him.
Xu Qingsui sized up Lu Jingyu, growing ever more curious about his identity.
In any Apocalypse, supplies were the most sought-after commodity.
For some powerful groups, obtaining living supplies was relatively easy.
But medical supplies had the narrowest channels and were the hardest to acquire.
It was for this very reason that the Xu Family had arranged a marriage with the young master of the Lu Family from Capital City, whose power had gone berserk.
They risked their own daughter being torn to shreds in exchange for a few life-saving anti-infection agents.
And from what Meng Donghua had just said, Lu Jingyu was able to obtain medical supplies every time he went out, including the most difficult to procure anti-infection agents.
And this time alone, Lu Jingyu had managed to get his hands on ten anti-infection agents in one go.
Such an ability was definitely not something the captain of a mere Zone 9 team could accomplish.
Xu Qingsui suddenly realized that Lu Jingyu must have a much more formidable identity behind him.
But if he had such a powerful background, why was he holing up here, serving as the captain of a team?
