Chapter 5: Angel Tells April Her Revenge Plan
Despite my suddenly broken heart, I tried my best to move quietly. I didn’t want to be caught in this situation, but the moment I turned, I walked straight into a wall.
Bump...
"Ouch!"
The word escaped my lips before I could clap a hand over my mouth, my glasses sliding crookedly down the bridge of my nose from the sudden jolt.
Oh, fuck my life...
A simple head bump and I couldn’t keep it inside.
I squeezed my eyes shut, a hot wave of pure embarrassment rushing up my neck to mix with the dull ache in my forehead.
I turned to see the two girls staring at me.
Their faces said it all.
Benny’s mouth was slightly open, her cheeks a burning crimson, while Sister Mary frantically pulled at the edges of her gray habit to straighten the fabric.
Their secret had been exposed.
Now this was an awkward situation.
I adjusted my glasses with a trembling index finger, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped animal as I searched for any escape route.
"April, what you just saw was a..." Benny tried to explain.
She took a hesitant step toward me, her arms reaching out as if she could somehow grab the words and pull them back into her mouth.
Like I said, I wasn’t ready for any awkward situation.
My mind completely panicked, shutting down any normal response before she could even finish her sentence.
"No, I did not see anything. What did I see? Nothing. Where am I? I wonder where this is..."
I started saying gibberish, my hand still on my head while looking around like I was in a foreign land.
Sister Mary tank a step forward.
The cross on her chest caught the light as she moved closer, her expression shifting into one of genuine concern.
"Ms. April, are you okay? Do you need ice on your head?"
Hell no, I’m out of here before I pass out, not from the head bump but from the heartbreak.
The tight red dress felt like a vice around my chest, cutting off my air as I backed away from them toward the main exit.
"No, no, no... there’s no need for that. Thank you for your concern."
I shook my head violently, my heels clicking unevenly against the ground as I kept up my clumsy retreat.
"You might have a concussion. Let her help you," Benny added.
She took another step, her eyes locking onto the small red mark that was already forming near my hairline.
"Concussion? No, I don’t have one. I’m completely fine."
Obviously, I think I am having one, but not in my brain... in my heart.
A cold, heavy weight settled deep into my gut, crushing every single hope I had brought into this building tonight.
I needed to leave before I made more of a fool of myself.
Every single second I stayed in this place felt like a fresh slap to my face, exposing exactly how stupid I had been.
I had been doing that since I arrived.
From the overdone makeup to the ridiculous red outfit, I had completely miscalculated everything about this night.
Without waiting for their explanation or wanting them to attend to my head...
I did not need to know why they were doing what my eyes saw.
The image of their lips pressed together was already burned into my brain, and nothing they could say would erase the sting of it.
I made a run for it, an actual run.
I turned on my heel, ignoring the sharp twinge in my ankles as I sprinted down the long corridor toward the doors.
Like someone who had been caught stealing a precious jewel.
I burst through the exit into the cool night air, my breath coming in short, ragged gasps as I fled into the shadows of the street.
The moment I got home, I was exhausted and sad.
I couldn’t believe I was crushing on someone I thought I was going to have a chance with.
I spent weeks memorizing our moments together.
Every tiny smile she gave me across the counter, every short conversation about books, I had collected them all like treasures.
I wondered what our first date would be like, what she was going to order, and what our first time holding each other’s arms and walking home together would be like.
I had built up an entire world in my head, imagining the exact lighting of the restaurant and the warmth of her fingers sliding between mine.
I even imagined what our first kiss was going to be.
Only for me to see her kiss someone who wasn’t me.
The brutal reality of the memory made me choke on a breath, a single, hot tear finally spilling over my eyelashes.
This is so fucking insane.
All those late nights reading just to match her taste and connect with her.
I had forced myself through hundreds of pages of boring, mushy stories just to have a single thing in common with her.
Wasted.
Every single bit of effort, every hour of sleep lost, completely thrown into the trash for absolutely nothing.
I had put up with Angel’s constant torment and the embarrassing sounds from her bedroom, telling myself it would all be worth it in the end.
I even kicked someone’s balls just for this night to end in nothing.
I just hope I never get to cross paths with those two again because they both broke my little heart.
I held my purse by my side as I headed inside.
I was by the pool when I realized another nightmare was waiting for my arrival.
Angel was by the poolside.
Not inside the pool, but by the edge.
She was positioned right where the deep end started, her tall frame cutting a dark silhouette against the glowing water.
She was lying flat on the ground.
bottle of beers sat by her side along with a cigarette.
While Terror was curled up beside her.
I knew she wasn’t going to be in her room.
She was waiting for me, using the quiet stillness of the backyard to trap me the second I tried to slip inside.
This girl had a thing for payback.
She never let a slight go unpunished, and what I had done to her earlier was the biggest offense yet.
It didn’t matter how long it took her.
She always got her revenge.
A heavy shiver ran down my spine, my muscles locking tight as I realized exactly how cornered I was out here by the water.
I didn’t want her drama tonight.
My mind was already completely broken from Benny, and I didn’t have the energy to fight off an angry Alpha.
I just wanted to enter my room and cry into my pillow.
I noticed her eyes were closed, so I removed my heels and tiptoed past her.
When I thought I had escaped her for tonight, that was when Terror noticed me and alerted her owner with her stupid meowing sounds.
I slowly turned my head to see Angel standing by my side.
She didn’t say anything, only stared at me.
The silence between us stretched out, heavy and cold, the only sound being the soft lapping of the pool water against the tiles.
Her eyes were unreadable.
Her gaze slowly swept over my messy hair, the smudged makeup on my face, and the tight red dress that was now damp from the night air.
Then back to my eyes.
She stepped directly into my path, cutting off the route to the back door completely, her tall frame blocking out the remaining light.
"Tomorrow, I’m calling your mom and telling her that you have successfully become a whore."
The words came out in a low, dangerous purr, her husky voice vibrating right through the small distance between our faces.
"Hey, I’m not in the mood to argue with you tonight. You want to get revenge for what I did to you earlier? Just do whatever you want and let me go to bed," I accepted my fate..
She took a step closer, and I moved backward.
Her bare feet slid forward on the concrete, her large shadow completely wrapping around my smaller frame as she pressed her advantage.
"You kicked my dragon balls."
The reminder was dropped softly, but the underlying threat in her tone made my heart skip a frantic beat against my ribs.
"I don’t regret it and... you deserved it."
I spat the words back, my chin trembling as I tried to hold onto the tiny bit of defiance I had left inside me.
"I’m really going to get you back, and it will be when you least expect it..."
She leaned down slightly, her dark red eyes narrowing as she locked her gaze onto my painted lips, her breathing steady and deep.
"Angel, just do whatever you want to do right now. You want to slap me or call my mom and tell lies?"
I threw my hands up in frustration, the heavy purse clattering against my thigh as I practically begged her to just get the punishment over with.
"No."
The single word was flat and final, shutting down my questions instantly as she kept her gaze fixed firmly on mine.
She took another step closer, and I couldn’t move because we were at the edge of the pool.
Her face was so close to mine that I could breathe in her breath.
The scent of beer and cigarette smoke mingled with her heavy, dominant Alpha pheromones, dizzying my mind and making my throat go completely dry.
"I’m going to fuck you, and you’re going to be the one begging me to fuck you so hard that you forget your own name..."
I swallowed hard after hearing those words.
A strange, terrifying heat flared up deep in my stomach, my mind racing as I tried to process the sheer intensity of what she had just said.
What kind of revenge is that?
My breath caught completely in my throat, my vision swimming behind my glasses as the ground beneath my feet suddenly felt like it was disappearing.
And then I lost my balance and fell right into the pool.
My arms flailed wildly in the air, the black heels slipping from my fingers as my body tilted backward into the glowing blue depths.
And the worst part was that I couldn’t swim.
