Chapter 14: 14: Mastery
Roderic stared at the cleanly severed blade for several seconds, his mouth wide agape.
Then, a large grin spread across his face.
’’Completely worth it.’’
He casually tossed aside the broken Twin Tiger Hook Blades and picked up the second Azure hook blade.
Roderic closed his eyes as his breathing began to slow down.
Waves of detailed memories flooded through his mind as a familiar sensation washed over him.
Slowly, his stance began to change.
His right foot slid back a few feet, the other remaining firmly planted on the ground.
Both Azure blades rose while his knees bent ever so slightly at the same time.
’This is the opening stance for the first move,’ Roderic thought, opening his eyes. ’Now it’s just manipulating my aura.’
Roderic slowly took in a deep breath as the inscription on his chest lit up.
Blue aura quietly began flowing through his body, coating both blades in a thin layer of blue light in no time.
’First move... Weapon Breaker.’
Both hook blades swung forward.
Only, before they had even completed half the movement, the aura had already completely scattered into tiny wisps.
Roderic slowly lowered his weapons.
’’No,’’ he said, frowning deeply. ’’That’s not right at all.’’
The way he had moved replayed over and over in his mind.
’Not only was my aura unstable,’ he thought. ’I performed the move itself like I was high on something.’
The system had shown him exactly how to perform the move.
Yet, when he actually tried to execute it himself, his muscles lagged behind or just stubbornly refused to cooperate.
It almost made him feel like he was going crazy!
’This must be the experience factor, huh,’ he thought, glancing up at the sky. ’The reason why people swing their swords ten thousand times per day.’
The more Roderic thought about it, the more he realized how unrealistic he’d been.
He honestly didn’t know what he’d expected.
Had he really believed the system would simply erase years of training?
’That wouldn’t make any sense,’ he thought, shaking his head. ’Otherwise, it might as well transfer all the power to me right away.’
He paused for a moment, raising an eyebrow as his gaze fell on the system window.
’’Would you do that, System?’’ he asked lightly.
[Request denied.]
Roderic scoffed lightly, swiping the window away.
’’I’ll just train myself then,’’ he muttered.
Without another word, he lowered himself into the proper stance and began training again.
...
Days passed by in a flash.
The first few days were rough.
He built a better camp for himself and was forced to learn how to hunt, skin, and roast smaller animals.
After that, Roderic almost mindlessly settled into the same routine.
From sunrise until long after sunset, he did nothing but train.
Only when absolutely needed did he hunt, eat, or even sleep.
And gradually, that effort started to pay off.
By the time the third day in the forest arrived, his aura had grown stable enough to last through the entire movement.
And now?
Roderic’s movements had become far smoother than before.
It was almost to the point where he could perform Weapon Breaker exactly as it had been shown inside his memories.
’Again,’ he thought, letting out a slow breath.
Blue aura instantly erupted around both blades, shining far more fiercely than before.
Roderic stepped forward.
This time, instead of imagining an enemy, he fixed his eyes on a thick tree several meters away.
’Go!’ he thought.
In his mind, the tree was no longer a tree.
It was a broad longsword, held proudly in the sky by his opponent.
Roderic moved almost instinctively.
Clang!
Both hook blades crossed in front of him, their open hooks locking around the trunk exactly as they would around an opponent’s weapon.
The blue aura flared even brighter around his blades.
CRACK!
The twin blades violently tore through the tree before returning to his side.
For a brief second, nothing happened.
’Hm?’ Roderic thought, glancing behind him.
Creeeaak...
The enormous tree slowly began toppling toward him.
’’Oh,’’ he muttered, jumping forward.
BOOM!
The massive trunk slammed into the ground where he’d been standing only a heartbeat earlier, kicking up dirt and leaves everywhere.
Silence filled the forest as even the bugs had fallen silent.
Roderic stared at the fallen tree, slowly nodding his head.
’’Nice,’’ he muttered. ’’Some more firewood.’’
That wasn’t the only thing he thought about, though.
His gaze had long since moved to the broken bark and wood where his blades had passed.
’If that were a knight’s head,’ he thought slowly, ’he would’ve died instantly too, right?’
With a small grin, he cut off a few branches before walking back toward his campsite.
It didn’t take long before a small makeshift tent made of branches, leaves, and mud came into view.
A campfire stood outside the tent, already heating a blackened metal pot with water and meat inside.
After Roderic tossed a few more branches onto the fire, he turned toward the last bit of rabbit meat inside the pot.
’’Looking good,’’ he muttered, nodding. ’’But I’ll definitely need to hunt again tomorrow.’’
It wasn’t ideal to have no meat in stock.
But he’d been so close to mastering the move that leaving had simply felt like a waste.
As Roderic began digging into his stew, his gaze couldn’t help but fall on the forest around him.
’I should hunt something stronger tomorrow,’ he thought. ’A magical beast should be quite the challenge.’
If he wanted to improve both his aura control and his combat instincts, those challenging opponents were a must-have.
’Really wonder what they have to offer,’ he thought, smiling widely. ’Since they are the only opponents in here, they’d better be good...’
Unbeknownst to Roderic, he wasn’t the only one roaming the forest anymore.
Several hundred meters away, a pair of cold eyes had already locked onto the smoke rising from his campfire.
The broad-shouldered man remained crouched atop a rocky ridge, his weathered cloak blending into the surrounding trees.
A massive greatsword rested on his back, while a large scar ran from the corner of his left eye to his jaw.
His gaze lingered on the thin trail of smoke before a rough chuckle escaped his lips.
"Found you."
