Chapter 2: D-Day II
"You’re here."
The principal of their academy was already standing at the entrance along with teachers from the other academies. Holding a tablet, he checked Kaiser’s name before nodding.
"Go inside and sit with your class. The City Lord will call everyone one by one."
Kaiser nodded and entered the Awakening Hall.
He quickly found his classmates and took an empty seat.
"You’re finally here, dude."
A handsome blond-haired boy waved at him.
Everything about him screamed playboy, and he truly was one.
His name was Alexander Keynes, one of the most well-known students in the academy. Despite his reputation, no girl seemed to mind. After all, his father was the Guild Master of the Stormwing Guild, the strongest guild in Silverleaf City.
"Welcome, Kaiser," said Alicia, another of his close friends.
Kaiser simply nodded. He was too nervous to talk.
"Relax, dude," Alex said with a grin. "The beast isn’t everything. Your Talent matters more."
Kaiser might have believed him...
If not for the massive crimson egg resting on Alex’s lap.
It was a Fire Drake Egg.
Fire Drakes were powerful draconic beasts, and an egg with Rank 8 potential could easily sell for over a billion Cosmic Coins, commonly known as CC.
Alex’s father had been fortunate enough to obtain three Fire Drake Eggs.
One was bonded with by Alex’s father himself.
One was given to Alex.
The last one had been gifted to the City Lord’s son, Kevin.
Kevin was the academy’s biggest bully. With his father’s influence and now a Rank 8 beast, everyone could already imagine how powerful he would become in the future.
As for Alicia, her family was also quite wealthy. She had brought a Rank 6 Beast Egg for today’s awakening.
Only Kaiser sat empty-handed.
His mother had insisted on taking a loan to buy him a better Beast Egg, but he refused.
She already worked day and night to pay for his father’s treatment.
He couldn’t bear to place another burden on her shoulders.
Instead, he was placing all his hopes on his Talent.
Unlike Beast Eggs, Talent couldn’t be bought with money.
It depended entirely on one’s own innate potential.
Besides, every awakened person could form up to three Soul Bonds during their lifetime.
Even if his first partner turned out to be a low-rank beast, there were countless treasures and opportunities inside Cosmic that could help it evolve in the future.
For now, Kaiser’s only goal was simple.
Awaken a powerful Talent.
Everything else could come later.
A few minutes passed as more and more students entered the Awakening Hall.
Soon, every seat was occupied.
Teachers stood along the walls while the students chatted quietly among themselves.
Then the large entrance doors opened.
Everyone immediately fell silent.
The City Lord walked into the hall.
He was dressed in a neat black suit instead of armor, yet his presence alone was enough to make the entire hall quiet. Even without releasing his aura, everyone could feel the pressure surrounding him.
He slowly walked onto the stage.
Standing behind the podium, he looked across the thousands of students before giving a brief nod.
"Good."
"It seems everyone has arrived."
He didn’t waste time on a long speech.
"Those of you who have brought your own Beast Eggs, please remain where you are."
"The rest of you, follow the staff members behind the hall."
"Over one thousand Beast Eggs have been prepared for today’s awakening. You may each choose one."
"You have one hour."
"As soon as you’ve made your choice, return here immediately."
The moment he finished speaking, more than half the students stood up.
They quickly followed the academy staff toward the rear of the Awakening Hall.
Kaiser was among them.
Since his father’s accident, he had spent countless nights reading books about magical beasts and Beast Eggs.
He knew the appearance, habits, and characteristics of hundreds of low-rank species.
If fate forced him to choose from ordinary eggs, then he would at least choose the best one available.
After walking through a long corridor, the students entered a massive warehouse.
Everyone stopped for a moment.
Before them were countless shelves stretching from one end of the building to the other.
Each shelf was filled with Beast Eggs of different sizes and colors.
Some were covered with crimson patterns.
Others were deep blue, emerald green, silver, or pure black.
The entire warehouse contained well over a thousand eggs.
The students immediately scattered in different directions.
Some rushed toward the nearest shelves.
Others carefully examined every egg before moving on.
Although all the eggs were officially classified as Rank 1 to Rank 3 potential, there were always rumors that a few hidden gems slipped into the yearly batch.
Some students even believed they could find a beast with Rank 4 or Rank 5 potential if they were lucky enough.
Whether the rumors were true or not, no one knew.
Still, everyone wanted to try.
No one dared to fight over an egg.
Several armed guards stood around the warehouse, watching every movement.
Anyone causing trouble would be thrown out immediately.
Kaiser ignored the crowd.
Instead of grabbing the first decent-looking egg he saw, he slowly walked deeper into the warehouse, carefully observing every single Beast Egg on the shelves.
He still had an hour.
There was no reason to rush.
Kaiser walked through aisle after aisle, carefully examining every Beast Egg.
He checked their color, size, shell patterns, and the faint mana they released.
From time to time, he picked up an egg, observed it for a few seconds, then placed it back.
Meanwhile, the warehouse gradually became emptier.
Many students simply chose an egg that looked impressive and returned to the Awakening Hall.
Others followed recommendations from books or family members.
Very few were as patient as Kaiser.
Half an hour passed.
Then forty minutes.
Then fifty.
Kaiser still hadn’t found what he was looking for.
He had hoped to discover a hidden gem—an unusually talented beast that had somehow ended up among the ordinary eggs.
Unfortunately, he found nothing that stood out.
With only ten minutes remaining, he let out a helpless sigh.
"I guess the rumors are just rumors."
He looked at the Beast Egg in his hands.
It was a pale white egg with faint golden lines running across its shell.
After examining it several times, he had concluded that it most likely contained a Light-element beast.
Light-element beasts were considered relatively rare among low-potential monsters.
