Chapter 31: Death Church III

Kaiser looked back at Rihana.

She gave him an encouraging nod.

"You don’t need to worry."

She then looked toward the elderly priest.

"He is Cardinal Magnus."

"You could say he is one of the strongest people in the Church of Death."

Kaiser immediately bowed politely.

"It’s an honor to meet you, Cardinal."

Magnus smiled warmly.

"No need to be so formal."

"We’re family here."

Rihana continued.

"From today onward, Cardinal Magnus will personally take responsibility for you."

"He will teach you."

"He will protect you."

"And he will hide you from the Church of Light until you’re strong enough to protect yourself."

Kaiser nodded.

"I understand."

His eyes then moved to the Divine Mark on the Cardinal’s forehead.

Unlike his own mark, which resembled an ancient black tomb surrounded by pale flames, the Cardinal’s mark looked like a weathered stone grave wrapped in silver mist.

It gave off a heavy but peaceful feeling.

Noticing Kaiser’s gaze, Rihana smiled.

"You’re looking at his Divine Mark."

Kaiser nodded.

"It feels similar to mine."

"It carries the same aura."

Rihana explained.

"That’s because our Divine Marks belong to the same lineage."

"You possess the Mark of the Tomb."

"Cardinal Magnus possesses the Mark of the Grave."

"It is one rank lower than your Divine Mark."

Kaiser’s eyes widened slightly.

"So there are ranks even among Divine Marks?"

"There are."

"The higher the authority of the Divine Mark, the closer it is to the authority of the God who bestowed it."

"The Mark of the Grave is already among the highest-ranking Death Marks in existence."

"But the Mark of the Tomb stands above it."

She smiled.

"That is why Cardinal Magnus was chosen to become your guide."

"He cannot inherit your authority."

"But he understands the path better than anyone alive."

Magnus nodded.

"I have spent more than three hundred years walking the path of Death."

"I may not possess the Mark of the Tomb."

"But I can teach you how to control your power."

"How to cultivate."

"And most importantly..."

"How to stay alive."

Kaiser smiled.

"I’ll be relying on you then."

Magnus chuckled.

"I hope you will."

He turned toward the cathedral behind him.

"Come."

"There is much for you to learn."

"The Church has been waiting a very long time for another bearer of the Mark of the Tomb."

Without another word, Magnus led Kaiser into the Cathedral of Death while Rihana quietly followed behind them.

Magnus lead Kaiser to what seems like an Academy.

Meanwhile, after seeing Kaiser going to Academy, Rihana quietly excused herself.

"I’ll leave the rest to you, Cardinal."

Magnus nodded.

"I’ll take good care of him."

With that, Rihana turned around and left.

She walked through several long corridors before reaching the deepest part of the cathedral.

At the end of the hallway stood a pair of enormous black doors covered with silver runes.

Two Death Knights standing guard immediately bowed.

"Lady Rihana."

She nodded in return.

"Pope is expecting me."

The guards pushed open the massive doors.

Inside was a magnificent hall.

The walls were carved from black crystal, while countless violet gemstones illuminated the chamber with a soft glow.

At the far end stood a massive statue of a calm and benevolent man dressed in simple robes.

He held no weapon.

One hand rested on an open book, while the other was extended as if welcoming every soul that entered.

The atmosphere around the statue felt peaceful rather than oppressive.

Kneeling before it was a woman of breathtaking beauty.

She wore elegant black robes embroidered with silver.

Long silver hair flowed down her back, and a delicate black crown rested upon her head.

She slowly opened her eyes as Rihana approached.

This woman was the Pope of the Church of Death.

Pope Selene.

Rihana respectfully bowed.

"Your Holiness."

Selene stood up and turned toward her.

"I assume you’ve brought the child here safely."

Rihana nodded.

"Yes."

"I entrusted him to Cardinal Magnus."

"He will personally guide the child."

Selene smiled faintly.

"Good."

"There is no better teacher for him."

For a brief moment, Rihana couldn’t help admiring the woman before her.

Even after seeing her countless times over the years, Pope Selene’s beauty remained almost unreal.

It was graceful rather than dazzling.

Calm rather than overwhelming.

Before she realized it, she had become distracted.

Snap!

Selene lightly snapped her fingers.

Rihana immediately came back to her senses.

"My apologies, Your Holiness."

Selene simply smiled.

"It happens."

Her expression gradually became colder.

"Now..."

"Bring me the priest who dared to lay his hands upon one of our children."

Rihana’s eyes narrowed.

"I was already planning to."

"However, our Church teaches that every life has its destined time."

"I thought killing him immediately would go against our teachings."

She smiled faintly.

"But if Your Holiness permits it..."

"I’ll personally bring him here."

Selene shook her head.

"No."

"Death is not revenge."

"It is judgment."

"We will judge him according to our laws."

"If he is guilty..."

"Then he will receive the death he has earned."

Rihana nodded respectfully.

"As you wish."

With a burst of black mist, she disappeared from the hall.

Silence returned.

Selene slowly looked up at the statue of the God of Death.

After several moments, she quietly spoke to herself.

"So..."

"The Mark of the Tomb has finally appeared again."

She slowly closed her eyes.

"According to the ancient prophecy..."

"The appearance of that mark signals the beginning of an era of war."

"I only hope..."

"That child becomes strong enough before that day arrives."

Her gaze drifted toward the distant horizon beyond the cathedral.

Unfortunately...

She had no idea how accurate that prophecy truly was.

Meanwhile, on the other side...

Kaiser found himself sitting inside what looked like a principal’s office.

Magnus sat behind a large wooden desk and smiled.

"Now, let me properly introduce myself."

"My name is Edward Magnus."

"I was once an ordinary villager, just like you."

"I later enrolled in the Death Academy."

"After many years of study and cultivation, I became the principal of that very academy."

Kaiser nodded.

"So..."

"I’ll be enrolling there as well?"

Magnus smiled and nodded.
