Chapter 37: Bait To Kill!
Chapter 37: 37: Bait To Kill!
The bearded man slowly lowered himself into a proper stance.
Compared to the thugs from before, he was far calmer and more precise.
’’I’ll give you one last chance,’’ the bearded man said.
Roderic merely tightened his grip around both hooked blades.
The man’s expression turned ice cold.
’’Suit yourself.’’
CRACK!
Blue aura wrapped itself around the man’s feet as he dashed forward.
Roderic’s eyes widened slightly.
’Fast!’
The distance between them disappeared almost instantly.
SHING!
The man’s longsword shot through the air, stabbing straight toward Roderic’s neck.
Roderic immediately crossed both hooked blades in front of him, catching the strike just in time.
CLANG!
Sparks flew in every direction as the blades collided.
A faint smirk appeared on the bearded man’s face instantly.
’’Too open.’’
Before Roderic could react, the man twisted his hips.
BOOM!
His aura-covered boot slammed straight into Roderic’s stomach.
’’UGH!’’
Roderic’s feet left the ground as he was launched back several meters.
THUD!
He smashed through one of the tavern’s wooden tables before rolling across the floor.
Pain shot through his already injured ribs.
’Damn it!’ he thought, forcing himself back onto one knee.
Roderic had barely managed to regain his footing when the bearded man was already moving again.
The man rapidly closed the distance, the wooden floor splintering beneath his feet with each step.
SHING!
His longsword slashed horizontally toward Roderic’s waist.
Roderic immediately sprang back.
The longsword swung by, missing him by mere inches.
But before he could create any distance, the bearded man’s wrist suddenly moved unnaturally.
Without losing momentum, the slash flowed naturally into a lightning-fast thrust.
’Technique!’ Roderic thought, immediately slashing his hooked blade toward it.
CLANG!
He barely managed to knock the blade aside.
’’Oho?’’ the bearded man said, smirking as he pulled his longsword back. ’’Didn’t think you’d block that.’’
Roderic clenched his jaw.
Creating some distance between them, his mind began churning.
’He can chain his attacks,’ he thought. ’But there has to be a limit to that.’
So far, the man had only chained two. That didn’t mean there couldn’t be more, though.
’I need to keep my guard up and hook his sword when he doesn’t expect it.’
There was one way to trick an overconfident opponent. Something Roderic had relied on countless times back on Earth.
’Make him think he’s in full control.’
The more dominant someone believed they were, the more carelessly they fought.
Roderic slowly lowered both his blades into a defensive stance.
A faint smile immediately appeared on the bearded man’s face.
’’Giving up on attacking already?’’ he asked mockingly. ’’Are you waiting on the guards to come or something?’’
The man let out a loud scoff as he shook his head.
’’They won’t come,’’ he continued. ’’I’ve long paid them enough for scenarios like these.’’
Roderic remained completely silent.
Getting no reaction from Roderic, the bearded man simply scoffed again as aura gathered around his feet.
CRACK!
He kicked off the ground, rapidly closing the distance.
SHING!
His longsword jabbed straight toward Roderic’s shoulder.
Roderic raised one hooked blade, knocking the thrust aside.
The bearded man’s feet shot to the left, gathering more momentum to chain straight into a slash toward Roderic’s throat.
But Roderic had already expected it.
His second blade was there just in time to knock the longsword away.
Clicking his tongue, the bearded man pulled back for a moment.
Without giving Roderic even a second, the man kicked up a broken wooden table toward him.
CRACK!
Several large planks flew toward Roderic.
Roderic gritted his teeth, hacking the large pieces apart with his blades.
But that brief distraction was all the bearded man needed.
He swung his longsword horizontally toward Roderic’s shoulder.
’Fuck,’ Roderic thought, just barely getting a blade there in time.
CLANG!
The slash softly clanged against his blade before immediately flowing into a jab.
With no second blade there, Roderic forced his body to tilt aside as much as possible.
SHHNG!
The longsword sliced deep into the side of his shoulder.
Gritting his teeth, Roderic forced the pain out of his mind as he knocked the longsword away.
’My arm still works,’ he thought quickly.
The bearded man’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Instead of retreating, he made full use of Roderic’s awkward stance.
THUD!
His shoulder slammed into Roderic’s chest.
Roderic stumbled back two steps, his injured ribs screaming in pain.
’’You’re barely hanging on,’’ the man mocked.
He kept talking as he swung his longsword toward Roderic.
’’It isn’t something to be ashamed of though,’’ he continued cockily. ’’I used to be a proper knight for the Ironheart Viscounty after all.’’
CLANG!
His longsword slammed into Roderic’s blade.
’’Hell, I’m surprised you lasted this long though,’’ the man continued as his strike flowed into a stab. ’’Not many nobles your age would be able to.’’
CLANG!
Roderic knocked away the stab with his second hooked blade.
His expression changed slightly as the impact sent another sharp pain through his wounded shoulder.
The bearded man noticed and laughed loudly.
’’I’ll finish you off now,’’ he said, aura flaring brighter around his sword. ’’Remember, don’t regret your choice, even in your last moments.’’
The sword slashed through the air faster than before.
CLANG!
Roderic nearly lost his balance from the impact.
The bearded man’s wrist moved unnaturally once more.
’A thrust,’ Roderic thought, smashing the sword away.
That was when the man stepped in with a wide grin, his wrist moving unnaturally once more.
Roderic’s eyes lit up at the same time.
’Three chained attacks,’ he thought. ’But you overcommitted.’
The bearded man stepped in confidently, completely convinced Roderic was overwhelmed.
Instead of retreating, Roderic shot forward.
Both hooked blades locked around the incoming longsword as his aura flared up in a bright golden color.
’Weapon Breaker.’
The bearded man’s confident smile disappeared instantly.
’’What—’’
CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!
Hundreds of fractures spread across his blade in an instant.
The bearded man’s expression turned pale.
’’Impossible!’’
BOOM!
His sword exploded into countless pieces.
Roderic clenched his jaw and stepped in once more.
The bearded man raised both forearms in front of him as a shield, purely on instinct.
SHHK!
’’AAAAGH!’’
Both his arms separated cleanly from the rest of his body.
The bearded man staggered back several steps, blood pouring from his body.
He stared at Roderic with pure disbelief.
’’Y... you...!’’
SHHK!
Roderic’s hooked blade swept cleanly across the man’s neck.
The bearded man’s eyes remained wide with disbelief as his head slowly slid from his shoulders.
THUD!
His body collapsed beside his severed arms and head.
