Chapter 28: Eighth Corridor

Torr’s ripped arm dropped to the ground with a wet thud as blood sprayed across the corridor.

Godric watched as the vice leader of the human settlement staggered backwards.

The man’s gaze shifted between his ripped arm and Godric, his focus less apparent with each glance as confusion dawned on his features.

Instead of closing the distance to finish it, Godric duplicated his sword, almost like he wanted Torr to see it, and he did.

Torr’s eyes went wide at the sight.

"H-How?" he murmured.

Anger turned into confusion before settling into dread as the vice leader slowly realised what was happening.

Godric didn’t respond.

Instead, he threw the sword forward. It hit Torr right in the abdomen before exploding.

[Blackpearl has reached Tier 2]

Godric noticed the change before every piece of Torr’s body could hit the ground.

Normally, the difference between the first and the second tier, as noticeable as it had been, wasn’t astronomical.

To him, however, the sword lying in his grip felt twice as light. Its edge looked ten times as sharp, and for some reason, despite only using the weapon a handful of times, Godric felt as if his understanding of how to use it had also increased.

He didn’t dwell long on that change.

His gaze drifted toward Torr’s body, or rather its remains scattered across a small fragment of the endless corridor.

Two days inside the dungeon gate and he already had to take a second life.

As much as one might’ve expected him to, he didn’t feel remorse.

Life and death were two sides of the same coin, and if he wanted to stay on the right side, he had to do whatever it took to survive. Not just for himself, but for his family.

He turned away from Torr’s remains and looked at where the exit was moments ago.

This did complicate things, if only a little.

If Loris went back to the settlement and told Daren what happened, his plan would be ruined even with Torr’s death.

But with the exit moving to the sixth corridor, and the apparent location of whatever this place hid being in the eighth, Godric was still far from trying to leave and catch Loris before he could tell others what happened.

The best he could do right now was hope the leader of this whole expedition would, at the very least, wait for the other members of his party after escaping.

Moving along the endless corridor, which now looked a lot different after Loris’s escape, Godric searched for something, anything of interest.

The shape of the eighth corridor was still as twisted as it had been before Loris took the exit. The turns, however, did change, and so Godric found himself back at the start of the corridor a couple of times, having to walk through Torr’s remains a little too much for comfort.

It felt almost as though the place was punishing him for what he did. Or perhaps it was simply his mind telling him that, as needed as the man’s death had been, he should still remember he was a real person.

After what felt like eternity and was probably just over an hour, Godric heard a sudden footstep after taking one of the many turns of the eighth corridor.

He turned slowly, his grip tightening on his weapon.

There, standing behind him, was Torr.

His eyes looked empty, his posture so straight it looked almost mechanical.

And before Godric could react in any way, the man spoke.

"What’s wrong?"

Godric frowned and took a step toward it.

’If it’s standing in the way, then whatever it’s hiding, it must be behind it...’

"I don’t think this is the right way," Hollow Torr said.

"We should turn around."

"What’s wrong?"

"This is not the right way."

"TURN AROUND."

The voice turned more mechanical with each step, losing more and more of the human aspect the closer Godric got.

Then, just as Godric stood inches away from it the figure spoke for the final time.

"LEAVE."

Godric paused beside it for a second, staring it right into its hollow eyes before going around it and walking deeper into the corridor it stood in front of.

From behind, the figure continued to speak, its voice now completely devoid of any human element.

"TURN BACK."

"NO."

...

Godric tuned it all out.

Luckily, whatever this thing was, it didn’t plan to attack him, at least not by using those ’hollows’, which meant that at the very least, he was safe... for now.

The corridor he entered was narrower, and the deeper he went, the paler the navy blocks around him appeared, until they finally settled into a pristine white colour of the sanctuary he had seen from the outside.

’Must be the right way,’ Godric noted, noticing the resemblance.

The white corridor slightly widened at its end, just wide enough to fit a part of double wooden doors with many intricate patterns carved into them.

Godric was about to reach for its handle when Raven’s voice called from beside him.

"I don’t think this is the right way."

’Raven?’

His head whipped around, only to see Torr stand beside him.

"What’s wrong?" it asked in Raven’s voice.

Now, if there was one thing he would truly enjoy killing, it would be whatever this thing was.

Godric shook his head, as though he couldn’t believe he almost got tricked, and reached for the door’s handle.

The second he touched it, the Torr, or rather, this hollow version of him, vanished.

At the same moment, without any need for a push or pull, the doors began to open, to reveal a massive chamber made of prominently white materials.

The walls were just as white as on the outside. The furniture was carved from wood so white and so pristine it almost looked like plastic from a distance. Even the torches hung on the walls and somehow still lit, flickered with white flames, and refused to cast any shadows.

In the centre of the chamber, there was a small altar on top of which something resembling a candle stood.

But unlike everything else around them, its flame wasn’t white, it was purple.
