Chapter 7: Combat Arena

"Godric Blackstar."

The classroom fell silent.

Every voice died at once. Even the professor looked as though he had heard something impossible.

"Blackstar..." someone whispered.

"I thought they were all dead."

"No, I heard they lost everything."

"So that’s him?"

Murmurs quickly spread through the room.

"R-right," the professor said, clearing his throat. "Why don’t you take a seat and—"

Before he could finish, a ringing sound of the bell cut through the classroom.

Students immediately rose from their desks, already packing their belongings.

"I’ll see you all next week," the professor called after the class as they filed out into the corridor.

Godric lingered behind for a moment, looking down at the card containing his schedule, more specifically, the next entry.

Combat Class.

It was the highlight of everyone’s time at the academy. While the theory was important, to an extent, combat class was where the real progress happened.

Realising he was the last person in the class, other than the professor, who looked at him as though he wasn’t exactly sure what to say, Godric walked out of the class and strode for the combat arena.

Soon enough, he stepped into a vast open space. Reinforced concrete stretched in every direction, while a massive glass ceiling allowed the morning light to pour inside, casting a brilliant golden glow on the students standing below.

"Welcome, everyone," a man in his early thirties with short brown hair said. "I see that we have a couple of new faces, so I will go ahead and introduce myself. I am Professor Richards, and I will be in charge of overseeing your combat class."

As the man finished his sentence, a door leading into the combat arena opened up, and two figures went inside.

"Today’s class will be a little different. I’ve invited two of the academy’s top-ranked students to demonstrate a duel."

Everyone turned to see a pair of students, both wearing pristine white uniforms, a clear indication that they belonged to the Great Houses.

One of them was a young man with short red hair, while the other Godric recognised immediately, her silver-white hair unmistakenly even from the distance.

"This is Raven Stormbourne and Theodore Sinclair."

Of course, there wasn’t a person present who didn’t know who they were.

Every member of the Great House, even the distant cousins, were celebrities, especially so in the awakened community.

And the two students standing before the class of lower-class classmates were not only from the Great Houses but also the direct heirs of the main family trees.

The professor let the students gawk in awe for a moment before turning back to Raven and Theodore. "Please begin whenever you’re ready."

Theodore grinned as he measured Raven with a cunning gaze.

"Ready to lose again, Raven?"

She didn’t reply.

Instead, she simply walked away toward the centre of the arena where most duels took place.

Theodore’s grin faltered as he watched her walk away without a word before quickly walking after her.

The two second-year students took positions opposite one another, several meters between them.

Raven was the first to move.

Her arm rose casually, and a split second later, a reg magical array lit before her, summoning her beast.

Seeing this, Theodore followed suit, summoning one of his own.

In a matter of a second, two magical beasts materialised inside the arena.

Above Raven hovered a sleek avian beast no larger than a wolf. Feathers of crackling violet lightning constantly formed and dissolved across its body, while four radiant wings left glowing trails through the air with every beat. Blue-white arcs snapped between its talons, scorching the concrete below whenever it descended.

Skybreaker.

It’s an Epic-grade beast that, under Raven’s command, had already reached Tier 3.

On the other side, a boar-like beast stood, towering nearly three metres tall, every inch of its body wrapped beneath overlapping plates of black iron. Steam escaped from its nostrils with each breath, and tusks longer than a man’s arm carved deep grooves into the reinforced concrete as it pawed the ground.

Iron Tusk. It was also an Epic-grade beast, with the only difference being that Theodore had already brought it to Tier 4, marking him as the second student to ever do so.

The instant Professor Richards lowered his hand, Iron Tusk vanished.

A deafening boom echoed through the arena as the beast crossed thirty metres in a heartbeat, leaving fractured concrete beneath each of its steps.

It aimed straight for Raven as Skybreaker circled above, too high for Iron Tusk to reach.

Normally, summoers simply watched from a distance as their beasts fought. It was a habit that developed in times of peace, as during the Great War every summoer fought alongside their beasts, especially the five great heroes who were the pioneers of such practise.

Theodore’s beast moved at astonishing speed, comparable more to a motorcycle than a living animal of this size, but before it could reach Raven, who stood completely unmoving, Skybreaker vanished.

A streak of violet lightning tore across the arena, striking Iron Tusk before most students even realised it had moved.

BANG!

The shockwave rattled the entire arena, making most of the students stumble for balance.

It struck Iron Tusk right in the back, dark green spraying from the wound as a painful shriek escaped the beast’s maw.

Skybreaker disappeared once again, before reappearing right above the Iron Tusk, its body rippling with purple lighting, ready to unleash it once again.

But just as Raven was about to give a mental command to attack, the instructor stepped forward.

"That’s enough. Raven wins."

Theodore blinked. "What?"

His jaw tightened to the point it looked as though it might snap.

"Get her!!" he shouted, his eyes burning with red-hot fury as the boar quickly recovered and ran at Raven.

But at that moment, something blurred between Raven and Iron Tusk.

A massive ape clad in dull silver armour caught both tusks.

The charge stopped instantly, concrete cracking beneath its feet from the impact.

Then, with one effortless motion, it hurled the three-ton beast across the arena, sending it crashing into a far-away wall.

"I said that’s enough," the professor said, his tone a lot colder now.

Mountain King. Elite Grade. Tier 6.

Professor’s beasts quickly returned to his side as Theodore watched his injured beast with quiet fury.

He dismissed his beast, letting it return to his Core Space before walking swiftly toward the professor, stopping only a meter away from him.

"You will be hearing from my family," he said.

Then, he simply turned and left.
