Chapter 33: Choosing Spells II
Chapter 33: Choosing Spells II
Kaiser nodded.
"So even someone with a Death Divine Mark doesn’t have to become a mage."
"Correct."
Magnus continued.
"The fourth path is the Spirit Priest."
"They heal souls."
"They remove curses."
"They guide wandering spirits."
"They specialize in support."
"Many people believe every Death cultivator only knows how to kill."
"Spirit Priests are proof that this is completely false."
He moved to another branch.
"The fifth path is the Plague Master."
"They create poisons."
"They spread diseases."
"They weaken entire armies before the battle even begins."
"It is one of the rarest paths."
Magnus smiled.
"These are only the major paths."
"There are many smaller branches."
"Bone Mages."
"Grave Keepers."
"Corpse Alchemists."
"Soul Forgers."
"Ghost Tamers."
"And many more."
Kaiser looked at the map with interest.
"So which path should I choose?"
Magnus looked directly into his eyes.
"None."
Kaiser blinked.
"None?"
Magnus nodded.
"You possess the Mark of the Tomb."
"Your authority stands above every one of these branches."
"Ordinary cultivators are forced to specialize because their Divine Marks have limits."
"Yours doesn’t."
"You can walk multiple paths at the same time."
"You can command undead like a Necromancer."
"Use soul techniques like a Soul Mage."
"Fight in close combat like a Death Knight."
"And even learn the abilities of the other branches."
"The only limitation is your talent, your time, and your understanding."
Kaiser looked down at his Divine Mark.
"So I don’t have to choose one path."
Magnus smiled.
"No."
"You create your own path."
"The Mark of the Tomb has only appeared a handful of times throughout history."
"There is no complete guide for it."
"Every previous bearer walked a different road."
"That is why you shouldn’t ask what path you should follow."
He pointed at Kaiser’s chest.
"You should ask..."
"What kind of Death do you wish to command?"
Kaiser thought for a moment before replying,
"So, you mean I should create an entirely new path by combining the advantages of the others?"
Magnus smiled.
"Hmm, that’s one way to put it."
"What I really mean is this."
"Create a path with as few weaknesses as possible."
"Your Mark of the Tomb allows you to do exactly that."
He folded his arms.
"Every path has strengths."
"But every path also has weaknesses."
"A Necromancer is incredibly powerful with an army."
"But without undead, most Necromancers become much weaker."
"A Plague Master can wipe out thousands of enemies."
"But against someone highly resistant to poison, disease, or decay, much of their power is reduced."
"A Death Knight dominates close combat."
"But they usually lack long-range attacks."
"A Soul Mage possesses mysterious techniques."
"But their physical defense is often lacking."
Magnus looked directly at Kaiser.
"You don’t need to inherit those weaknesses."
"You have the freedom to combine the strengths of multiple paths."
"That’s the true value of the Mark of the Tomb."
He then picked up three books from the table.
"For now, I recommend learning these."
He handed the first book to Kaiser.
Tier 1 Spell: Spectral Hands
"It creates incorporeal hands made from Soul Mana."
"They can lift objects."
"Carry equipment."
"Grab enemies."
"Restrict movement."
"Attack."
"And perform many other tasks."
"It is an extremely versatile spell."
"Almost every Death Mage learns it."
Magnus picked up the second book.
Tier 1 Spell: Spectral Blade
"This spell condenses Necrotic Energy into razor-sharp blades."
"It is a pure offensive spell."
"The blades are fast, powerful, and difficult to defend against."
"They’re excellent for both direct attacks and surprise strikes."
Finally, he picked up the third book.
Tier 1 Spell: Familiar Call
"This spell belongs to the Ghost Tamer branch."
"It allows you to form contracts with wandering spirits and ghosts."
Kaiser blinked.
"Ghost Tamer?"
Magnus nodded.
"Yes."
"And let me give you one piece of advice."
"If you ever encounter a humanoid ghost..."
"Don’t make a contract with it."
Kaiser looked at him in confusion.
"Why?"
Magnus chuckled.
"Because most humanoid ghosts are troublesome."
"They’re intelligent."
"They have their own personalities."
"And many of them enjoy causing problems."
"They rarely listen to inexperienced Ghost Tamers."
Kaiser scratched his head.
"So Ghost Tamers really exist..."
He couldn’t help thinking,
The hell? Ghost Tamers sound like ghost hunters.
And what does he mean by humanoid ghosts?
Are there different kinds of ghosts?
Magnus smiled after noticing Kaiser’s expression.
"I know it sounds strange."
"But remember."
"As followers of the God of Death, we can communicate with the souls of all living beings."
"Humans."
"Beasts."
"Birds."
"Insects."
"Anything that possesses a soul."
"If you happen to encounter the ghost of an ordinary animal..."
"Don’t hesitate to form a contract with it."
"Ghost Beasts have enormous growth potential."
"They continue evolving as they grow stronger."
"In theory..."
"There is no upper limit to their evolution."
He smiled faintly.
"So if one day you see the ghost of a squirrel defeating a dragon..."
"Don’t be surprised."
Kaiser silently stared at him for several seconds.
"...I have a feeling this world is going to be much stranger than I thought."
Magnus laughed.
"Don’t worry."
"You’ll get used to it."
Kaiser nodded with a small smile.
"I hope so."
Magnus pointed at the three books.
"Now."
"These are the spells I recommend."
"Two Tier 1 spells."
"And one Tier 0 spell."
"They’re an excellent foundation for someone with the Mark of the Tomb."
He then gestured toward the remaining books on the table.
"You still have five Spell Slots left."
"So the remaining choices are yours."
"I’ve already given you the best advice I can."
"The rest depends on your own judgment."
Kaiser looked at the pile of books.
"So even you won’t decide for me?"
Magnus shook his head.
"No."
"If I choose your spells, you’ll end up following my path."
"I don’t want another Edward Magnus."
"I want Kaiser Storm."
"You should build a foundation that suits you."
He smiled.
"Everyone with the Mark of the Tomb walks a different road."
"You should do the same."
Magnus folded his arms.
"When you eventually advance to Tier 1, your current spells will become part of your Divine Mark."
"Your Spell Slots will become empty again."
"At that time, I’ll recommend another set of spells."
"By then, I will have observed your fighting style."
"I’ll know your strengths."
"I’ll know your weaknesses."
"And I’ll be able to recommend spells that truly complement your path."
Kaiser nodded.
"That makes sense."
