Chapter 21: Calling Angel Morningstar

Third Person POV

After April left the sex shop, the cashier watched as an Alpha followed behind her.

The cashier was a Beta, but from the way April looked, all sweaty and pale, he knew she was an Omega in heat.

Her skin had been a deep, furious pink, and her fingers had been shaking so violently when she dropped her driver’s license onto the counter that she could barely hold onto it. It was a dangerous state for anyone to be in, especially in this specific neighborhood where the dark corners were always full of trouble.

And where April happened to be was a den for Alphas.

The local bars, clubs and pool halls down the block were packed to the brim with dominant types who spent their weekends looking for any excuse to start a fight or claim some territory. A vulnerable girl walking down the sidewalk alone with that kind of scent trail was practically an open invitation for the worst kind of trouble.

"Becky..." he called out.

From inside, a strawberry blonde girl came out. She stood by the doorway.

The beaded curtain to the back room rattled loudly as she kicked it aside, her slouching posture and glazed expression showing she didn’t care about whatever was happening at the front.

"What?" the girl said, looking high as fuck with a cigarette in her mouth.

"Is Angel still in around the district?"

"Why do you ask?"

She blew another lazy circle of smoke toward the ceiling, her tone flat and completely uninterested in whatever kind of unreasonable question he was trying to build up.

"Just tell me, is she around or not?"

"I don’t know. You have her number, why don’t you fucking call that bitch?"

She dismissed the question with a rough flick of her ash, turning her back on him completely before he could even open his mouth to bark another order.

The guy brought out his phone from his back pocket.

His fingers were stiff with frustration as he unlocked the screen, his thumb scrolling past dozens of local delivery contacts and work messages to find the specific name.

"If you were not my little sister, I would have thrown you out of my life ages ago..." he muttered as he searched for Angel Morningstar’s number.

He called a few times but got no answer. Then she finally picked up.

"What do you want, Michael? If you call the first time and I don’t answer, don’t call again."

He hadn’t even put the phone to his ear properly, and she was already nagging.

He pulled the device back an inch, his jaw clenching as he listened to her dismissive breath over the line before he could even explain why he was reaching out.

He didn’t like calling Angel because she was always full of herself, and he hated her for it.

"Are you related to someone named April Morningstar?" He got straight to the point.

He kept his voice flat and perfectly professional, refusing to give her any room to start an argument or throw another insult across the cellular connection.

"I am not related to such a person. I’m hanging up now."

And Angel hung up the phone without waiting for his response.

Michael simply put the phone aside and continued attending to the customer he had been delaying.

It wasn’t up to five minutes later when he got a call back from Angel.

He picked up, even though he was dying to make her feel the pain of ignoring people’s calls. He wanted to let it ring until it went to voicemail just to push her buttons, but the image of the dangerous Alpha following the girl kept him from playing games.

"How do you know that name?" Those were the first words that came from the phone.

"I thought you didn’t know who that was."

"I asked you a question. Answer me. How do you know that name?" Angel demanded.

The low growl in her voice was unmistakable now, a fierce, protective edge breaking through the cellular line that made him straighten his posture behind the desk.

"An omega girl walked into my store looking like prey for Alphas. She happened to be in heat, and some Alpha tailed her out."

"When was that?"

"About ten minutes ago."

"And you’re just calling me now?"

"I called you multiple times, and you hung up on me..."

He tried to defend himself against her ridiculous logic, his own frustration boiling over as he gripped the plastic casing of the device with a tight, angry hold.

Then the phone hung up again.

It was frustrating to him. He hated it.

He slammed the phone down onto the hard, his chest heaving with an absolute fury at the way she treated people like they were completely beneath her notice.

He felt like banging his head against the table because of that.

He hated Angel Morningstar. He would rather choke than use his phone to call that girl.

But it was because of the poor girl he saw.

April had looked so incredibly small and fragile beneath that heavy oversized cloth, her glasses sliding down her wet nose as she tried to maintain her plain dignity.

She looked weak and fragile, so he had no choice.

The raw vulnerability of her Omega nature had been completely obvious to anyone with eyes, making his own Beta instincts feel a basic sense of obligation to keep her safe.

He already knew she was going to be preyed upon by the worthless Alphas lurking around the district.

He just hoped Angel Morningstar would help the girl if she really knew her.

He stared back out through the glass doors into the dark evening, the flickering pink neon sign casting a long, dim shadow over the empty sidewalk outside.

But if she didn’t find her...

The cold reality of the neighborhood settled heavily into his stomach, the quiet ticking of the store clock marking the passing seconds with a grim weight.

April might become an Alpha’s pleasure tonight.
