Chapter 32: Choosing Spells

Magnus smiled and nodded.

"Yes."

"You’ll begin studying at the Death Academy."

"It is the greatest academy under the Church of Death."

"It has existed for thousands of years."

"Our goal is simple."

"We teach every student how to properly control the power they have been given."

"We don’t teach people to kill."

"We teach them when they should fight."

"We teach responsibility."

"We teach discipline."

"We teach respect for both life and death."

He paused for a moment before continuing.

"Every student studies history, combat, magic, alchemy, monster knowledge, survival, and the laws of the Church."

"You will also receive practical training."

"You’ll explore dungeons."

"You’ll fight monsters."

"And you’ll learn how to work alongside other cultivators."

Kaiser nodded.

"It sounds like a complete academy."

Magnus smiled.

"It is."

"Many of the strongest Necromancers, Death Knights, Soul Mages, and Spirit Priests on the continent graduated from there."

He stood up from his chair.

"Now."

"It’s time for you to learn your first spells."

Kaiser looked surprised.

"Spells?"

Magnus nodded.

"Of course."

"You’ve awakened your Divine Mark."

"That means you can now engrave spells into it."

He walked over to Kaiser and pointed at the black Divine Mark on his forehead.

"Close your eyes."

"Focus on your Divine Mark."

Kaiser did as instructed.

His consciousness soon entered a strange inner space.

The ancient Mark of the Tomb floated before him.

Around it, ten small silver stars revolved in a slow circle.

Kaiser opened his eyes in surprise.

"There are stars around my Divine Mark."

Magnus nodded.

"Those stars are your Spell Slots."

"Every cultivator possesses them."

"You engrave spells into those slots."

"The higher the spell’s tier, the more slots it occupies."

Kaiser listened carefully.

Magnus continued.

"Tier 0 spells require one Spell Slot."

"Tier 1 spells require two."

"Tier 2 spells require three."

"The requirement continues increasing as the spell tier rises."

Kaiser frowned slightly.

"I only have ten stars."

"Doesn’t that mean I’ll eventually run out of Spell Slots?"

Magnus chuckled.

"That’s a common question."

"No."

"When you advance your cultivation, your spells also evolve."

"For example, when you advance from Tier 0 to Tier 1, every Tier 0 spell engraved in your Stars of the Divine Mark get absorbed into the mark."

"Once that happens, the Divine Mark Spell slots get empty, opening room for new spells"

"As for those spells, they become instinct."

"You no longer need Spell Slots to maintain them."

Kaiser’s eyes lit up.

"So the slots become empty again?"

"Exactly."

"You can then engrave new Tier 0 spells into those empty slots."

"As your cultivation continues to grow, you’ll repeat this process over and over."

"That is why powerful cultivators can master hundreds of spells throughout their lives."

"They simply continue engraving new ones after advancing."

Kaiser slowly nodded.

"I understand now."

"So Spell Slots aren’t a limit on how many spells I can learn."

"They only limit how many spells I can currently engrave before my next advancement."

Magnus smiled with satisfaction.

"Correct."

"You learn quickly."

He waved his hand, and several ancient books appeared on the desk.

"Now."

"Let’s choose your first Tier 0 spells."

Magnus waved his hand.

One book after another appeared on the table.

There were thick black books, gray books bound in leather, and several thin manuals covered with ancient silver letters.

He looked at Kaiser.

"These are the beginner spells stored by the Church of Death."

"I’ve already selected the ones most compatible with your Divine Mark."

"You won’t need to waste time looking through thousands of spells."

Kaiser looked at the stack with interest.

"There are quite a few."

Magnus nodded.

"There are five Tier 1 spells."

"And ten Tier 0 spells."

"You only have ten Spell Slots."

"So you’ll have to decide carefully."

He picked up one of the books.

"Remember."

"A Tier 0 spell occupies one Spell Slot."

"A Tier 1 spell occupies two."

"If you choose all five Tier 1 spells, your ten Spell Slots will be completely filled."

"If you choose only Tier 0 spells, you’ll be able to learn ten of them."

"Or..."

"You can mix both."

"The choice is entirely yours."

Kaiser nodded.

"So I should prioritize the spells that suit my fighting style."

"Exactly."

Magnus smiled.

"There is no perfect combination."

"Some Necromancers prefer summoning."

"Some specialize in curses."

"Others focus on soul magic."

"Every path has its own strengths."

He gently pushed the books toward Kaiser.

"I won’t make the decision for you."

"The spells you choose now will shape your foundation."

"Take your time."

"Read every description."

"Then decide which spells you want to engrave into your Divine Mark."

Kaiser sat down and looked at the pile of books.

"Can you explain the different paths my Divine Mark can take?"

Magnus smiled.

"I was expecting you to ask that."

He walked toward a large bookshelf and took out an old map.

Instead of countries, the map displayed dozens of branching lines.

He placed it on the desk.

"The Mark of the Tomb is one of the highest authorities under the God of Death."

"It does not lock you into a single path."

"It simply gives you a greater affinity for all paths related to Death."

Kaiser listened quietly.

Magnus pointed at the first branch.

"The first path is the Necromancer."

"It focuses on commanding undead."

"Skeletons."

"Zombies."

"Ghouls."

"Liches."

"Death Knights."

"The strength of this path lies in overwhelming numbers."

"The longer a battle continues, the larger your army becomes."

He moved his finger to another branch.

"The second path is the Soul Mage."

"It specializes in souls."

"It attacks Spiritual Power."

"It seals souls."

"It creates Soul Constructs."

"It is extremely effective against ghosts, spirits, and mental attacks."

"Their direct destructive power is lower than a Necromancer’s, but their techniques are much more mysterious."

He pointed to another line.

"The third path is the Death Knight."

"It is a close-combat path."

"Death Knights strengthen their bodies with Death Mana."

"They wear heavy armor."

"They wield swords, spears, or great axes."

"They are among the strongest frontline warriors."
