Chapter 38: 38: Unexpected Wealth!
For several seconds, Roderic simply stood there.
His chest rose and fell heavily as blood continued dripping from both hooked blades.
Only now, with the battle finally over, did the adrenaline begin to fade.
Almost immediately, a sharp pain shot through his ribs while a numb feeling spread around his shoulder.
’’Tch.’’
Roderic frowned as he pressed a hand against his side before quickly pulling it away again.
’Definitely fractured, maybe broken,’ he concluded.
As for the gash on his shoulder? It was just a flesh wound.
If he disinfected it in time, it’d probably be healed by the next day, just like last time.
Roderic forced the pain out of his mind, slowly glancing around the place.
Several corpses lay scattered over the floor, tons of furniture had been shattered into pieces, and the drunk / high customers still huddled in the tavern’s corners.
Suddenly, Roderic’s head stopped moving.
In front of him, a thug stared at him with terrified eyes.
The man sat in the furthest corner away from him and was trembling violently.
Yet, Roderic hadn’t forgotten who he was.
’The one who ran away earlier,’ he thought coldly. ’I still have some use for you.’
Just then, the man slowly opened his mouth.
’’P-please...’’
He crawled forward slightly, tears filling his eyes.
Roderic immediately pointed one of his blades toward him.
’’Stay,’’ he commanded coldly.
The man’s body stiffened on the spot.
’’P-please, d-don’t kill me...’’ he begged, stuttering immensely. ’’I-I have a f-family!’’
Roderic ignored the words completely.
’’Move even a single step,’’ he said, his voice even colder. ’’And I’ll slice your head off.’’
The thug immediately nodded repeatedly.
’’I-I won’t!’’
Roderic remained silent for a few long seconds before letting out a scoff.
Without another thought, he turned toward the entrance.
’’Frederic,’’ he called out.
Silence fell for a moment.
A few seconds later, a blond young man peeked around the corner worriedly.
’’Is it over...?’’ Frederic asked cautiously.
That’s when his eyes began wandering through the tavern.
The moment they landed on the dozens of corpses, every bit of color disappeared from his face.
’’Urgh...’’
Frederic immediately covered his mouth, barely managing to stop himself from throwing up.
Roderic walked over without saying anything.
’’Watch him for me,’’ he said, pointing inside.
Looking at the trembling thug, Frederic swallowed nervously.
’’Are you... sure?’’ he asked.
Roderic nodded without another thought.
’’Pull the spear out of that corpse,’’ he said calmly. ’’If he runs, I need you to kill him.’’
Frederic’s mouth fell open slightly.
His gaze wandered to the corpses before landing on the spear stuck inside one of them.
Swallowing nervously once more, he finally nodded.
’’I will try my best,’’ he said, clenching his fists.
Roderic didn’t waste another second.
He walked straight to the cashier’s desk where the hidden trapdoor still stood open.
A cold breeze flowed out from the darkness below, making his eyes narrow.
’Although I doubt it,’ he thought slowly. ’There could be more down there.’
Regardless of how injured or low on aura he was, the mission needed to finish now.
If there were people alive inside and they escaped because he wasn’t there...
He might never find them again, which would permanently keep the mission open.
’Besides,’ he thought, gripping his blades tightly. ’I really need that poison resistance now.’
The pain from his wounds had slowly started numbing, clearly warning him that the drugs in the air were setting in.
Gritting his teeth, Roderic slowly began descending the wooden ladder.
Before long, faint lights began appearing beneath him while soft voices rang out.
As he reached the bottom, Roderic immediately turned to find a long tunnel.
’Far bigger than I’d expected,’ he thought, his guard raised. ’Let’s see what’s in this tunnel...’
Roderic slowly began making his way down the tunnel.
Only a few oil lamps hung from the walls, their flickering flames casting large shadows across the dirt and stone walls.
The first chamber soon appeared on his left.
Inside, dozens of sacks filled with dried herbs had been neatly stacked against the walls alongside many other ingredients.
Roderic only gave it a quick glance before continuing on.
A few meters farther, another room came into view.
Several large, open wooden boxes stood inside the room, filled to the brim with bronze, silver, and gold coins.
’Holy shit...’ Roderic thought, his eyes wide. ’He wasn’t kidding about the fortune!’
Even from the doorway, he could easily tell there were tens of thousands of coins stored inside.
’That can’t just be from this village,’ he thought, shocked. ’This is more like what our barony makes in a year!’
But despite the temptation, he didn’t step inside.
The voices at the end of the tunnel were far more important after all.
’I’ll let that get picked up later though,’ he thought, smiling faintly. ’It looks like more than enough to finance both traps and my personal force.’
He hadn’t thought about these gains in the slightest beforehand.
But there was no way in hell he’d decline them now!
As he continued down the tunnel, the voices grew louder and louder.
Before long, the tunnel opened into one final chamber, far larger than the other two combined.
Several long wooden tables filled the room from wall to wall.
Clay bowls, glass bottles, mortars, pestles, strange powders, and bundles of herbs were scattered across every surface.
The entire chamber had a similar, but far more potent, smell than the tavern, making Roderic instinctively wrinkle his nose.
’So this is where they make it...’ he thought in disgust.
Three ordinary men wearing stained work clothes froze the instant they noticed him standing in the doorway.
Their gazes slowly dropped to the blood covering Roderic’s body.
One by one, their faces turned pale as they dropped whatever they were holding.
’’W-Where’s Master Gareth...?’’ one asked weakly.
Roderic remained deathly silent.
The three workers looked at each other before all color drained from their faces.
Without another word, they immediately fell to their knees.
’’P-please spare us!’’
