Chapter 15: 15: Blackfang Wolf

Roderic happily walked deeper into the forest.

Every so often, he came to a halt and carved a small mark into the bark of a nearby tree.

Then he’d continue on his way, softly humming to himself.

’’Magical beast,’’ he mumbled, glancing around. ’’Where, oh where, are you?’’

The further he walked, the denser and quieter the forest around him became.

After only half an hour, the constant chirping of birds had faded away, replaced by an eerie silence.

Roderic’s smile gradually began to fade.

’Something’s different around here,’ he thought, turning serious.

His pace slowed slightly as his eyes swept through the thick green trees surrounding him.

Only a few steps later, a strange noise rang out from the bushes in front of him.

Crunch! Crunch!

Roderic’s eyes narrowed.

He carefully pulled out his Azure Hook Blades and began walking forward step by step.

Just then, the bushes began to shake violently.

Grrrrrh!

A deep growl echoed through the forest.

Roderic’s grip tightened around both blades.

’Finally,’ he thought.

Instead of backing away, a grin slowly spread across his face.

Every muscle in his body tensed as he lowered himself into a combat stance.

Slowly, the bushes began to part.

Stepping out was a massive black wolf.

Its shoulder nearly reached Roderic’s own height, while its thick muscles made it as large as a van.

Roderic couldn’t help but stare at the beast in amazement.

As it bared its teeth at him, he couldn’t help but compare them to the size of his own head.

’If that thing bites me,’ he thought, ’there’s no way it won’t go straight through.’

For a brief moment, neither side moved.

The wolf’s eyes never left Roderic for even a moment.

A low growl continued rumbling deep within its throat as its sharp claws slowly dug into the earth beneath it.

Suddenly, it lowered its body.

Roderic’s gaze sharpened instantly.

’Here it comes!’

WHOOSH!

The ground beneath the beast exploded apart.

It lunged forward in an instant, its mouth wide open.

’Fast!’

Roderic swallowed hard.

Without thinking, he twisted his body to the side.

WHOOSH!

The massive black blur flashed past him, close enough for him to feel the wind rush through his hair.

Landing a few meters away, the wolf immediately spun around.

Its body shot forward once more, a razor-sharp set of claws heading straight for him.

’Again!’

Roderic used all his strength to jump back.

The claws narrowly missed his chest, carving four deep grooves through the earth instead.

’Its strength is ridiculous!’ he thought.

Despite that, a large smile sat on his face.

The wolf immediately followed up with another claw attack.

Only this time, Roderic didn’t dodge anymore.

Blue light lit up around both Azure Hook Blades, shining brightly like a flame.

’Weapon Breaker!’

He swung both hooked swords forward.

In an instant, the blades crossed each other in an X-shape.

Both hooks wrapped around a claw on each side of its paw before bursting out in an even brighter light.

CRACK! CRACK!

A sickening sound echoed through the forest.

The wolf’s claws exploded into countless gray fragments under Roderic’s aura.

A pained howl rang out as its entire body was thrown off balance.

For a moment, Roderic thought he even saw panic flashing through its eyes.

’Doesn’t matter. Take advantage!’ he thought, pushing on.

Blue aura roughly flickered around his feet as he shot forward.

Both blades swept toward the wolf’s neck, attempting another Weapon Breaker around it.

Only... the beast’s instincts were much faster.

It forcefully twisted its body away.

Slash!

Instead of its throat, the blades carved two large gashes across its side.

Dark red blood sprayed through the air for a split second.

The wolf landed awkwardly several meters away, its injured side trembling faintly.

Blood continued dripping from the wound onto the forest floor.

Yet, even now, it refused to run.

Its emerald eyes remained fixed on Roderic, only now the earlier confidence had been replaced by caution.

Roderic slowly straightened his posture.

’Amazing...’ he thought, unable to hold back his smile. ’A fight like this would’ve been unthinkable back on Earth.’

He truly couldn’t describe how exhilarating and alive he felt.

For once, his past life, reincarnation, new family, and the upcoming war... none of it mattered.

It was just him, the wolf, and death for the one who lost.

Just then, the wolf began circling him again.

Its pace had slowed down considerably, likely as a result of its injuries.

Suddenly, it let out a low growl before jumping to the left.

Roderic instinctively changed his stance.

Only for the beast to immediately stop.

’It’s testing me,’ Roderic thought, his brows furrowing. ’How much intelligence does a creature like this have?’

Suddenly, the wolf began jumping left and right around him.

Sometimes it stopped abruptly. Other times it feinted to one side before immediately darting toward the other.

Roderic desperately tried to keep track of its movements and predict them as much as possible.

Suddenly, the beast lunged forward with its full power.

It committed every last bit of strength to this final attack.

’Now!’

Blue aura flashed around Roderic’s Azure Hook Blades.

Stepping forward, he stood directly in the wolf’s path.

The wolf opened its mouth wide, tilting its head sideways in order to bite him in half.

Roderic twisted his body, swinging both blades forward with their sharp edges.

Swish!

The blades sliced straight through its upper jaw like it was made of butter.

Only a second later, they reached its head and sliced through its brain.

THUD!

Its massive body collapsed onto the ground, half of its jaw landing just behind Roderic’s legs.

’’Almost,’’ he said, smiling.

He couldn’t help but look up at the sky, his breathing rough.

’’Man, that was fun,’’ he muttered. ’’But I definitely need more experience.’’

Just then, a familiar blue window popped up in front of him.

[You have slain a Blackfang Wolf.]

[Reward: +1 Throne Coin.]

[Current Balance: 750 Throne Coins]

Roderic’s eyes and grin widened simultaneously.

’’So that’s how to get ’em,’’ he said. ’’Isn’t that nice?’’

Swiping the window away, his gaze fell on the corpse below him.

Without wasting any further time, he carefully began removing sections of meat and fur.

’’That should last me for the remaining days,’’ he muttered, wiping the sweat from his forehead.

Slinging a large hind leg over his bag, Roderic turned around.

’’Time to head back then.’’
