Chapter 28: Mark
Chapter 28: Mark
His parents immediately rushed over and hugged him with tears in their eyes.
The surrounding villagers applauded.
The Holy Master smiled faintly before calling the next child.
"Next."
One after another, the children stepped forward.
Some awakened the Hunter Mark.
Some received the Farmer Mark.
Others obtained the Craftsman Mark or Merchant Mark.
Every successful awakening filled the square with cheers.
Kaiser quietly observed everything.
He noticed that not every Divine Mark belonged directly to one of the Ten Gods.
Instead, the blessings manifested into countless different marks depending on the person’s talent and destiny.
Some Divine Marks were common.
Others were much rarer.
The stronger the mark, the brighter the light it emitted during the awakening.
Kaiser silently watched each ceremony, carefully memorizing everything.
Soon, only a handful of children remained.
His turn was getting closer.
Kaiser silently watched every awakening.
Soon, only a few children remained.
His turn was getting closer.
While waiting, he thought to himself,
’Even if I awaken a terrible Divine Mark, my Talent should carry me through this trial.
My original Talent is SSS-Rank.
One rank lower still means an SS-Rank Talent.
With an SS-Rank Talent, even an average Divine Mark should become something extraordinary.’
His confidence gradually returned.
A few moments later, the Holy Master looked at him.
"Kaiser Storm."
"Step forward."
Kaiser calmly walked to the center of the magic formation.
The Holy Master opened the ancient book once more.
Golden pages flipped on their own.
He raised his hand toward Kaiser.
"By the blessings of the Ten Great Gods..."
"May the path destined for this child be revealed."
The book burst into brilliant light.
The ten divine magic circles appeared around Kaiser one after another.
Unlike the previous awakenings, all ten circles shone with equal brilliance.
The villagers watched in surprise.
"I’ve never seen all ten circles shine like that before."
"What’s happening?"
Even the Holy Master’s expression became serious.
The ten circles began rotating faster and faster.
A pillar of divine light descended from the sky and completely engulfed Kaiser.
The entire village square fell silent.
Several seconds later, the light slowly faded.
At that exact moment, a system notification appeared before Kaiser alone.
[Congratulations!]
[You have successfully awakened.]
[You have obtained the Divine Mark: Mark of the Tomb.]
[Classification: Necromancy Path.]
[Your awakened Talent is being generated.]
[Calculating compatibility between Divine Mark and original Talent...]
[Calculation Complete.]
[Congratulations!]
[You have awakened the SS-Rank Talent: Flames of the Soulless.]
A surge of strange power spread throughout Kaiser’s body.
He could feel countless fragments of unfamiliar knowledge flowing into his mind.
It was as if he had instinctively learned how to control a completely new kind of flame.
At the same time, a dark gray Divine Mark slowly appeared on the back of his right hand.
The mark resembled an ancient tomb surrounded by ghostly flames.
The Holy Master stared at it in shock.
His calm expression disappeared for the first time since the ceremony had begun.
"A Necromancy Divine Mark..."
He looked at Kaiser with disbelief.
"And not just any Necromancy Mark..."
"This is the legendary..."
"Mark of the Tomb."
"I guess this trial is really going to be smooth," Kaiser muttered with a smile.
The very next second, the smile disappeared from his face.
The Holy Master’s expression turned ice cold.
His warm smile vanished completely.
He raised his hand and shouted,
"Capture this heretic!"
"Throw him into prison!"
"He is to be executed immediately!"
A terrifying golden aura erupted from his body.
Holy Light flooded the entire village square, and an overwhelming pressure descended upon Kaiser.
His legs nearly gave out beneath the weight.
...Or not.
Kaiser cursed inwardly.
Of course the Nightmare Trial wouldn’t be this easy.
The villagers froze in shock.
"What?"
"A heretic?"
"How is that possible?"
Before anyone could react further, a burst of black flames erupted in front of Kaiser.
Boom!
A woman appeared between him and the Holy Master, effortlessly blocking the pressure.
She was breathtakingly beautiful.
She wore a long black dress decorated with silver patterns, and black flames danced around her body.
Her crimson eyes calmly met the priest’s furious gaze.
Kaiser looked at her in surprise.
"Who...?"
The Holy Master’s face twisted with rage.
"Witch of Death!"
"Rihanna!"
"How dare you show yourself before me!"
The woman merely smiled.
"I’ll play with you another time, old fool."
Without waiting for a reply, she grabbed the stunned Kaiser by the shoulder.
Black flames exploded around them.
Boom!
The two instantly disappeared.
"Stop them!"
Priest Theodore roared.
Countless spears of Holy Light shot toward the retreating flames.
Unfortunately, they struck nothing but empty air.
The Witch of Death had already escaped.
Priest Theodore’s face became even darker.
He turned toward the villagers.
"Who were that child’s parents?"
"They must be punished for bringing such a calamity into this world!"
Village Chief Edward stepped forward.
"He is an orphan."
"His parents died several years ago while protecting this village from monsters."
Edward hesitated before asking,
"But... why call him a calamity?"
"Isn’t the God of Death one of the Ten Great Gods?"
Priest Theodore snorted coldly.
"The God of Death?"
"Do not compare that fallen god to our glorious Goddess of Light."
His voice was filled with contempt.
"The Mark of the Tomb is a cursed Divine Mark."
"It produces Necromancers."
"Every one of them commands the dead and spreads death wherever they go."
"They are enemies of the Holy Church."
Edward finally understood.
If Kaiser had awakened almost any other Divine Mark, the priest would probably have ignored him.
But the Mark of the Tomb was different.
It was one of the rarest Necromancy Divine Marks in existence.
To the Church of Light, it represented everything they despised.
Whether it was fear, hatred, or jealousy, Priest Theodore had already decided Kaiser’s fate the moment that mark appeared.
Priest Theodore glared in the direction where Kaiser had disappeared.
His expression remained dark.
No one dared to speak.
The entire village square fell into complete silence.
After a long moment, Priest Theodore snorted and turned around.
"Hmph."
"I will report this matter to the Church."
"That heretic will not escape for long."
With that, he closed his holy book and walked away.
