Chapter 22: April Gets Rescued
Third POV
"Let go of her."
The moment the voice was heard, the man holding April turned to see a wine-haired woman across the street.
The stranger stood under the dim light glow of a flickering streetlight, her posture relaxed but completely steady as she watched them from the opposite roadside.
She wore sport shorts and an oversized jersey, and she had an orange furry-looking cat strapped to her chest. She also had another backpack and a graffiti skateboard on her back.
Her sneakers matched the same design as her skateboard.
The girl lazily sighed as she crossed the road to meet up with the man and the girl by his side.
She wasn’t even close enough for him to tell that the girl was an Alpha just like him.
"Didn’t you hear what I just said? Let the girl go," the girl said. She looked like someone who was forced to be there.
She stopped three feet away from them, her shoulders slumping slightly as if the entire situation was nothing more than a major inconvenience to her evening.
She put both hands into her pockets.
The man formed a convincing smile as he pulled April closer to his shoulder.
"This is my dear wife. She is not feeling well. It’s nothing of the sort if that’s what you’re thinking," he said.
He forced a warm, gentle tone into his voice, trying to look like a concerned partner helping his sick spouse to the safety of a local cab.
Without any reaction or facial expression, the girl scanned the girl he claimed to be his wife. She bent down a little, double-checking the face. The face cap was covering the girl’s face, but the wine-haired girl bent even lower to get a better look.
She tilted her head to the side, her sharp crimson eyes peering directly under the dark brim of the hat to inspect the sweaty, flushed features underneath.
"What is it you are doing? Quit looking at my wife like that. That is so creepy."
The man shifted his weight, trying to block her view with his broad shoulder as a sudden wave of defensive panic made his pulse quicken.
"Wait, I’m just trying to check if this is the same ghost that lives in my house... Wow, She looks familiar. She has the same facial features as Four Eyes, and those round glasses are definitely similar. Are you sure your wife doesn’t have a doppelgänger?" the girl said, her eyes still scanning the barely conscious girl.
She tapped her foot in a slow, rhythmic pattern against the concrete, her voice dropping into a dry, mocking drawl that made the man’s grin stiffen.
"Haha, people always say that a lot. But I’m sure this is not who you’re talking about. Please excuse us. Like I just mentioned my wife is not feeling well. I need to take her home." He let out a forced, nervous chuckle, his fingers fumbling with April’s arm as he tried to prepare her limp body to take a step forward.
The man took a step, and the girl did too.
She wasn’t letting him leave.
Her shadow stretched out over the two of them under the flickering streetlight, her presence beginning to push outward with a heavy, warning heat.
"When you say the word my wife, it’s really annoying, you know..."
She tilted her chin upward, her crimson eyes narrowing into two sharp slits as the sweet, heavy scent of April’s heat continued to fill the air.
"How is it annoying? I can call her my wife anytime I want."
His voice lost its gentle edge, a sudden growl of his own Alpha nature starting to rumble deep inside his chest as he stood his ground.
"What is your wife’s name?"
"Rebecca. Her name is Rebecca."
He offered the name instantly, his eyes darting toward the empty street behind her as he tried to estimate how much time he had before a patrol car passed.
"Wow, you really are good at this. So I’m guessing this is not your first time doing this act."
She let out another soft, tired sigh, the little orange cat on her chest shifting its weight as if it were getting restless from the delay.
"Look here, young lady. You are an Alpha, and I am an Alpha. Let’s not try to..."
"How old is your wife?"
She cut him off without a single ounce of respect, her voice remaining perfectly steady and cool in the quiet space of the bus shelter.
"What is with these questions? How dare you question my marriage?"
He sneered, his fingers digging even deeper into April’s waist until the barely conscious girl let out a small, pained moan behind her glasses.
"The way you are holding her is upsetting me. Look, middle man, I missed a competition for this girl, so just drop your disgusting act. If you want an Omega in heat, there are Omegas everywhere you can do your shit with. You can find them online, you can go to clubs, I even have contacts of Omegas hitting my phone right now wanting me to suppress their heat. Stop taking advantage of girls like this one. Did she even give you her consent to do what you are planning on doing with her?"
Seeing that the Alpha already knew his intentions, he dropped the act of pretending they were married.
He let out a sharp, cynical breath, his posture shifting from defensive helper to an aggressive, territorial hunter within a fraction of a second.
"Come on, man. It’s just a random Omega. No one is even going to remember this one tomorrow, and when her heat is suppressed, she’s going to thank me for it. If you want, we can both take turns..."
He gestured toward the limp girl between them, a greasy, conspiratorial grin spreading across his face as he tried to offer a compromise.
"First thing first, I am not your man. And second, you’re creepy. Are you that broke that you can’t buy yourself an escort, or do you have some medical problem? Let the girl go, or I’m going to call the cops."
She pulled her left hand out of her pocket, her fingers hovering right above the screen of her phone with a completely cold, indifferent look.
"Let’s not go there. Don’t tell me you don’t want her too. Her pheromones are deliciously intoxicating, and I can’t wait to find us a private corner and have my way. She is a little snack for tonight."
He stepped closer, his jaw tightening as the raw scent of April’s heat seemed to drive his own instincts into a wild, uncontrollable frenzy.
SMACK!
And he didn’t see it coming.
He didn’t even notice when she grabbed her skateboard.
Right across his creepy face.
The force of the blow sent him stumbling sideways across the ground, his grip on April’s waist slipping entirely as his legs buckled.
The impact was so hard that his ears rang, and for a few seconds, he couldn’t hear a single word.
His vision swam in a messy blur of colors, his hands fumbling wildly against his temple as he tried to keep his balance against the metal shelter.
The Alpha girl was holding April now.
She caught the smaller girl’s falling body with an easy, effortless grip around her waist, pulling her flush against her side before she could hit the ground.
"I told you. The way you were holding her was upsetting."
She slid the skateboard back into its harness with a quick, neat movement of her wrist, her breathing barely even elevated from the heavy swing.
"This is how you treat your fellow Alpha? Are you trying to steal her from me? I found her first. She is mine," the man said, his head still hurting as blood ran down the side of it and into his ear.
"You can’t claim an Omega when they’re not in their right mind. If you want, I can wire you some money so you can go to a club or book someone right now. You should be leaving now."
"She is just a mere Omega. What is she to you, huh? You could have just walked away."
"Well... she is my mother’s second wife’s daughter."
"What? You could have just said stepsister. Why the long description?" the man said. He touched his head and saw blood on his hand.
He stared at the red stains on his fingers, his voice trembling with a sudden, bitter frustration at the sheer complexity of her response.
"You have no idea what you’ve done. We better not meet again, because next time I won’t spare you. My brother is a well-known Alpha in this district. He is going to crush you and your entire family. I swear to you, your face will be plastered in every corner of the district..."
"If you’re done, you can skip away and go call big brother to come fight your dirty battles."
And with one hard look, the man left the girls alone at the bus stop.
