Chapter 37: Academy
Chapter 37: Academy
Only the academy’s highest-ranking staff knew that he possessed the Mark of the Tomb.
To everyone else, he was simply another first-year student.
Kaiser quietly walked to an empty seat near the window and sat down.
The little bird on his shoulder flew onto the windowsill and remained there silently.
A few nearby students looked at the bird with curiosity.
"Is that your familiar?"
A boy sitting in front of Kaiser turned around and asked.
Kaiser nodded.
"You could say that."
The boy smiled.
"I’m Rowan."
"My Divine Mark is the Mark of Bones."
"I’m walking the Bone Knight Path."
Kaiser returned the smile.
"Kaiser."
Before the conversation could continue, the classroom door opened again.
A tall woman wearing black academy robes walked inside.
Her long silver hair was tied behind her back, and a silver badge was pinned to her chest.
Kaiser immediately recognized her.
It was Leoness Rim.
The classroom quickly fell silent.
Leoness looked around at every student before speaking.
"Good morning."
"Welcome to your first day at the Death Academy."
"My name is Leoness Rim."
"For the next year, I’ll be your homeroom instructor."
She picked up a piece of chalk and wrote three large words on the blackboard.
Power. Responsibility. Knowledge.
She turned back to the class.
"Those three words are the foundation of this academy."
"If you understand them, you’ll become an excellent Marked."
"If you ignore them..."
"No amount of talent will save you."
As she said those words, Leoness’s gaze lingered on Kaiser for a brief moment before sweeping across the rest of the class.
"Now then."
"We’ll begin your very first lesson."
"Competition exists everywhere."
"And the Death Academy is no exception."
She casually waved her hand.
A massive black portal slowly opened in the center of the classroom.
Dark mist drifted from its surface as countless silver runes rotated around its edges.
The students stared at it in shock.
Leoness spoke calmly.
"Beyond this portal lies my personal Death Realm."
"It was created using a Tier 9 spell."
"Inside, I’ve prepared a large island specifically for today’s lesson."
The entire classroom fell silent.
A Tier 9 spell.
Many students had never even heard of someone capable of casting magic at that level.
Leoness continued.
"Once you enter, all of you will fight each other."
"Don’t worry."
"No one will truly die."
"Your souls will simply return here if you’re defeated."
Several students let out sighs of relief.
Leoness wasn’t finished.
"The goal is simple."
"Survive."
"The longer you survive, the higher your ranking."
"But hiding until the end won’t work."
"The island will gradually shrink."
"Eventually..."
"It will become small enough that only one student can remain."
She looked around the classroom.
"So..."
"Fight."
"And survive."
She folded her arms.
"Any questions?"
A nervous boy slowly raised his hand.
"Um... will it hurt if we—"
"I don’t have time for questions."
Leoness interrupted without the slightest hesitation.
She casually flicked her finger.
Whoosh!
Streams of Soul Mana burst from her fingertips.
Before anyone could react, the mana wrapped around every student’s soul.
"W-Wait!"
"What kind of spell is this?!"
"My soul!"
Several students cried out in panic.
The next instant, their vision went black.
One by one, their souls were pulled from their bodies and thrown into the portal.
The classroom instantly became empty, leaving behind only dozens of unconscious bodies sitting quietly in their chairs.
Just before disappearing, one student shouted angrily,
"What kind of crazy teacher is this?!"
Another yelled,
"My father is a Grand Warlock! I’m going to report this!"
Leoness simply watched them vanish.
A faint smile appeared on her face.
"Good."
"Now let’s see which one of you deserves to stand at the top."
With that, she stepped through the portal herself.
As soon as Leoness stepped through the portal, she appeared inside a large stone castle overlooking the entire island.
She walked toward a spacious balcony.
Floating before her was an enormous magical screen.
Dozens of smaller windows covered its surface, each displaying the location of a different student.
Every movement on the island was clearly visible.
Leoness smiled faintly.
"This is the best part of being a teacher."
"Watching a battle royale between a group of little troublemakers."
She sat down in a comfortable chair.
A long table in front of her was already filled with snacks, fruits, drinks, and desserts.
She casually picked up a biscuit and took a bite while watching the screens.
"Let’s see who surprises me today."
...
Meanwhile...
Kaiser slowly opened his eyes.
The scenery around him had completely changed.
He found himself standing in the middle of an open grassland.
Rolling hills stretched into the distance.
A dense forest stood to his left.
A river flowed quietly on his right.
Far away, mountains surrounded the island from every direction.
Kaiser immediately checked his surroundings.
"No one nearby."
He then looked down at himself.
He was still wearing his academy uniform.
His spell slots were exactly the same.
Everything he had learned over the past month was still available.
He quickly opened his status window.
His class and all of his class spells were present.
However, one thing immediately caught his attention.
"My Talent..."
He tried activating Flames of the Soulless.
Nothing happened.
He tried again.
Still nothing.
A system notification appeared before him.
Kaiser looked at the notification.
A blue screen floated before him.
[The Cosmic System cannot be accessed inside an artificial world such as the Death Realm.]
[All System-granted skills, classes, and Talents are sealed while you remain here.]
Kaiser read the notifications before quietly thinking,
"Well..."
"The only thing I’d really miss is my Talent."
"Even my Raise Skeleton skill is weaker than the spells I’ve learned in this world."
He calmly looked around his surroundings.
"And I doubt I’ll find anything living here to use my Talent on anyway."
Although the realm looked peaceful, Kaiser could sense that everything was saturated with dense Death Mana.
The trees, the grass, the air, and even the bright blue sky were filled with faint traces of Death Mana.
It was as if the entire world had been created from it.
"A Tier 9 spell..."
"I read that they’re called World-Class Spells."
"And they truly live up to the name of World-Class Spells."
Kaiser murmured as he looked around, touching the grass beneath his feet.
Everything felt completely real.
"It feels like an entirely separate world."
He quietly looked into the distance.
"I wonder if I’ll ever be able to create something like this."
With that thought, he chose a direction and began moving forward.
