Chapter 9: 9: Destruction Of The Whitemane Barony
As the door slammed shut behind Roderic, he could hear the violent screams tremble through the walls.
’Seems like she isn’t all that happy,’ he thought, smirking. ’Well... sucks for her!’
’’Shall we go?’’ he asked, glancing at Edmund.
Edmund immediately snapped out of his daze and nodded.
As they walked, Roderic’s mind slowly wandered back to his stepmother, Margaret.
He’d never been on good terms with her, and neither had his elder siblings.
Right after their mother passed away, she came in like a homewrecker, ridding the house of as many old belongings and keepsakes as possible.
She’d even stolen the mage tower position that had always been reserved for his elder sister for her own family, demanding it as part of her marriage dowry.
’After that, my siblings left...’ he thought, letting out a small sigh. ’That just left the old Roderic as her primary target.’
It was a sad situation, but not anything uncommon in this world or his last.
His thoughts gradually shifted away from Margaret. Instead, they returned to Arthur’s decision.
’The Southern Forest...’ he thought, nodding to himself. ’The old man certainly is interesting.’
A far more severe punishment, such as jail time, was what he’d expected.
Instead, Arthur had simply sent him away to the nearby forest.
’Granted, that’s dangerous enough for ordinary people,’ he thought, smiling. ’But for me... that’s almost a reward!’
It’d give him plenty of time to sort himself and the system out while also allowing him to learn some common survival skills.
Hell, he could even train an actual sword technique, all without someone keeping tabs on him.
’He definitely knew about my aura seal,’ Roderic thought, shaking his head lightly. ’It was obvious from the way he looked at me.’
It wasn’t like he’d expected anything else either.
A knight with three aura seals should be able to notice that much after all.
’I’ll definitely have to stay a bit more careful in the future,’ he thought. ’Sudden kindness after years of indifference is quite the warning sign.’
Just then, Edmund suddenly slowed his pace.
’’Young master,’’ he said respectfully. ’’We’ve arrived.’’
Roderic raised his head.
He’d already arrived back in front of the door to his own room.
’’Thank you,’’ he said, glancing back at Edmund. ’’Also, prepare some basic survival items before tomorrow morning.’’
Edmund stared at him strangely for a split second.
Then his professional and polite expression returned.
’’Survival supplies?’’ he asked. ’’May I ask where you’ll be going?’’
A large grin spread across Roderic’s face.
’’I’ll be staying in the Southern Forest for around two weeks.’’
Edmund’s eyes went wide immediately.
’’Young master! That’s way too dangerous!’’ he said, his professional composure cracking. ’’I’ll go beg the master for a different punishment right now!’’
Roderic couldn’t help but chuckle.
’’Relax,’’ he said, waving a hand dismissively. ’’I’ll be fine out there.’’
Edmund stared at Roderic for several long seconds.
’’But, young master... there are magical beasts in that forest,’’ he said, his voice low. ’’Besides, you don’t know how to make a fire, cook meat, or build shelter...’’
As he continued rattling off basic survival skills, Roderic couldn’t help but scratch his head embarrassedly.
By the time Edmund stopped, he was completely out of breath.
With a large smile, Roderic placed a hand on the exhausted Edmund’s shoulder.
’’Trust me,’’ he said. ’’I’ll be fine.’’
’’Besides, father has already made his decision. We both know there’s no changing that now.’’
Edmund stared up at Roderic, his eyes wide and filled with worry.
But after having served Arthur for decades, he knew Roderic was right.
’’Very well,’’ he said, letting out a long, helpless sigh. ’’I’ll personally start preparing the finest tools and clothes right away!’’
Roderic’s smile almost couldn’t grow any wider.
’’I appreciate it, Edmund.’’
Nodding firmly, Edmund turned around and scurried away with a determined expression on his face.
Only after he’d completely vanished from sight did Roderic close his door behind him.
’Truly a golden man,’ he thought warmly. ’The only person who’s stood by my side through thick and thin.’
One day, he’d pay him back a hundredfold!
Roderic slowly made his way over to his bed before sitting down with a tired sigh.
The room fell completely silent around him, allowing his churning mind to take over.
As his thoughts started wandering, he quickly shook his head, forcing himself to concentrate.
’’I need a good distraction,’’ he muttered, raising his head.
’’System,’’ he called out quietly.
A familiar blue window immediately popped up in front of him.

His gaze lingered on the Shop option for a moment, wishing to explore it further.
’Later,’ he thought.
As tempting as the auction and shop had been, there was another option that had piqued his curiosity from the very beginning.
’Archive...’ he thought quietly. ’I wonder what the system is storing in there.’
Without another thought, he pressed it.
A small system window immediately appeared in front of him.
[The World Archive stores information regarding all major and minor events from Years 445 to 455.]
Roderic stared at the window, a frown slowly appearing on his face.
He read through the same message again, making sure he’d read it correctly.
Then a strange feeling began to creep into his mind.
’Isn’t it... only the year 445 right now?’
As he stared at the message, his heartbeat gradually began to speed up.
’Then... what does it mean by the current year 455?’
Roderic swallowed subconsciously.
His mind wandered back to the first quest he’d gotten... and the reason he’d gotten the quest.
It wouldn’t be like that, right?
For a brief moment, his gaze left the system screen.
’No,’ he thought. ’That can’t be right.’
’It must be another one of those system glitches.’
There was only one way to find out if this function worked... properly.
Without hesitation, he swiped the smaller system screen away.
Before he could react, a massive system screen nearly twice his height materialized in front of him.

Roderic took a step back, taken by surprise by its sheer size.
Every single year the system had mentioned was there.
Not to mention, it even had a built-in search option to make everything easier.
’If this is what I think it is...’ he thought, his heart pounding.
’’System,’’ Roderic called out nervously. ’’Could you search for the Whitemane Barony?’’

Only a few seconds ticked by before the massive window had been filled with text.
Yet, at the center of it all, Roderic saw only one thing.
’’Destruction of the Whitemane Barony (Years 445–449).’’
