Chapter 4: It Wasn’t A Date
This wasn’t going to go anywhere, and I was getting late and tired of this weird conversation.
I glanced over at the phone screen, the numbers blinking at me like a countdown. The hallway was completely quiet except for our heavy breathing, and the pressure of her grip was starting to make my jaw ache.
"Let me go, Angel," I insisted.
I kept my voice flat, tightening my grip on my purse strap, staring straight into the red pool of her eyes without showing any fear.
"No, I won’t. Call the mom you wanted to..."
She didn’t even finish the sentence, her smirk widening as she leaned her weight forward to press me harder against the wall.
Okay, that’s it.
I wasn’t going to stand here and let her play these power games with me until I missed my chance at happiness entirely.
I did the unthinkable.
I used my knee and kicked her hard directly in the balls.
The impact was solid, a blunt thud that echoed off the hallway as my leg drove upward with every single ounce of strength I had.
No sound came from her, only a hard grunt that said yes, that was intense.
Her eyes instantly went wide, the crimson color flaring up for a fraction of a second before the breath completely left her lungs in a sharp gasp.
She was trying to hold the pain. She held her balls with both hands as she went down on her knees, fighting the pain.
Her broad shoulders shook as she struggled to inhale, the dominant Alpha energy completely evaporating into the cold air.
Well, she asked for it.
Acting like a dick, so I hurt hers.
I took a deep, shaking breath of my own, the sudden freedom making my chest expand as I looked down at her curled-up form.
I wanted to ask if she was okay, with the way she curled on the floor like some dying rodent, but if she got back to her feet, I’m sure I was going to be the dead rodent.
The sheer terror of what she would do once the numbness wore off kicked my legs into motion, making me scramble away from her as fast as my high heels could manage.
So I turned away, only for another obstacle to be in the way.
Terror, or as her owner calls her, Coco Terror.
The creature sat perfectly still in the center of the walkway, its tail flicking back and forth against the floor with an aggressive, steady rhythm.
An orange cat who acts like a crazy wild dog.
It didn’t look like a normal pet, its ears pinned flat against its skull as it stared right through my glasses with unblinking eyes.
"Meow!"
The sound was a sharp, grating screech that rang through the narrow space, a clear warning that I wasn’t allowed to take another step forward.
She must have witnessed what I did to her owner.
Her gaze shifted for a second toward where Angel was still groaning on the floor before locking back onto my ankles.
"Look, Terror, your owner deserves what she got. Stay out of my way if you don’t want to end up like her," I warned, but at the same time I was begging her to leave the way.
I held my purse out like a shield, my voice trembling slightly as I took a tiny, tentative step sideways toward the exit.
She kept glaring at me until Angel’s grunting brought her attention. Then she went to meet her, and I left the two of them and went to my date.
It turned out it wasn’t a date.
Benny invited me out for something different from a date night.
She wanted me to read to some orphan kids at an orphanage.
I was disappointed, not because I had to read to beautiful kids, but because Benny should have made it clear to me. She should have told me what I was doing tonight.
A heavy lump formed in my throat, all the excitement from yesterday draining out of my body in an instant as I looked down at the bright red fabric of my dress.
I dressed my best just so I could look sexy for her.
The tight hemline felt incredibly short now, and the high heels wobbled beneath me...
This was embarrassing...
The nuns in charge of the orphanage kept looking at me like some slutty bitch I wasn’t.
They say first appearances matter, and I’m sure whenever they see me anywhere in the world, they are going to remember the girl with glasses who dressed unholy to a holy orphanage.
I tried to pull the thin fabric down over my thighs, my face burning with a hot, miserable blush as the older nun clicked her tongue loudly.
I swear I would have gone home from the way they kept staring at me throughout the reading session.
I sat on a wooden stool in the center of the recreation room, the open picture book trembling in my hands as the cold glares from the doorway pierced right through me.
Even some kids laughed at my dress.
A little boy in the front row pointed at my sparkly heels, whispering something to his friend that made a group of them burst into high-pitched giggles.
After the reading, some nuns came to me asking if I needed confession, but I told them I was fine and I don’t believe in confessing to a human who isn’t God.
They stared at me like I was some alien.
Their mouths stayed slightly open, their eyebrows knitting together as if I had just spoken to them in a completely foreign language they couldn’t understand.
I do believe in God, but I don’t like telling my inner secrets to another human who claims to be close to God.
I adjusted my glasses, holding my head high despite the deep embarrassment twisting in my gut, refusing to back down from what I believed.
Why can’t I confess to God myself?
The thought kept spinning in my head, a stubborn wall of defiance that kept me from breaking down in front of their judgmental faces.
The nuns disappeared.
They swished away down the long, dim corridor, the fabric of their robes sweeping the floor with a soft, angry rustle.
Benny was around helping some kids while I was left with a young nun my age.
Sister Mary, who had a big cross chain on her neck.
The silver metal caught the light of the overhead bulbs, swinging slightly against her gray habit as she picked up a fallen crayon from the floor.
We were both tidying up the place where I had read to the kids.
We moved around the low tables in silence, the only sound being the soft stack of paper sheets and the distant chatter from the hallway.
"I’m sorry about the eyes. Sometimes people judge people by the book cover instead of what’s inside the book," she said.
Her voice was surprisingly soft, devoid of any of the harsh judgment the older women had shown me since I arrived.
I smiled at her.
A small wave of relief washed over my shoulders, the tension in my neck loosening just a fraction at her kind words.
"I’m not offended. I should have inquired about where I was coming to. That was the mistake I made," I said.
I smoothed down the front of the red dress, my fingers catching on the seam as I forced out a polite chuckle to break the awkwardness.
"They told me to inform you about meditating for seven days and fasting to be cleansed."
She looked down at her own shoes, her expression turning slightly uneasy as she delivered the message from her superiors.
"Thank you for the information."
I kept my voice light, nodding along to satisfy her, though my mind was already completely checked out of this place.
I smiled it off.
After finishing up, I was ready to leave. I was looking around, searching for Benny so I could tell her that I was leaving.
It was past ten already, and I was not ready for someone to tell my mom the opposite of what I was doing right now.
The night was slipping away fast, and the thought of the silent house waiting for me made my stomach twist into a tight, nervous knot.
That girl was going to get her revenge for what I did to her, and I needed to be prepared for whatever she was going to do.
I stopped moving when I finally saw Benny.
The hallway light shifted at the corner, throwing a long shadow against the white-washed wall of the back storage room.
I wanted to go meet her, then I saw her talking to Sister Mary.
The young nun was standing close to the doorway, her hands no longer folded in her sleeves, her face tilted up in the dim light.
Then a normal conversation turned into a romantic one.
The space between them vanished completely in a second, the heavy silver cross swinging wildly as Benny reached out to cup her face.
Benny, my crush, was kissing a nun.
