Chapter 39: 39: Execution

’’P-please spare us!’’ one of the workers cried, repeatedly bowing his head.

’’W-we’re only hired to prepare the ingredients,’’ another shouted desperately. ’’We don’t even leave this place!’’

The third man remained on his knees, his eyes closed as if already accepting the outcome.

Roderic quietly observed the three of them.

’They don’t have any aura,’ he thought, his eyes narrowing. ’They’re just ordinary men...’

After a moment of silence, he nodded once to himself.

’’Stand up,’’ he ordered.

The workers looked at each other uncertainly before slowly obeying.

’’All of you,’’ Roderic continued, ’’climb upstairs.’’

’’Y-yes, sir!’’

None of them dared to hesitate.

They hurried past Roderic immediately, heading straight through the tunnel.

Roderic glanced around the production chamber one final time.

’They’ve been doing this for a while...’ he thought slowly. ’I’m glad I get to burn it down to the ground.’

With that, he turned around and began making his way down the tunnel.

Just as he reached the ladder back up to the tavern, a loud scream echoed out above.

’’ARGH!’’

Roderic frowned deeply and hurried up the ladder.

The moment his head emerged above the floor, he immediately spotted the scene.

One of the workers lay on the ground near the door, a spear buried deep in his chest.

Blood rapidly spread across the wooden floor beneath him, forming a large puddle.

Frederic stood over the man, both hands tightly gripping the spear.

As he noticed Roderic, he quickly let go, his entire body trembling.

’’H-he...’’ Frederic stammered, his face pale. ’’He suddenly started running... I thought he was escaping.’’

After saying that, Frederic immediately held a hand over his mouth, gagging.

Roderic stared quietly at the young man, very surprised by the scene.

’I hadn’t expected him to actually kill someone,’ he thought. ’But you know what...’

A faint smile appeared on his face.

’’You did good,’’ he said, nodding calmly. ’’You followed my orders perfectly.’’

Frederic nodded despite still gagging.

Roderic then looked at the other two workers and the thug, his smile disappearing.

’’Don’t make the same mistake,’’ he said coldly. ’’Or you’ll end up just like him.’’

All of them nodded frantically.

’’Now, I have a task for you all,’’ he said slowly.

Roderic pointed one of his hooked blades toward the corpses scattered across the ground.

Without even giving them the chance to respond, he continued.

"Drag every one of these corpses outside,’’ he ordered. ’’And take the tall wooden spikes too.’’

The expressions of the three men instantly stiffened.

They slowly glanced at the corpses inside the tavern, their expressions paling.

One of the workers turned away, vomiting at the mere thought.

But seeing Roderic’s cold gaze, none dared to refuse.

They immediately began dragging corpses, body parts, and broken wooden planks outside.

Roderic didn’t bother watching them.

As he turned around slightly, a wave of dizziness washed over him.

For a moment, the walls around him began turning purple while the world spun.

’’Tch...’’

Then the effects disappeared again.

’It’s getting worse,’ he thought bitterly. ’But luckily this shit is almost over...’

As the final corpses were dragged outside, Roderic followed after the men.

The sun hung low in the sky, shining bright sunlight straight into his eyes.

Just as another wave of dizziness was about to set in, Roderic bit down firmly on his bottom lip.

’Not now,’ he thought.

Roderic turned to the corpses piled up beside the tavern, a puddle of blood already beneath them.

By now, dozens of villagers had gathered at a distance.

They whispered amongst themselves while nervously staring at the gruesome pile of bodies.

Without another thought, Roderic picked up the bearded man’s head and a large wooden spike.

THUNK!

The wooden spike pierced deep into the man’s skull.

The surrounding villagers watched on in pure horror as he planted the stake firmly into the ground.

’’Continue,’’ Roderic then said. ’’Every single one of them.’’

The remaining two workers and the thug stared at him in disbelief.

Their gazes slowly shifted from the severed head... to the remaining corpses.

’’N-no...’’ one of them muttered, his lips trembling.

Roderic merely looked at him.

’’Do it.’’

The worker’s legs nearly gave out beneath him.

Yet under Roderic’s cold gaze, neither of them dared refuse.

And before long... a row of bloodstained stakes stood outside the tavern.

Roderic slowly walked in front of them, feeling dizzier than ever.

’’Look at them carefully,’’ he said, staring at the villagers. ’’These people were poisoning you with illegal drugs.’’

’’And this is, and will forever be, the fate of those who poison the people of House Whitemane.’’

He paused for a moment.

’’If any of you discover a place like this in the future,’’ he continued coldly. ’’Report it immediately. You’ll be rewarded greatly if you do.’’

Silence fell throughout the crowd.

Nobody dared utter a single word.

Only then did Roderic slowly turn around, his gaze landing on the last thug.

The man’s eyes slowly widened as Roderic pulled out a blade.

His entire body trembled uncontrollably as tears streamed down his face.

’’P-please...’’ he whimpered. ’’I-I’ll tell you everything...’’

Roderic slowly walked toward him.

’’This man is the final member of those poisoning you,’’ he said loudly. ’’And his fate shall be exactly like the others.’’

The thug’s face turned deathly pale.

’’No—’’

SHHK!

The thug’s head rolled across the dirt, only coming to a stop below the wooden stakes.

His body collapsed a moment later.

’’I hope my warning was clear,’’ Roderic said, wiping the blood from his blade.

Just then, a blue screen flashed in front of him.

[Territorial Quest complete!]

[Would you like to claim the rewards now?]

[Yes / No]

Roderic’s eyes lit up.

Without another thought, he tapped the ’Yes’ button.

[Granting rewards now...]

Roderic’s eyes widened as he felt the dizziness drain out of his body.

But at the same time, the pain the drugs had been numbing set in once more.

’’Fuck,’’ he cursed quietly.

He pressed a hand against his ribs before letting out a small sigh.

’At least I’m not drugged anymore,’ he thought, sheathing his blades.

Roderic turned toward the pale Frederic.

’’Come on,’’ he said. ’’Let’s leave.’’

Just as he took his first few steps, a loud voice echoed out on his right.

’’Clear out! Everyone clear out!’’

Roderic slowly turned around.

A squad of knights was rapidly approaching, their commander already staring at the blood-soaked tavern with a dark expression.

’’Young Master Roderic...’’ he called out angrily. ’’What is the meaning of all this?’’
