Chapter 33: 33: Time To Act

Roderic’s eyes lingered on the blue screen for several long seconds.

’A territory quest...?’

Ever since obtaining the system, the Territory tab had remained completely empty.

Yet now, it had suddenly activated.

’The drugs problem was what triggered it,’ he thought, narrowing his eyes. ’But only now? After it’s already spread through the village?’

Roderic couldn’t explain why it had popped up all of a sudden.

But it didn’t matter to him at the moment either.

’I was planning to fuck over whoever was making these drugs either way,’ he thought, dismissing the screen. ’But I’ll gladly take these rewards at the same time.’

Permanently unlocking the Territory panel was nice, just like the five hundred throne coins.

But the minor poison resistance was what truly stole the show for him.

’What a nice system,’ he thought, smiling for a second.

Just then, Frederic gradually began slowing down.

’’We’re here,’’ he said, glancing back.

He pushed through a broken wooden fence leading to a small wooden cottage.

Several roof tiles had fallen away, one of the windows had been patched together with random planks, and a small, withered vegetable garden sat outside.

Frederic ignored everything and pushed open his door.

’’Lena,’’ he called softly. ’’I’m back.’’

Light footsteps echoed from inside.

Only a moment later, a little girl with short blond hair hurried into the room carrying a bucket of water.

She didn’t seem to be older than twelve yet. Her clothes were worn, and huge dark circles surrounded her eyes.

’’Brother!’’ she shouted, her face lighting up.

The smile only lasted a second before she noticed Roderic and Edmund standing behind him.

A hint of fear flashed through her eyes as she instinctively took a step back.

’’Who... are they?’’ she asked, pointing at them.

Frederic smiled as he crouched down beside her.

’’They’re here to help us,’’ he said, brushing a hand through her hair.

The little girl stared blankly at him.

’’R-Really?’’ she stuttered.

Frederic nodded once.

That’s when Roderic finally stepped forward.

’’May we see her?’’ he asked the little girl.

After a brief moment of hesitation, the girl quickly stepped aside.

Roderic smiled slightly for a moment.

Seeing her like that brought back plenty of memories from his own youth back on Earth.

’’Thank you,’’ he said lightly before nodding his head.

The moment he entered the small bedroom, a foul smell of sickness mixed with sweat entered his nose.

And thanks to his enhanced senses, it was utter torture for him!

Even so, Roderic didn’t hesitate to continue further inside for even a moment.

As his gaze landed on the figure lying on the bed, he couldn’t help but narrow his eyes.

Large red rashes alongside large swollen bumps covered her face, while countless scratch marks covered both her arms as if she’d clawed at her own skin for days.

Every few seconds, a hoarse, strained breath left her mouth.

’What the hell... is this?’ he thought, unsure what to even say. ’Is this what a normal allergic reaction is supposed to look like?’

For a moment, he just stood there.

Then sudden movement snapped him out of his thoughts.

Beside him, Lena quietly dipped another cloth into the bucket before placing it against her mother’s forehead.

It was obvious she’d been doing this for days, if not weeks!

Frederic stood just behind her, biting down on his lip hard enough to make it bleed.

After several more seconds, Roderic turned around.

’’I’ve seen enough,’’ he said coldly.

With that, he began making his way back outside.

Frederic exchanged a quick glance with Edmund before following after him.

The moment the three stepped outside, Roderic’s expression had turned colder than ever.

’’Edmund,’’ he called out as he turned around.

Edmund halted in his steps.

’’Yes, Young Master?’’

’’Take Frederic’s family back to the manor,’’ Roderic continued. ’’We’ll discuss everything else later.’’

Frederic froze for a moment.

’’Y-young master...?’’ he stammered.

Roderic didn’t even hesitate, interrupting him before he could ask any questions.

’’Our physicians are far better than anything this village can offer,’’ he said. ’’I’ll personally make sure your mother receives the best treatment available.’’

For the first time since meeting him, Frederic’s eyes became visibly moist.

Roderic turned back to Edmund without even looking at him.

’’Once you’ve settled them, I want you to return with some knights tomorrow morning,’’ he commanded.

A small frown appeared on Edmund’s face.

’’Young Master... are you planning to remain here overnight?’’ he asked worriedly.

’’Yes.’’

Roderic calmly placed his hands on the hilts of his hooked blades.

’’I plan to take care of the main problem in that time.’’

Edmund opened his mouth to object.

Yet after seeing Roderic’s expression, he quietly swallowed his words.

’’Understood.’’

Without another word, Edmund bowed slightly before heading back in the carriage’s direction.

Roderic finally glanced back at Frederic.

’’Now tell me,’’ he said coldly. ’’Where does everyone buy this powder?’’

Rubbing his eyes once, Frederic stared back at Roderic with determined eyes.

’’I can take you there,’’ he replied firmly.

A cold smile appeared on Roderic’s face.

’’Good,’’ he said. ’’Let’s pay them a visit.’’
