Chapter 35: Sariel

"The academy is much larger than I expected."

Leoness smiled.

"This is only the outer campus."

"The inner campus is where second-year and senior students train."

"There are also restricted areas."

"The library."

"The spell vault."

"The summoning grounds."

"The undead research hall."

"And the cultivation tower."

"Those places require permission to enter."

Kaiser nodded.

"I understand."

After another few minutes, they arrived at a five-story stone building.

"This is the first-year dormitory."

Leoness took out a black crystal card and handed it to Kaiser.

"This is your student identification card."

"It also serves as the key to your room."

"It records your academy points."

"And it allows you to enter academy facilities."

Kaiser accepted it.

The card felt cold to the touch.

His name was already engraved on its surface.

Kaiser Storm

First-Year Student

Death Academy

Leoness led him inside the building.

The corridors were clean and quiet.

Most of the rooms were still empty because the new students had not yet arrived.

She stopped in front of a wooden door marked 108.

"This is your room."

She touched her own crystal card to the lock.

Click.

The door opened.

The room was simple but spacious.

There was a bed, a desk, a bookshelf, a wardrobe, and a small meditation room connected to the bedroom.

A large window overlooked the academy grounds.

Leoness nodded.

"You’ll be staying here from now on."

"If you need anything, you can ask the dormitory staff."

"Tomorrow morning, I’ll take you on a tour of the academy."

Kaiser smiled.

"Thank you, Instructor Leoness."

She nodded.

"Get some rest."

"You’ve had a long day."

With that, she turned around and quietly left.

Kaiser walked to the window and looked out at the enormous academy.

Students continued training in the distance.

Some practiced magic.

Others sparred with swords.

A few were even commanding undead in the training grounds.

A faint smile appeared on Kaiser’s face.

"Given everything that’s happened so far, I’m almost certain this trial will grant me a Necromancy-related class."

"And with my original Reconstruction Talent..."

"I’ll be able to continuously evolve and strengthen my undead."

The thought alone was enough to lift his spirits.

However, the day’s events had completely drained him.

He had awakened a Divine Mark, narrowly escaped death, been carried across the sky like a sack of potatoes, arrived at the Church of Death, and spent hours learning about Divine Marks, spell slots, and his first spells.

His mind was overflowing with new information.

As soon as his head touched the pillow, sleep claimed him.

Meanwhile, in the Holy City of Light...

Priest Theodore had finally been granted an audience with the Pope.

He walked through the enormous golden doors and entered the Grand Hall.

Towering white marble pillars supported a ceiling covered in golden murals depicting the Goddess of Light. Sunlight poured through magnificent stained-glass windows, bathing the hall in a warm golden glow.

At the very end of the hall sat a woman upon a majestic golden throne.

She quietly read a book, her posture graceful and composed, as though nothing in the world could disturb her.

She was Pope Sariel, the supreme leader of the Church of Light.

Without lifting her eyes from the pages, she spoke in a calm voice.

"What is it?"

Theodore immediately dropped to one knee.

"Your Holiness..."

"I bring grave news."

"The Mark of the Tomb has appeared once again."

Only then did Sariel slowly close her book.

Her long platinum-blonde hair shimmered beneath the sunlight, while her brilliant golden eyes carried an authority that seemed capable of seeing through every secret hidden within a person’s soul.

Even Theodore couldn’t stop himself from admiring her beauty.

One day...

She will kneel beneath me.

The arrogant thought had barely crossed his mind.

Boom!

An overwhelming pressure descended upon him like a collapsing mountain.

Theodore crashed face-first into the marble floor.

His entire body was pinned down.

He couldn’t move.

He couldn’t even raise his head.

Every bone in his body trembled under the crushing force.

Sariel looked down at him with an unreadable expression.

"And what did you do?"

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Theodore struggled just to breathe.

"I... attempted to eliminate the child..."

"But the Witch of Death, Rihana... appeared..."

"She rescued him."

Silence.

The entire hall became deathly quiet.

After several long moments, Sariel finally spoke again.

"You..."

"Tried to kill him?"

Theodore hurriedly nodded.

"Yes, Your Holiness."

"I believed eliminating him immediately would prevent future—"

Slash!

A brilliant blade of holy light flashed across the hall.

"AAAAAHHH!!"

Theodore’s scream echoed throughout the palace.

Both of his arms fell onto the marble floor.

Blood spread rapidly beneath him.

He stared at the severed stumps with eyes filled with disbelief and terror.

Sariel slowly rose from her throne.

Her face remained perfectly calm.

Yet the divine pressure surrounding her became several times stronger.

The marble floor beneath Theodore cracked under the weight of her aura.

"Are you truly that foolish?"

Her voice was no longer merely cold.

It carried unmistakable disappointment.

"You attempted to murder a child blessed with one of the highest-ranking Divine Marks..."

"Without considering the consequences?"

Theodore’s entire body shook violently.

"I... I only wanted to protect the Church..."

"You wanted to satisfy your own arrogance."

Sariel interrupted without hesitation.

"If the Church of Death had never discovered that child..."

"Your actions would have been reckless."

"But instead..."

"You personally delivered one of the greatest talents of this generation into their hands."

Her golden eyes grew even colder.

"Do you have any idea what the Mark of the Tomb represents?"

Theodore remained silent.

He didn’t dare answer.

Sariel continued.

"We are not prepared to wage war against the Church of Death."

"Not now."

"You could have approached the child peacefully."

"You could have earned his trust."

"You could have placed him under our observation."

"And when the proper opportunity presented itself..."

"We could have acted without exposing ourselves."

Her gaze sharpened.

"But instead..."

"You attacked him publicly."

"You forced the Church of Death to intervene."

"And now they will protect him at any cost."

A terrifying wave of holy power exploded from her body.
