Chapter 3: D-Day III
Although they weren’t known for exceptional combat ability, they were highly valued for their support capabilities.
That was why Kaiser chose it.
This was his Plan C.
Plan A had been to find a hidden gem among the free Beast Eggs.
That plan had failed.
Plan B was to awaken a powerful Talent.
Whether that would happen depended entirely on luck, so he couldn’t rely on it.
As for Plan C...
If he were to awaken a weak talent, then a Light-element beast would be an excellent partner.
Even if he didn’t become a powerful fighter, he could still work as a healer or support awakener.
Healers were always in demand.
Their income was stable, and they were welcomed by every dungeon team and Cosmic expedition.
For Kaiser, that was enough.
At the very least, he would be able to earn enough money to support his family and continue paying for his father’s treatment.
Thinking that far ahead, he smiled to himself.
"As expected, having backup plans is never a bad idea."
With that, he carried the Beast Egg back toward the Awakening Hall before the one-hour limit expired.
When he returned to his seat, both Alex and Alicia looked at the egg in his hands.
Alicia tilted her head.
"That looks like a Light-element Beast Egg."
Kaiser nodded.
"That’s what I think too."
Alex glanced at the pale white shell with its golden patterns before sighing.
"You should’ve just borrowed the money from me."
Kaiser smiled and shook his head.
"And then what?"
"What would you have told your father?"
"That you used your family’s money to buy your friend a Beast Egg worth hundreds of thousands of Cosmic Coins?"
Alex opened his mouth but couldn’t answer.
After a few seconds, he scratched the back of his head.
"...Sorry."
Kaiser knew Alex genuinely wanted to help.
The problem wasn’t his intentions.
It was the price.
Even the weakest Rank 1 Beast Egg cost around 100,000 Cosmic Coins.
A Rank 4 Beast Egg could easily sell for over 10 million CC.
No ordinary teenager could earn that kind of money.
The only way Alex could have afforded it was by asking his father.
Of course, wealthy families didn’t simply hand over such expensive Beast Eggs to outsiders.
Most would only agree if the recipient signed a long-term contract.
In exchange for the Beast Egg, they would have to work for the family’s guild or business for many years.
Kaiser had received similar offers after his father’s accident.
Several local guilds had been willing to sponsor a better Beast Egg for him.
The condition was simple.
After awakening, he would have to serve their guild for at least fifteen years.
Kaiser rejected every offer.
He preferred his freedom.
Besides, guild work was far from safe.
Most sponsored awakeners were assigned to dangerous dungeon expeditions or difficult Cosmic missions to repay the guild’s investment.
The death rate was much higher than that of independent awakeners.
He had no intention of tying his future to a contract before he had even awakened.
"I’ll manage," Kaiser said with a smile.
"If I really end up with a weak beast, I’ll just work harder than everyone else."
Alex and Alicia exchanged a glance before nodding.
There wasn’t much else they could say.
A few minutes later, the one-hour time limit came to an end.
The last group of students returned to the Awakening Hall carrying their chosen Beast Eggs.
The City Lord stepped onto the stage once again and raised his hand.
The hall immediately became quiet.
"Now that everyone has selected a Beast Egg, we will begin the Awakening Ceremony."
He looked across the thousands of students before continuing.
"You will come onto the stage five at a time."
"When your name is called, bring your Beast Egg with you."
Several staff members removed the large cloth covering the center of the stage.
Hidden beneath it was a crystal pedestal.
Resting on top was a massive orb nearly two meters in diameter.
The orb was transparent, yet countless rainbow-colored streams of light flowed inside it like liquid.
Many students looked at it with excitement.
The City Lord placed one hand on the orb.
"This is the Bonding Heart."
"It is one of humanity’s greatest treasures."
"It allows humans to safely form a Soul Bond with a newborn beast while awakening both their Talent and the Mark of Cosmic."
He stepped aside so everyone could see it clearly.
"The process is simple."
"Hold your Beast Egg with both hands."
"Then place one hand on the Bonding Heart."
"The artifact will guide the bonding process."
"If the bond is successful, the beast inside the egg will recognize you as its lifelong partner."
"At the same time, your Talent will awaken, and you will receive your Mark of Cosmic."
"After that, you will officially become an Awakened Human."
He paused for a moment before adding,
"Do not resist the energy flowing into your body. Simply remain calm and let the Bonding Heart do its work."
With the explanation complete, one of the staff members picked up a tablet.
"We will now begin the ceremony."
"The first five students, please come onto the stage."
Everyone in the hall unconsciously straightened their backs.
The Awakening Ceremony had finally begun.
The names were called one after another.
Five students walked onto the stage, each holding a Beast Egg in their arms.
Following the City Lord’s instructions, they placed one hand on the Bonding Heart while holding their eggs with the other.
The moment all five touched the crystal, the Bonding Heart shone brightly.
Rainbow-colored light spread across the stage and wrapped around each student.
A few seconds later, the Beast Eggs in their hands dissolved into streams of light.
The light entered their bodies through their chests before disappearing completely.
The rainbow glow slowly faded.
The five students opened their eyes one after another.
The City Lord smiled.
"Congratulations."
"You have all successfully awakened."
"Your beast partners are now resting inside your Bond Space."
"They will hatch naturally within the next twenty-four hours."
"During that time, familiarize yourselves with your new Talent and prepare to meet your partner."
