Chapter 32: 32: Drug-filled Village And Territory Quest?!
Roderic frowned slightly.
’’Your mother?’’ he repeated.
The archive hadn’t mentioned anything about his mother being sick.
Frederic only nodded as he bit down on his bottom lip.
He glanced up at Roderic with fierce eyes before forcing himself to continue.
’’It isn’t an actual sickness,’’ he said, clenching his fists. ’’According to the physicians, she suffered a severe allergic reaction.’’
Roderic remained silent for a moment.
’’To what?’’ he finally asked, raising an eyebrow.
Frederic glanced down at the ground, his expression only growing darker.
’’A strange powder,’’ he said quietly. ’’One of our neighbors offered to let her smoke some.’’
He fell silent for a moment, biting down on his lip once more.
’’She refused but still smelled a little whiff... and a few hours later she was bedridden.’’
Beside him, Walter clicked his tongue while nodding slowly.
Roderic turned toward him right away.
’’Do you know more about this powder?’’
Walter’s eyes lit up, recognizing his opportunity.
’’Yes,’’ he said instantly. ’’It’s something that’s been spreading through the village like wildfire recently.’’
’’Hunters, merchants, and even farmers have started using it, whispering stories about how it made them feel like they were in heaven.’’
Walter paused for a moment, deep in thought.
’’I believe it’s gotten so bad that some sold their houses and everything they owned just to buy more. Not to mention the frequent fights involving people who were never violent before.’’
By the time he’d finished speaking, Roderic’s eyes had narrowed into thin slits.
His entire expression had darkened, feeling repulsed as he thought about it.
’No matter how I look at it,’ he thought. ’It sounds like drugs are spreading around.’
And if there was anything he hated... it was drugs.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Roderic glanced back at Frederic.
’’Take me to your mother,’’ he said coldly. ’’I wish to examine the situation.’’
Frederic looked up in surprise.
’’Young Master...?’’ he asked, shocked.
’’Lead the way,’’ Roderic simply replied.
Without another word, Frederic nodded and began walking toward the village.
Roderic and Edmund exchanged a quick glance before following after him.
Only Walter remained standing where he was before bowing lightly.
’’Good luck, Young Master,’’ he shouted. ’’If you ever need horses, I’ll provide the best ones!’’
Roderic glanced back with a forced smile and raised his hand slightly.
Minutes ticked by as Frederic led them back toward the village outskirts.
Before long, small wooden houses came into sight. Many of them looked neglected, with broken fences and overgrown gardens.
Roderic remained quiet the entire journey, his thoughts circling around drugs.
In his previous life, he’d seen the results plenty of times.
He’d even personally had to end the lives of those who’d gone as far as robbing others to afford more drugs.
’Disgusting,’ he thought, beyond irritated. ’You’re telling me those things exist in medieval times too?’
Just then, a loud crash echoed through one of the alleyways nearby.
Several different shouts quickly followed.
’’Give it back!’’
’’Get away from me!’’
Roderic turned his head just in time to see a bearded hunter stumble out into the street.
His clothes were filthy, and his eyes were completely bloodshot.
Even worse, he stumbled forward, barely managing to stay on his feet.
’’Please...’’ an elderly woman cried from behind him. ’’That’s all I have left!’’
The hunter simply laughed while scratching his head.
’’T-Then ea-rn me m-more some!’’ he stuttered.
He shoved the old woman to the ground before staggering away with a small pouch clutched in his hand.
Frederic lowered his head slightly.
’’It wasn’t like this before,’’ he muttered quietly.
Then he ran toward the elderly woman and began assisting her.
Beside Roderic, Edmund’s expression had darkened as well.
’’I’ve heard rumors about the powder,’’ he admitted. ’’I just never imagined it had become this severe.’’
Roderic said nothing.
His eyes silently followed the staggering hunter before landing on the pouch in his hands.
’This man has long lost it,’ he thought, narrowing his eyes. ’If he walks free, he’ll kill someone the next time.’
As Roderic took a step forward, the hunter slowly turned around.
His bloodshot eyes wandered over Roderic’s expensive clothes before bursting into laughter.
’’B-blessed!’’ he shouted, reaching for his knife. ’’I-I have blessed been!’’
The hunter stumbled forward while slashing his knife unsteadily.
Frederic’s expression changed immediately.
’’Young Master, watch out!’’ he shouted.
Roderic didn’t hesitate.
Regardless of who the man had been before the drugs or the possibility of curing him, he simply pulled out both hooked blades.
CLANG!
His aura-covered blades shattered the hunting knife into several pieces.
Taking another step forward, Roderic immediately slashed out once more.
WHOOSH!
The hunter’s head separated cleanly from his shoulders before he even realized what had happened.
His body staggered forward another step before collapsing heavily onto the dirt road.
’’Dirty bastard,’’ Roderic cursed, wiping the blood off his blade.
The elderly woman, Frederic, and even Edmund all froze in place.
None of them had expected it to go like this.
’’Anyone who threatens innocent civilians inside Whitemane territory,’’ Roderic continued coldly, ’’has already forfeited the right to live.’’
He picked up the small pouch filled with bronze and silver coins and tossed it back to the old lady.
Then his gaze landed back on Frederic.
’’Let’s go,’’ he said. ’’We’ve wasted enough time here.’’
Frederic glanced at the elderly woman for a moment before nodding.
’’Take good care of yourself, Granny Jo,’’ he whispered quietly.
Without another word, the group continued down the road.
The farther they got, the worse everything became.
Scuffles continuously broke out. A couple of men and women slept on the sandy road, their bodies trembling in the cold.
One person even stood in front of a wall and kept laughing to himself for no apparent reason.
Roderic’s expression grew colder with every step.
Just then, a large blue system window suddenly popped up in front of him.
